RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted November 27, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 27, 2011 Last Sunday 20/11/11 I visited the Aberglaslyn pass in the company of John Farmer ('Re6/6') and Neil Rushby ('Neil'). We were on our way to visit His Grace the Duke of Parkside at Llanberis and were running late, having spent a little too much time rooting around in the undergrowth in the old trans-shipment siding at Trawsfynnedd. However, we just had to stop to watch a train double-headed by the Jung Mallett and a Double Fairlie working a Porthmadog to Beddgellert train through the Aberglaslyn Pass: (Sorry, not clever enough to embed properly in this post!...) Once we met up with Lord Parkside, however, we had a splendid visit to the Llanberis Slate Museum and then a superb walk around some of the mid-levels of the old Dinoriwic slate quarry that are accessible to the public (photos to follow). Many thanks to Neil for doing all the driving and his hospitality, and also to Martin for his hospitality after we descended from the mountain (we did not remain hungry for long, once we arrived as his mountain lair! )
Ohmisterporter
Nice video. I was quite amused by it: the Mallett seems to be running quite fast and the Fairlie sort of ambling along behind. All due to different wheel diameters no doubt.
RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted November 28, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 28, 2011 Two still versions of the above. Plus a link http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/47922-seeking-the-trawsfynydd-branch/page__fromsearch__1 to disused railway delights found on the same day. John_Hughes
What time does this train run in this direction please? Leaving Port at 11.00 and again at 14.15 this Saturday and Sunday only, arriving in Beddgelert 45 minutes later; 20 minute layover in Beddgelert on both trips, and most are now double-headed with the combination shown. Sunny intervals forecast for Saturday - 'If you have never seen Pont Aberglaslyn in sunlight, then you still have something to live for.'
exet1095
The train leaves Port with the Mallet on the front and the Fairlie on the back (front being the Caernarfon end) and then runs to Hafod-y-Llyn where the Mallet draws forward, the Fairlie draws back, runs round, and then tucks inside the Mallet (which has steam sanders I believe) for the run through the pass to Beddgelert. On the return journey the changeover from double-headed to top-and-tail is made at Pont Croesor. Hopefully we'll be on it this Sunday, children's illnesses permitting... Lots of fun shunting and watering at Beddgelert too, and there is a good eal on a meal at Spooner's when you buy a ticket.
coachmann
Thanks John and excet. I know the route pretty well below Bedgellert but parking can be a biggie!
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted November 29, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 29, 2011 It just needed a Beyer-Garret banking the train to have all three forms of articulated steam locomotives on one train.
John_Hughes
Anybody care to make a new Kitson-Meyer to give us yet another type of articulated engine? And add a Mallet just to complete the set?

exet1095
Hoping to be there this Sunday if my six-month-old son has recovered from a nasty lurgy, up and back on the morning train. Paul
Kickstart
Where is the Mallet normally based please? To add to the earlier links, it comes from the Statfold Barn Railway, near Tamworth. http://www.statfoldbarnrailway.co.uk/ They have a couple of open days each year. Guest Phil
Good stuff Cap'n and thanks for posting. The fairlie appeared to only be chuffing from the uphill end, presume that was OK. Was Lord Parkside well ? We don't seem to see a great deal of the trials and tribulations of Kinmundy and Parkside acquisition these days
Phil Traxson
Good stuff Cap'n and thanks for posting. The fairlie appeared to only be chuffing from the uphill end, presume that was OK. Its slightly downhill there, in that direction, so the loco would be drifting, the steam you could see would be the exhaust from the vacuum ejector which is directed up that chimney. Regards Phil T. exet1095
I was there on Sunday for the last run. At Beddgelert the Mallet chuffed-off into the rain for a light-engine trip to Dinas. Meanwhile, here is a picture I took at beginning of Novermber
