RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted October 8, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 8, 2011 An excellent show, and daughter and I only went along as a sort of last minute job after it was decided a trip to Risborough wasn't quite for her and her brother (and he didn't go to Aldershot with us anyway). Any enough of that - it was my first visit to this show and it definitely won't be the last; apart from one apparently brain dead driver in the car park - it was a great show and very friendly with some excellent layouts and we ended up dealing with a couple of shunting switching challenges in Cascade Yard so I'm sorry that we were weren't out by closing time (well i'm not really sorry but it's nice to be polite ). Definitely on the list for the future even if that nice Mr Trerise 'up from Cornwall' persuaded me that I couldn't afford to be without a Well Tank (must have been the one which was transferred to Aberdare by mistake in 195Xish or thereabouts ). Oh and I, and several other persons it seemed, got to test run it at the show as certain photos testify.
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted October 8, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 8, 2011 Do please say hello to certain SWAG members on 'Quai 87'...! Or go just that bit further and give them something to drool over And if you couldn't work out where that was taken here's bigger clue Thanks Brian for the loan of the most scenic test track I have yet to come across (and we decided - fortunately - not to try it in the lift)
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted October 9, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 9, 2011 The Well Tank attracted quite some interest... Sorry that some of the images aren't quite sharp - taken on camera phone this time: Meanwhile the owner of the layout stood back and watched it all from the comfort of his own portable backscene....!! Andy Y
from the comfort of his own portable backscene....!! Priceless; the man's a genius! I never realised the solution to unsightly paunches* behind layouts had been overcome. *Not that I'm suggesting Mr H. is so endowed.
RMweb Gold pirouets Posted October 9, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 9, 2011 Had a very enjoyable visit today, and yes, that apron was there again. There was always a good crowd round Quai87. Whether it was the layout or the apron is still being debated in clubs around the country. This was the best show these guys have put on since I started going a number of years ago with everything grouped very nicely and the standard of the layout across the board being high. A few photos attached below. Alkham Crumley and Little Wickhall Brixcombe Totnes - I have been debating giving up modelling now I have seen this. gordon s
Thanks so much for the pictures. Made me feel even more gutted that I forgot the show was on last wekend....and it's just a few miles down the road. Looks like it was another cracker. ColinW
A very good show, went on Saturday. Interesting to note that there was hardly any modern image layouts in the show , but that is not a criticism. Agree that the Beattie well tanks looked great in the display cabinet on the Lernow models stand ( I'd prefer mine with Southern on it.) RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted October 10, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 10, 2011 We returned home with Quai 87 last night tired but having had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. Quai 87 was placed amongst the 2mm Scale Association section of the show, (their AGM was held on the Saturday) they being a very pleasant and agreeable lot and we had Charlie Petty on our right who kept us on our toes for the weekend! It was nice to see Graham Muz of this parish and a few other RMwebbers visit us. This was the first time that the new wagon hoist, the elevated track and the miniature Rivarossi 'Baeur' shunter was shown and there was much interest from people. As has been commented that there was no modern image layouts on show. The show manager said that the club couldn't get any for that weekend which was a cause of some regret to them. The exhibits were of a high quality nonetheless. Here are a few snaps. Firstly that apron! CK was very unhappy when told by our 'Dear Leader' that it had to worn when he was at the helm during movements! I simply threw my toys out of the pram and refused point blank! 'CK' and 'The Stationmaster' discuss the finer points of Kernow's delightful little well tank. I have to say that it was touch and go as to whether I weakened.....need....want....need...! Placed on the elevated section (the only bit that didn't have any P87 pointwork) it moved beautifully 'slug like' straight from the box. A remarkable little engine. John Burkett-Smith's 'Totnes' in 2mm assisted by Jerry Clifford ('Queensquare') and the lovely Kim. For those who haven't seen it, it's a superb model railway set in the countryside, with the essence of Totnes well captured. This building on the upside is virtually unchanged today. Unfortunately the downside buildings were destroyed by fire in the '60s and the footbridge was smashed by an errant track crane in the 70s.
RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted October 10, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 10, 2011 Some more snaps. The excellent Wansbeck Road is a layout built to a consistent standard, with quality trackwork, stock and most importantly IMHO the scenics.
RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted October 10, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 10, 2011 'Wansbeck Road' Another Totnes snap. Next John Greenwood's 'Wenfordbridge Goods Depot' with working road vehicles and crane. 'Framsden' in 2mm More later when I've done some work! RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted October 10, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 10, 2011 Thanks for uploading the pictures, particularly of CK Totnes - That is one layout I really would like to see "in the flesh", I spent ages looking at its smaller stable mate Ashburton the other year at Manchester, so Totnes might keep me captive the whole show! It will Mickey!
ColinW
I was going to class Koln USW as a modern image (European), it didn't feature trains that had something smoking or hissing in front of them. Thoroughly enjoyed watching QUAI:87 as did quite a few people as every time I went past, their was a crowd around it. Also liked Totnes, and think that Brixcombe, the P4 layout that the Farnham club are building will be one to view when finished. Special mention for Wenfordbridge Goods Depot in the 2mm finescale section for the working overhead lifting gantry and moving tractor and was also using a Beattie well tank. tmhotten
I have attended this show for many years and this was the best that I can remember with a wide range of excellent layouts in many scales and gauges as can be seen from the pictures posted on this forum . One show where I spent more time enjoying the modelling rather than spending money! Congratulations to the organisers. Terry Hotten
pointstaken
Despite every intention of going, I regret that more important (health) issues supervened. Obviously I missed some really classy modelling, looking at the photos on here. Modelling dying off ? Not likely, looking at the efforts on this thread. Brian Harrap
Priceless; the man's a genius! I never realised the solution to unsightly paunches* behind layouts had been overcome. *Not that I'm suggesting Mr H. is so endowed. *oh yes he is (unsightly paunched), and getting more so, hence the disguise...............some wag even asked me what my scale of charges were for standing in for a bit where there some gaps in his backscene. Thoroughly enjoyed the show.........many excellent layouts, Brian.
jbe
Thanks to everybody who came along for the exhibition and for the kind words above. Particular thanks to those who brought along an excellent collection of layouts many of which have been illustrated already. We enjoyed ourselves and it is heartening to read that others (exhibitors and visitors) did too. Here are a few photos of a couple of layouts that didn't feature so far: Harlyn Road: Cheddar Julian
