I am also well on with a small engineers train, mostly completed so far is a water tank wagon and a mobile worshop complete with work bench, just need to source/scratchbuilt a set of tools etc for it!

More specific, the area to be developed around the water well -

Anyway, better spend time with my wife before I go down stairs to find I do not have one any more!!!

I have also been constructing wagons and fitting couplings which are easier on some than others! I have a bogie bolster with long logs which is going to be more complicated to fit couplers to but it is one of th eprogrcts for this evening.

Lovely work Simon. It's nice to see it coming along so well.

"Hoom hoom ba-room a hum a hoom a hoom." I certainly hope no Ents get to see that bogie bolster. So long as the line stays well clear of the Old Forest, those dwarves shouldn't be troubled.   ;)

Do you have plans for some kind of covered van for shipping Old Toby or sacks and barrels of the Shire's fine agricultural products?

Yes please Black sheep, I am sure we can sort something out.

Been offline for a bit, nothing major changed, just been working on the stock trying to get ready for the show in only a few weeks - aaaargh!!!!

Would add piccies but not much new! I will not get anything added this weekend as I have a show in Ross on Wye with my other layout - Polpendra which should be a good weekend.

Best wishes

Simon

The latest offering is a mock up, unlikely to be ready for the first show but never mind -

A Hobbit sleeper train complete with sleeping hobbits

It needs to be a little longer to ensure the door is not overlapping the bed area but I am pleased with the way it looks so far, I just had to include round doors!!

post-3347-0-80368900-1373634700.jpg

I am planning on adding a bench seat at teh door end and a curtain across the end of the bed and possibly curtains over the small windows but keep them open so viewers can see the sleeping hobbits I have and will be adding to the completed coaches. The storage yard the layout has will allow for 3 of these coaches with the loco which I think will be fine.

No work on the layout this weekend as I am exhibiting my other layout, Polpendra, at the Ross on Wye show -

Every so often you find an absolutely inspiring and brilliant layout that you'd previously missed; this is one for me. Brilliant work Simon, I love Lord of the Rings and this just oozes atmosphere.

Brilliant, brilliant and brilliant again, hope I get to see it at an exhibition at some point.

A Hobbit sleeper train complete with sleeping hobbits

And don't forget the Restaurant Car. I mean, what with First Breakfast, Second Breakfast, Elevenses, Luncheon and...

In that vein, I would think the well travelled hobbit would enjoy a sleeper/parlour car. Not just a bed, but comfy chairs, a table for the breakfasts, elevenses etc, and some evident way of keeping the car (and a kettle) warm like a stove. A crooked stove pipe would be an interesting detail. Perhaps even flower boxes under the porthole windows.

With the hobbit turned sideways and bunks there'd be room for a table and stove.

I'm with Oz on this one and would even suggest a whole train of such cars. And make sure that none of them are non-smoking. I forget which years were the best for Longbottom Leaf but such pleasures at table can surely not be denied, whatever the vintage.

(As an aside, Simon, this really is a great and original idea that continues to be well-executed.)

And smoke a little pipe-weed, whatever Professor T intended that to mean.

Comments most appreciated, I think I redesign is in order to make them into parlour sleepers as suggested, glad I posted the card mockup! It is all your input during this project that is making all the more enjoyable!

Best wishes on a way too hot day!!

Excellent. Simon, I am following this thread with great interest - clearly along with many others, it seems. It is this sort of originality that makes this hobby so great. Looking forward to seeing more, especially the pics.

Best wishes,

David

Got another idea for you. From the prologue to Fellowship of the Ring, "On the ordering of the Shire".

The only real official in the Shire at this date was the Mayor of Michel Delving (or of the Shire), who was elected every seven years at the Free Fair on the White Downs at the Lithe, that is at Midsummer. As mayor almost his only duty was to preside at banquets, given on the Shire-holidays, which occurred at frequent intervals. But the offices of Postmaster and First Sheriff were attached to the mayoralty, so that he managed both the Messenger Service and the Watch. These were the only Shire-services, and the Messengers were the most numerous, and much the busier of the two. By no means all Hobbits were lettered, but those who were wrote constantly to all their friends (and a selection of their relations) who lived further off than an afternoon's walk.

Some sort of mail van might be in order.

Cheers

David

Brilliant idea, will add to the list, based on the additional transportation of money etc, maybe with an armed escort?

I have an ideal figure already painted to use as the mayor welcoming in the train etc, will add to my notes for the background and layout information boards I plan to produce for the layout.

Most appreciated

Many whimsical forms are possible.

Dwarf gold should go in a strong box and these (for effect) be visible, rather than a 'bullion van'. These could be in a cage (like a circus cage wagon). You could have an armed dwarf on the roof - or on a veranda platform. One of those little brakeman's cabs seen on European stock could be incorporated in the design.

(Googling "DB Brakeman's cab" images was interesting for the wealth of responses.)

Something like this for instance:

Here's a *very* rough concept sketch:

post-1819-0-73530300-1373931558.jpg

Then of course there are barrel wagons:

il_fullxfull.440285158_cv6z.jpg (I'm thinking a huge barrel of beer or mead for the Green Dragon (and stencilled with a green dragon of course). Or you could do an open wagon laden with wooden beer barrels.

This comes to mind:

Doubtless beer needs to be guarded from hobbit louts in their tweens more than dwarf gold.

Really looking forward to seeing your progress at Barnstaple shortly - *very* shortly - sorry to remind you!  (I'm there as well with Tormouth Quay).

After that, of course, people have another chance to see you in November at our show in the wilds of Thorncombe, assuming that they can find the way!
