Heljan O gauge western

Me three!

Don't think the north west will be closed in my absence, though!

I shall certainly be interested in seeing just how good a job Heljan have done with one of my all time favourite diesels - they certainly do seem to keep getting better and better!

Cheers,

John E.

Interesting images. There seem to be a number of issues with this one in my opinion, the most obvious being the height of the valences, in particular they should all be at the same height above rail level. The footholes in the front valence sides don't come high enough, the foot hole under the cab doors should be offset towards the front of the loco not in the centre. The lock for the cab door should be above the handle and not in the crack, the horn shold be inclined slightly down at the front and it seems the roof profile at the front whilst better than the 4mm version is still a long way from the correct shape. They also have a mould line running all the way along the front of the roof beyond the roof panels. The rubber block in the middle of the bogie is an odd shape and the brakes look very skinny.

Sorry if I offend anyone's sensitivities with these comments, but having crawled all over 1010 taking measurments a few years ago, they are a bit too glaring to let pass without some observations.

Regards

Mark Humphrys

I'm no expert on Westerns (a fraction before my time actually) but the glazing (virtually flush) looks much better than that on the forthcoming Class 31 already! (which was a backward step after the good job they did on their recent Class 33 glazing).

From some angles it looks very, very nice but the centre valance depth (or lack of) as Mark points out does leap out to my eyes, as does that 'joint' above the buffer beam. Interesting that they've tooled it up without headboard clips too....

Thanks for the great photos Brian.

Looking at the ones of the instrument panel and cab rear bulkhead it looks like there are SMC LED's for cab lights and instrumentaion lighting. Yes?

It does look nice though.

Still stuck in the south of France on holiday and will miss Telford. Do please post any news on the Western, 31 and new releases if you can. Thanks

In answer to the last question, yes the Western does have LED's in the rear bulkhead for the cab lights as per the prototype. If these bother you when running just pull the wires out of the PCB.

Today I gave it a run on the old Holiday Haunts layout, a Western on the sea front again!

Good job it wasn't yesterday or I would have been most upset about missing it (having completely overlooked what teh date was until it was a bit too late  ). BTW that PerWay bloke seems to have noticed the wonky buffer ;)

Always great to see a 1000 on the sea wall. There can be no better association than Westerns and Devon Sea walls. Now do I upgrade to O gauge or stick with the OO and Dapol's soon to be released model?

  • 3 weeks later...

The last week I have been painting the Heljan 7mm Western pre-production model to see what it's like with a bit of yellow on it! I have added a set of Shawplan nameplates on it as well. Just waiting to see when they send over a second model with all the mods on it.

Guest oldlugger

Very nice indeed Brian. I wouldn't say no to one of these, just to look at as I don't have an O gauge layout! Is there any indication of when they will be on sale, how much and who will sell them?

Cheers

Simon
