Non-railway modelling

Recommended Posts

Been going through some pics. Went on a trip to Germany last year and visited Kiel. There's an excellently run martime museum by the harbour in a building that was an old fish market. Very good at explaining the local history and included some superb models.

This is a 1:100 scale model of the Color Line ferry Color Magic one of several ferries that link Kiel with Oslo. They are built with  cruise ship facilities to attract passengers to the route.

The actual ship is 224m (734') long which makes the model  big at 2.24 m or 7.34' long.

The starboard side is cut away in places to reveal certain decks. The amount and quality of detail is frankly staggering.

P1160393ed.JPG.982b326b99535bca437f1f9095d01aa5.JPG

The full sized ship has a mock "shopping street" to encourage passengers to spend money.

There were also buttons to press to light up different parts of the interior.  The information given was that the main parts of the hull were CNC  machined and the fittings and details were by 3D printer. Made by a large team of people, apparently.  (I think it said the figures are Preiser!)

Anyway, it was over 7 foot of remarkable detail and I thought I should share it with you.

Found another photo of the Color Line model.

This shows a conference room where a model of the model is being discussed!

Just as a matter of interest, this is an actual Color Line ferry.  The maritime museum is in the red brick building with a high roof on the right, in front of the dock offices. It was very well curated, very friendly and had an excellent cafe as well. Some small preserved vessels outside it.

Excellent - a model of the model, within the model: Modelception! 👏

In the dark and distant past, I must have built at least a couple Airfix Phantoms and fancied crack at an up to date one. Asked about on a 1:72 scale forum and was recommended trying this one from Fine Molds of Japan. Compared to what I remember of the Airfix kit, not a bad offering of it's time, the level of detail is astounding. It comes without armaments, these available as an add on kit. Other add ons for cockpit detail, belts, etc are available from Fine Molds, but I have purchased an etched set from Eduard. Down side of the kit is that it is almost £40 over here, but only £16-£17 in Japan, but postage would bring it up to UK prices. The armament pack was another £20. The cockpit detailing pack would be another £22 from this maker, but the Eduard set was only £10 and available in the UK from several sellers.

The limited edition is that it comes with two crew figures.

Just bought some of these, chrome and matt aluminium. It seems to be quite popular in the US, so thought I might give it a try.

Now I need to buy a suitable kit to use it on. Another P-51 methinks.

I am presently collecting, checking and disposing of my 1990s model collection. i went a bit nuts and tried to build a world in which everything worked

Link to Youtube video: Working model lorry based on slot car chassis

Also got working London trolleybus (used Eheim/Brawa catenary) and various double decker buses built on the same basis, scaled between 1:76 and 1:72 depending on parts.  These scudded along one edge of my layout back in the day

Ah... the dream.

Aim for the stars and you might hit a chimney-pot, as one of my school teachers used to say... 🙂

That stuff is great. I've used it several times and found it easy to apply and get a really good finish.

Tamiya P-47D Razorback, 1:72.

This is the first Tamiya kit in a very long time and it's good to see them at the top of the game still. Everything was a perfect fit and didn't need to get the filler out. The location and fitting of the undercarriage door was so much better than the two Academy P-47s I had previously done. My only gripe was it not having a cockpit canopy that could be posed open to be easily see the wealth of detail in the cockpit. And, maybe the decal could be a little thinner, as the panel lines are very fine and getting them into them, even with Micro set and sol, wasn't hat easy.

Overall a very satisfying kit to build.

Just ordered a bubbletop from Tamiya.

I recall (dimly) a product in the late ‘60s called Metalskin, which came in gloss or matt.  I made a reasonable Airfix Hawker Hart and applied it to that, which for the time looked quite good. I then tried it on a Lightning but it took so long I gave up.

Airfix Mitsubishi A6M2b Zero. Nice kit, goes together well, just needed a little filler on the underside of the fuselage. Decided against painting the cockpit freehand, so waiting for masks to arrive from Poland. Will fit the prop last of all. Deliberately light when spraying, to get the look of a well worn plane, think I got it about right. I did a few panels in a slightly different shade of green, although, according to Tamiya, it's the same, just spray and pot, to look like replacement for battle damage.

Any niggles? Yes, a couple. It would have been nice to have a three part canopy, so it could be modelled open. In the painting/decal guide, it shows four locations for decal #12, yet only two are supplied.

The engine cowl is painted Tamiya Sea Blue (XF-17) which is supposed to match their AS-8. We'll see when I build the F4U-1D Corsair.

Japanese 1/32 scale bus kit - finally got round to building it after the thing had sat, unmade, in a cupboard for over 13 years!

DSCF0229.JPG.e9ddc0c0c583e67a8fd8c57b45adee8e.JPG

Instructions totally in Japanese, but seems to represent an Osaka city bus, one of quite a range of that scale bus kits that Aoshima produce.

It did look like the first pic , scratchbuilt Strabokran, the rest 3d printed by me apart from some heavily butchered kit figures.

Now it looks like the second pic, I dropped it…

Good morning folks,

My latest sample of non-railway modelling, although it is railway related but not modelling.

My son bought me the Waterloo Station jigsaw puzzle for Xmas, so I felt duty bound to start it :)

Started the first week in January and completed last Sunday, so 2 months overall to completion. However, it was not a full-time occupation, since there are other things in life, such as railway modelling and continuing my Battle of Britain Memorial Squadron of Spitfires ;)

Enjoyed it mostly, although the (upper) WW2 view with the dark roof areas was a bit of a PITA!

Cheers, Nigel.

It took me about two weeks in January, a bit at a time; agree about the black areas, I think that's what I finished with!  I think we actually have two of this puzzle - accidentally bought a second at a charity shop - so one will go to a friend.  It is a lovely pair of images with lots of little indicators of the beginning and end of the war.

Hello Northmoor,

Agreed, I finished with the WW2 roof area last, which I actually did in a blitz ( ho ho) last Sunday as it had been sat there nagging 🙄

Two atmospheric views, hope your friend who gets your charity shop copy enjoys it.

Last one the boss got me from the local charity shop has various pieces missing 😔

Cheers, Nigel.

Working 4mm scale London Trolleybus, built by me circa 1996

Body adapted from Tower Models RT kit, motor and gearbox from Tyco slot car, front axle from Corgi car, spring power pickups actually wired to the motor.  This was set up to go in a straight line down a bit of road on my layout guided by 2 ridges in the road surface, actually takes power from the overhead wires

Michelin Citroen PLR “Mille Pattes”

My Dad worked for Michelin and did a training “stage” at their French HQ in Claremont Ferrand in the late 1970s.  We visited him during that time and I saw the Michelin Test track where this car operated / although not the car itself.

Very Gerry Anderson.

Cheers
