Search for Photos of Par station, Cornwall in the 80's

Recommended Posts

I have found quite a few photos of class 50's but not many of the HST's.

Best regards,

Jeremy

I'm not clear why HST's need to be in the pictures, unless you want photographic evidence of HST running numbers?

Have you seen the large size photos of Par(taken 1986-89) on this site http://freepages.nos...eritage/par.htm ? It's also good for Lostwithiel, Newquay and other areas of Cornwall in the mid/later1980's and good for confirming locos/liveries at that time - largely HST free though.

I was on a Cornish rover in 1985 and there seemed to be more (proper) services operated with loco and coaches. In 1988 on an all line rover got a train from PZ to Plymouth with a pair of 50's - one was removed at Plym just as the traction bashers there decided to get on!

You will have ample options for using

08 BZ had a few

37's on clays look for BZ examples

45, 46 on XC services, very late 80's replaced by HST's

47, 50 on many main trains

I don't seem to recall many HST's when I was in the area in the 80's but I could be wrong.....

I was doing some cataloguing yesterday and realise I have a HST shot taken from the bridge looking up line.

Also I may have one or two HSTs taken at St Austell or Bodmin Road dating from 1980-85.

I have some gardening to do (before it rains), will try to scan some in later,

cheers

Theres loads of pictures to be found in the Middleton Press books on the Newquay Branch and most of the John Vaughan books - especially ,The Newquay Branch, and its ,Branches and Branches' and Byways of Cornwall.

Also try this website www.flickr.com/photos/irishswissernie/sets/72157626990059642/

Its from a set marked Western region photos and is a fuil album of Par. It says Par in the 90s but aside from the trains running I think the place was pretty much the same. Some great shots of the buildings from all angles.

I've often fantasised about such a similar layout myself....

There were quite a few HST turns during the 80's. I think we tend to air-brush them from memory as there were so many loco hauled trains around.

Too true.

With only 36 (or 24) exposures on a film I rationed my shots, only 'using' a HST or DMU if I wanted a shot of,

say, a signal gantry, and needed a train to provide extra interest and nothing more interesting was expected.

I have had a look at a WTT for Oct 1982 - May 1983, these are the following UP HSTs at Par Mon-Fri.

06.28 Pz-Padd

08.27 Pz-Padd

09.35 Pz-Padd

10.20 Pz-Newc

15.00 Pz-Padd

16.25 Pz-Padd

Here we go with HSTs then.

I have found more than I expected, 1 from 80, 3 from 82, 1 from 83.

this means it was probably 1E95 10.20 Penzance - Newcastle, 7/11/83.

I have quite a few more, but not HSTs, various views/angles but mostly DMUs, 37s, 47s, & 50s.

If you were after anything specific I can have another look.

A short train suitable for a limited space layout.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your photos! It is nice to see some of the running numbers which will enable me to produce some authentic HST's which actually ran on the line. Also good to see how these weathered in their first years of service on the Western region.

If you have any more pictures please post them as i need as many as possible, not just for re creating the trains on this line but also all the buildings. I visited Par last summer and took a large quantity of pictures of the structures albeit painted in different colours. Also the station lamps have been replaced.

Many thanks again for all your help.

Best regards,

Jeremy

Do i post the layout details here or in a different section of the website. I'm new to all this and appreciate all your help.

BcnPete, love your Coombe junction layout and have been following the blog! I've just lowered my first Farish 37!!!!

Jeremy, hi

Why not set up a blog/topic for your layout and we keep this thread for prototypical photos etc...

Thanks for your interest in my layout...just remember to check your clearances on the 37 bogies as otherwise it will only like straight runs of track!

Pete

Hi the train in question was typical of the time. Whatever cars were servicable were chucked out as a "set". We had NSE and chocolate & cream in a pair, the 108's were patched together with Metro-Cammel cars (as seen in my picture) and the bubble cars and class 117s could be matched to anything.

Perhaps we could start a thread about DMU formations and keep this clear for Par! :)

Hi Jeremy

looking back through my pictures, there are none specifically of buildings but here are a variety of train workings.

First from 1980.

post-7081-0-86219200-1321134796_thumb.jpg

Set P126 (55026) has strengthened the 10.10 service from Newquay, it will now be detached at Par, 16/7/80.

post-7081-0-35850000-1321134671_thumb.jpg

Set C593 arrives at Par on the 12.35 from Newquay, Set P126 is stabled in the distance. 16/7/80.

Now moving forward to 1982.

50009 heading 3S15 12.10 Penzance to Glasgow, 21/4/82.

post-7081-0-39393900-1321135288_thumb.jpg

37299 on a down freight working, 21/4/82.

Now to 1983

post-7081-0-62168000-1321135418_thumb.jpg

50044 heading 07.50 Bristol - Penzance, I think this was usually about a 4 coach set with additional vans, 7/11/83.

post-7081-0-36750500-1321135556_thumb.jpg

47515 on a down service, 7/11/83.

post-7081-0-15898400-1321135685_thumb.jpg

50047 on an up passenger service, probably a Penzance - Plymouth local working,

47258 is in the loop platform, 7/11/83.

Happy days

cheers

Some lovely pictures on this thread - such variety and a very model-worthy station to boot.

From my one and only visit in July 1984- mid 14 day National RailRover, emerging dishevelled and bleary eyed.

Great photos and memories, thanks for posting those gents.... incredible to think that all this was nearly three decades ago. I spent a lot of time in the South West in 1982 / 83, quite a 'classic' period in many ways with plenty of loco hauled goodies to enjoy in good old banger blue livery. I recall seeing the six refurbished / plain blue 50s all knocking about in Cornwall for much of the period before they went into large logo livery. Back then, especially during the night, it still felt like the 'old railway' with certain trains being split or shunted about with longish layovers at various stations. The only thing missings were the milk tanks which finished a couple of years before.... happy days indeed :)
