Scottish Region photos 1980's

Recommended Posts

Thanks Bruce smile.gif and thanks for the info about the Quail Maps.

I remember the sidings have a few things in a few times i was there but i was never lucky enough to see any movements in or out of them myself. I have seen photos of trains coming out of them though.

I also remember the 1st couple of times i visited the signalbox was working but after that it had closed and had become a waiting room. my everlasting memory of the place was my first visit though, we got off the train in pouring rain (well it is Scotland wink.gif ), walked down the steps to the underpass leading to the road and looked up and down the road... saw the phonebox and nothing else... i got very close to that phone box that day!!! but i love the place and once made a model of it in N gauge but i'd love to do a more detailed version (and more accurate) in OO, i've got the engines and some of the stock... just need to build the actual layout now! i've put my Rotherwood project on hold for now. I think in September i may stop off at Ardlui to get a few more photos just for reference.

My photos of the station were just these three...

Brings back the memories John!! I'm sure I've got an old 8mm video of two 37's crossing - one on freight and one on passenger just like your pic.

One (or rather 4) for the class 47 detectives-

In all of the following I missed the loco number (not an uncommon occurence  )

6D22 17.55 Thornton to Mossend ABS near Dalmeny in May 1986

A class 47 passes Seafield pit with a Dundee to Edinburgh service. One of the paps of Fife in the background (well if WJVA can get away with it....) 10th May 1986 http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/mmartin/fifepits/starter/east/pits/s/pit-6.htm gives more info on the pit

Hi Bruce,

The last photo looks like a speedlink working, possibly heading back south, as the flats have no pipe on them.

Looks like it stopped in Montrose, with the 'Thompsons Mag Lime' tipplers.

Loco looks to be one of the Gateshead 474XX as it would appear to have the crest above the number on the bodyside.

These shots are really interesting to me Bruce. 6D22 seems to be what became of 6K73 a Millerhill service which I have in the 1981 WT and 6D36 in the 1984 Speedlink WT. The mix of wagons is useful as this is exactly what I am trying to achieve with Balbeggie Sidings.

Any other shots taken of Fife or services running through Fife would be very much appreciated.

Great photos Bruce & Peter.

I can't help on the 47's, they never were my top subject even though i now look back at them and wonder why not?

Does anyone have any photos of any of the observation coaches used during the 80's on the Glasgow to Oban or Fort William lines? i have the photo i took above at Ardlui but better photos of that one and any others would be welcome. I know there was a Class 101 Metro Cammel DMU that was converted but as far as i know that only ran on the Inverness to Kyle line

John,

Some more....

Firstly, the afternoon Aberdeen to Immingham SLK. From my observation/memory this consisted of the following traffic flows:

Lime/timber (OTA)/empty petroleum/??? (VDA)/household coal empties (HEA) - usually marshalled in that order.

The consist for the following shot taken at Wormit in May 1986 was:

47239 + 26042 + 4 x bogie lime + 5 x 4w open (POA?)+ 19 x HEA (red + baux) + 4 x TEA (1x grey 3 black) + 9 x HEA - 41 vehicles in all. (I've got it on video :D )

post-3695-127706966295_thumb.jpg

47/3's were pretty common too (for a while anyway) - here 47 375 passes Cupar - note cartics which werent so common

post-3695-127707020124_thumb.jpg

Finally a shot of 47 098 at Leuchars

post-3695-127707025687_thumb.jpg

The cements

40159 approaches the site of Lochmuir box in July 1980 (19 x PCA)

post-3695-127707040705_thumb.jpg

Elgin/Burghead working (16 x grain + 12ish x MCV)

post-3695-127707060272_thumb.jpg

Local stuff

20225 approaches Thornton with the Auchmuty return empties trip

post-3695-127707050223_thumb.jpg

and 27026 on the Westfield branch with a rake of 21 tonners bound for Leven PS

post-3695-12770708918_thumb.jpg

Unfortunately, I'm too tender of years to have recorded the triple 20's on the Seafield HAA's, the Aberdeen pipes or the Kirkcaldy harbour branch :(

Wonderfull photos, particularly like the one of Leuchars. Have you any of trains going to the RAF base and the shunters there?

Thanks. I'm afraid this is as close as I dared!!!! Don't remember seeing a shunter in fact, but like you would be interested in seeing any pics.

One of them named River Eden I think is now at the KFRPS's yard in Methill. I used to live down the road from leuchars, not when all these nice loco hauled trains were the norm though, got many photo's of the area in more recent years that will be posted when I get a scanner.

Cheers Peter.

  • 4 weeks later...

Some more bits and bobs....

Firstly, a couple of shots at the now closed Errol station mid-way between Dundee and Perth. By the mid 80's the train service consisted of the occassional Perth-Dundee/Arbroath service - when it could be so inclined to stop.

post-3695-127931651131_thumb.jpg

The low platforms were a legacy of the pre-CR heritage.

post-3695-127931653081_thumb.jpg

47424 approaches with the 11.25 Glasgow QS to Aberdeen express. Both shots from August 1982.

Immediately north of Markinch, served by a facing point off the ECML was a couple of sidings serving the Markinch & District Cooperative Society. Here domestic coal was unloaded in a rather ramshackle shed - a marked contrast to the grand facade on the High Street.

post-3695-127931630164_thumb.jpg

A nice modellers cameo - 06003 runs back to the station with a single MCV in August 1980.

27010 passes Craiglockhart Junction on the Edinburgh Sub with a very steam era mixed freight. April 1982

In strong January light, a 107 leaves Glasgow Central bound for Edinburgh. 1981

Guest eddie reffin

There a number of pics on fotopic.net showing the observation saloon that ran to Oban in the mid 80s. From memory it was always the maroon one and if you stick 45030 in the search facility it should give up some photos of it.

With my 4 BR passes a year it was amazing the routes you could get out of a Falmer to Thurso ticket!

08430 shunts a parcels rake at the east end. Note the clean ex SR PMV sandwiched between the more usual livery variants. Note that the roof is blue (the clean one obviously)

post-3695-127948805049_thumb.jpg

A quick dicht with a sponge over the first two windows then a blether. The 11.03 to Cowdenbeath can wait. April 1984

Hi Guys,

More great pics, cool.gif I do like the 26s and 27s. The pic with the Southern vans is interesting, I think there is another thread talking about how the Southern vans travelled far and wide.

The last pic is superb, I think Dave (Waverley West) will like this one.biggrin.gif

Too right I do, Peter!

Bruce, thanks a million for posting those. I'd love to see any more you may have of Waverley.

It's good to see this thread still well and truly alive and kicking. Please keep them coming guys!

Cheers,

Dave

Dave........ you can tell the photo of the 26 on Post is a fake......!

Here on RMweb we all know the sun comes from directly behind the station and provides nice back lighting - like you always capture.........!

Your Waverley is starting to look better than the real thing - to me.

Ahhh, but Dave is obviously up at the crack of dawn to catch the sun in the east!!! At the time of the pics I was but a student and 'am' was a thing that happened at the end of the day :)

Dave, I've few more - let me know if there are any particular angles/services you are interested in.

That's right Bruce, up at the crack of dawn me to get those early morning shots.

I'd be interested in anything and everything you have of Waverley/Princes St Gardens from the 80s. Any shots you have looking at The Mound Tunnels from the platforms would be particularly useful though I guess. Also, anything that shows the gubbins (relay boxes and other cabinets, ScotRail sign, etc., etc.) along the wall on the north side of the tracks would be useful too.

Thanks again!

Cheers,

Dave
