I will add Scottish ones to this thread (and will eventually post some that were not taken in Eastfieled! )- although I did spend a lot of time sneaking around there.

 

I will also start a Gallery thread to post my UK photos + these now that I have got the hang of the scanner thingy for these prints

 

 

40 173 was (from memory) parked here with a "do not move" spangle for months - maybe years? Nice RED Ballast

 

 

This was my second to last 20 (never did find 20 009) and arrived on shed presumably on it's way to Glasgow Works for overhaul. Nice surprise to find this on my home depot.

 

 

No comment - no excuse needed to photograph a nice clean brush.

Not up to "the best quality" as these are now almost 30 year prints taken with a Bomb proof Praktica Camera that I must have dropped dozens of times.

Loaded this one to the 37's noses thread.

From memory this is one of the first times I saw the modified nose with the cut back cowl, oval buffers + blanked off headcodes. yuk - glad I had no idea what was to come for the 37's in later years.

Interesting appearance of a class 126 DMU in the background there, I thought that the last few were confined to the Ayrshire services by 1981, wonder why that one strayed as far as Edinburgh.

A member of the station staff enjoys a break in the sun. Class 101 with service from Fife arrives. Somebodies nicked the train shed revealing the dreadful state of the paintwork behind. April 1982

 

 

47 708 propels the 15.00 Edinburgh to Glasgow QS out of Haymarket. Feb 1981

 

 

26001 shunts CO2 tanks in the Caledonian Distillery sidings. Note the BR built LMS design goods brake. The distillery closed in 1988. Feb 1981

 

Re my previous post - can't help with any explanantion for the 126 unit, Jim - although I took a few pics on that particular day none were of this unit and my scrawled notes don't help.

I have been searching for THAT photo for ages. Thank you. The footbridge at Haymarket prior to its replacement/refurbishment. I had - mistakenly - thought that it was refurb'ed in the 1970's going by the style of the replacement - evidently it was later.

 

I also had not realised that it ended in the rather decrepit timber structure on the side of the station building.

I was just getting ready to point out the difference between the 120s and 126s when I noticed that you were absolutely and completely correct - well spotted sir!

 

The 126 units were largely confined to Ayr/Girvan/Stranraer runs but perversely, in their final months they strayed quite regularly from their traditional haunts. We believe that this is probably because they were no longer supposed to be in existence.... The edict had been sent out that they were to be withdrawn as non standard but thanks to the good work of various Ayr and Corkerhill fitters a few remained in service long past their expiry date (including of course our preserved example, 126 413). The survivors then tended to cover for random "Blue Square" workings. This set has probably worked through from Glasgow Central via Shotts.

 

An excellent shot of a 126 in Princes Street Gardens which might well be this very working was sent to us a few years ago - "Sc59401" may be able to provide further info.

Interesting to see the yard as it should be - full of 16 tonners - the last time I went there for a "proper" photographic excursion, it was full of Class 107s waiting for axle checks.

I do indeed have the photograph but it dates from 18 September 1981. The unit number on the leading vehicle is believed to be 126 413 which would make it SC51043, the DMBS now preserved at Bo'ness. Class 126 unit formations were very variable so there is no way of identifying the other two cars in the photograph. Unfortunately I can't post it here for copyright reasons.

 

Great photos Bruce. The unit passing Falkland Yard shows the typical list to the compartment side of the trailer car and as usual there is no unit number on the DMS. These were usually left off because of the highly variable formations and the unit numbers went with the DMBSs only. From the headcode 2B28 the Bo'ness picture dates from 28 September 2008, Day 2 of the Diesel Gala.

Apologies from moving away from the relative exotica of the Swindon 126 but the archetypal ScR train of the 1980's has to be the 101 3 car unit - capable of breaking down virtually anywhere in the region. Just to be difficult, 3 pics separated but by yards....

One of my earliest photos showing the old barriers and signs at Queen Street probably 1979.

 

 

A view no longer possible due to the new Buchanan Galleries (shopping Centre and huge car park). Oh how I hated 47 272 and its HA pals. Time after time they looked great (check the dirt on this one) then you got the number. 208 + 272 + 273 + 268 + 269 saw them almost every day for years. Would like to see them again though.

 

 

Another view slightly later - also no longer possible and this shows the Road over bridge for Parliamentary Road - still there but squeezed between Concert Hall, Buchanan Galleries and Bus station. The glass bridge walkway inside Galleries is in roughly the same location. Check out how many Snorkel jackets and flares at platform end!

That's a great picture. I hadn't realised that Haymarket had ever been quite so shabby looking. Wonderful piece of industrial grot.

 

Of course, now they are just taking the wrappings off the building after repairing and cleaning the stonework and so on.

A weekend on the Kyle line - part 1

 

A typical summer Saturday service - 3 trains each way + any excursions

 

The first pair of trains

Thank you for posting that one, Craig. They didn't stay like that for long! The lack of a "GG" logo suggests that this vehicle (SC51034 from the unit number) was probably among the last to be overhauled. The picture is interesting also because the Class 126 car is coupled directly to the Class 122 (presumably also returning from overhaul but by which route?) without a barrier vehicle, which would have been used in the past due to the lightweight buffing gear of the drophead buckeye-fitted Class 126s.
