SNCF stephen
The Palace and your new structure are superb. I wish I had your knack for speed. I tend to get distracted by too many different things... Just a quick question, what type of glue do you use when making your models? When I used card glue on the first incarnation of my station building, I found that the sides warped a bit and required drying with pressure on them. Do you have any tips in that respect? Also do you recommend any particular types of Felt Pens? I am using Letrosets and find they can run a bit (but it does dry out not too bad). Thanks. Baby Deltic
This layout is looking really good. I like the buildings in particular. The only thing I think doesn't look right is the forced perspective of the backscene.
bmthtrains - David
Hi Stephen, For glue, I tend to use superglue - tiny amounts, but it sticks instantly without the need for much pressure. I have a pack of cheap felt tip pens from WHSmith at the moment - the sort of ones kids use. Cheap and simple seems to work best David
RMweb Gold Revolution Ben Posted November 7, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 7, 2011 Hi David Very nice work, and speedy too. How did you fabricate the pipes on the roof of the newest building? They're very effective! cheers Ben A.
SNCF stephen
Thanks David. That's really useful. I will give that a go when I try version 2 of my building!
bmthtrains - David
Hi Ben, the pipes (thankfully!) are pre-made, from a Greenmax factory building kit I picked up for scratchbuilding purposes. It is filled with handy vents, ladders and pipes. I wouldnt even have attempted them in card! David
bmthtrains - David
I'm getting ready to fix the next set of pavements tomorrow, which means all the completed buildings can be stuck down, and street scenes (signs, traffic lights, cars etc) can be added to the main road. For now, here's a quick vid of how the station area is looking with the city 'growing' around it. bmthtrains - David
And a couple of stills as well - I'm quite pleased with how the 'railway' element of the model is shaping up, all the OHLE gantries, signals etc look good when shot all in a line. shanks522
Really like that last photo David, full of atmosphere even though its not finished. Graham.
bmthtrains - David
Thanks Graham, Today I've made a start on the main street scene. There's lots to do, but here's how I've got on today - adding cars, street lights, the first road signs and traffic lights, and a couple of the tram masts. Just adding people to the scene really brings it to life, and once the buildings on the right hand side are constructed, this should look pretty good. I'm going to slightly re-think the rest of the buildings, as I want to make sure I get some good glimpses of the road behind, so a few slightly smaller brick buildings will replace one of the proposed office blocks. bridgiesimon
This layout is really strting o coe alive, I am very impressed woh your foresight through the planning stage, I look foirard to the opportnuity of seeing this layout in te flesh and a show. Congrats Simon
Removed a/c
It's a stunning piece of work. I am enjoying all the updates that you post.
bmthtrains - David
Latest update, both main street scenes are now complete, so I can move on with filling in the missing buildings. The traffic lights have come out quite well, and I'm pleased with the overall feel of the street furniture - lamps, tram catenary, signs etc. I do need to add a few more 'character' vehicles to create some scenes - I'm thinking maybe a police car or ambulance, a royal mail van, and I need to make up another couple of buses. Anyway, here's how its looking today. David
BobD
That is looking very good. I "almost" am too meek to suggest that I do a very nice Sprinter Ambulance that is quite easy to repaint (or vinyl).
artizen
Are you planning to hide the entry into the station so that the very tight curves are not so obvious? This is coming on well.
RMweb Gold McRuss Posted November 17, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 17, 2011 Hello David, maybe you could place a taxicab in fron of the station entrance, or a bus shelter with a waiting bus. Markus
carlw
Hi, I am loving how this is coming along. But as a driving instructor can i point out the one of your traffic lights is on the wrong side of the Pedestrian crossing. It should be on the side that the traffic enters the crossing not on the far side of the crossing. Carl
bmthtrains - David
Thanks all, Bob, I will be ordering one of those ASAP! Artizen, the whole 'off scene' area will be the last thing to be done - will be painted black and covered so you won't see it at all. Carl - thanks for pointing that out, is it the one behind the Asda Lorry? If so, I need to add another one the other side then, or possibly omit it as no traffic can enter unless the other traffic lights on the junction are green David
carlw
David, Yes its the one behind the lorry. I would say you need one on the island there facing away from the lorry. Also you need one the other side of the box jnc. Carl Edited November 17, 2011 by carlw
Simon Moore
Bloomin heck David It's been a while since i last read about this layout it was very much in the planning stages when i last checked in & what a transformation. Having done quite a few trips into Manchester over the past 6 months on the train this layout very much captures the feel of Manchester. You've certainly got the core elements of Oxford rd there with all the different kinds of buildings mixed in. Certainly inspirational stuff & just shows what can be done with N gauge. bennyboy
As a Mancunian can I say that you have captured the atmosphere of the Picc-Oxford Rd line very well! And as a fellow modeller of urban N Gauge model railways, you have definitely given me something to aspire to.

bmthtrains - David
And here we are, a fully repainted and decal'd ambulance. I'ts not 100% accurate, but works for me! It adds a nice touch to the road scene, I need a few more typically English buses, and perhaps a Police car next. Thanks Bob! Oh, and a quick shot of Tornado happily running through the station now its been repaired by Farish.
