RMweb Gold Brinkly Posted June 11, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 11, 2011 I thought I would upload some photographs of what Horrabridge and the surrounding area looks like today. I will upload some more photographs of what it used to look like in my own layout thread. Old goods shed Looking back towards the down siding Various shots heading down towards Magpie Viaduct, quite a lot of the old track bed has been built up, not sure why. Jason (Younger brother) and Lilly or Collie/Dalmatian cross tries to get a stick This is how big the stick was! Old railway fencing still in place Wouldn't mind that as a view! Looking down towards Magpie Viaduct 1-40 climb, although quite a bit of dumped earth on the track bed. View of the bridge Don't look down! 80 feet to be exact! Back towards Horrabridge Heading towards Tavistock Old sandbox Nice little bridge Nice crack! Looking back towards Horrabridge Regards, Nick
RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted June 11, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 11, 2011 I have not seen this viaduct since 1963!!!!! Is this a public right of way? If I'm ever down in Devon/Cornwall again I would go to seek this out! P @ 36E (Ex 83D)

If I'm ever down in Devon/Cornwall again I would go to seek this out! P @ 36E (Ex 83D) Yeah you can walk down from the old Station down to Walkham viaduct at present. There is a huge amount of heavy plant work at the old Walkham site, not sure what their doing, but I believe the plan is to clear it right back to Tavistock and use it as a cycle path. Quite a lot of money has been spent clearing and repairing the route as 18 odd months ago it was barely passable, with 40 odd years of growth blocking the route. RMweb Premium Kris Posted June 12, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 12, 2011 , but I believe the plan is to clear it right back to Tavistock and use it as a cycle path. It's the final part of the Drakes trail cycle path to be completed. It's due for completion some time in 2012. This will give a traffic free route from Plymouth to Tavistock. RMweb Gold Brinkly Posted June 12, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 12, 2011 Cheers Kris, Shame they built on the old Horrabridge station site, because a nice line could have been reinstated! Regards,
D1041
The grenofen to tavistock section is due to open in Spring 2012, including a new 24m high viaduct over the Walkham and re-opening of Grenofen tunnel. (Reported by BBC Devon on June19).

RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted July 4, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 4, 2011 Shame a railway line couldn't have been put in aswell! When it comes, the railway will come via Bere Alston.... (notice the non-use of the word 'if').....
RMweb Premium Kris Posted July 4, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 4, 2011 When it comes, the railway will come via Bere Alston.... (notice the non-use of the word 'if')..... That sounds very positive.
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted July 4, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 4, 2011 That sounds very positive. All the signs are, so far. It is an encouraging situation, even if still a few years away, there is a prevailing optimism, backed up by solid achievements in the early, preparatory/consultative stages. RMweb Gold Brinkly Posted July 4, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 4, 2011 That is good news. Knowing what Tavy residents are like, and I am sure that line will be used a lot by the locals. There was a lot of resentment (to this day) that both lines were removed in the first place. Regards,
RMweb Premium Siberian Snooper Posted July 5, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 5, 2011 I can't wait for it to reopen then one can have a good run ashore again , mind you it won't take as long as a lot of the pubs have now deceased. Cheers SS
D1072
Will the cycle route connect with the Plym valley route? If so, what's happenning at Yelverton - there is quite a long tunnel under the village.
RMweb Premium Kris Posted July 18, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 18, 2011 The route does join with the Plym valley route, but via a short (300m?) section of quite road that links to the cycle route that follows the A386. This takes you into Yelverton from where you can already continue towards Tavistock on the old line. The work being done is just filling in a missing link section in the later section. 'CHARD
Fantastic to see what can be achieved, and it gives the other more positive side to Sustrans' achievements from what's frequently a somewhat negative rail perspective. What a shame more lines couldn't have been treated in this way before they were lost irretrievably to development creep and casual abuse. Looking forward to enjoying this resource (and the linked refreshment stops !) in the non-too distant future.
