Bristol O Gauge Show 22nd January 2012

With all the flurry of posts on 7mm modelling its only right that this excellent show is advertised for those not in the know.

Well worth going for the layouts, traders and demonstrators.

Also one of the few exhibitions with carpet on the floor so makes being on your feet for a few hours more comfortable.

See you there.

I'll be there. Paul (he of Thames Wharf Yard but no RMweb login :O ) and I will on the Sodbury Vale Model Railway Club stand. We'll have a board of our new layout and a few bits'n'pieces no doubt.

Model Rail is supporting this event as in previous years. Messrs Lowery, Jones and Leigh will be there. I am hoping, if I can get it in the car, to bring the 'most complete' of THE RAILWAY CHILDREN/Oakworth baseboards with me. Must remember to forget the credit card!!

Despite not being an O gauge modeler, I went along for a browse as it is only 15 mins from home. A well laid out show, lot of room between aisles, friendly people and all in a good cause :)

Fortunately I managed to resist the temptation of any of the goodies on offer, of which there were plenty!

Yes, second that.

An excellent show as always and the early entry to get a coffee and bacon roll is a good way to start the day before the rush to buy as much as possible in the shortest time. :sungum:

Also nice to sit and chat to David Siddall, Warspite and Tim C about all things O Gauge and one or two other things.

And an extra big thanks to Tim C for the offer of some rectangular white LED's. They will be a big help. Thanks. :locomotive:

The venue was fine, plenty of space in the aisles, lots of traders and demonstrators, but, and this is a big but, so many layouts had nothing moving. 'Cherry Orchard' had at least 4 different operational areas, but I stood at the of the layout looking down the whole length, and there was no movement at all. 'Hazlehurst' was the same - the movement card said '#34 - Freight through Platform 1' but after 3 minutes it still hadn't appeared. 'Invergeachy' was struggling for a lack of operators, 'Esme River Road', despite being exquisitely modelled, again had virtually nothing moving, apart from a shay that ran about 5 inchs. On our 2nd visit, there was nothing moving at all.

Maybe the exhibition was more for the traders/buyers than the exhibitors/viewers, maybe I'm more used multi gauge/scale exhibitions, but I, SWMBOand the two lads were a mite disappointed.

I tend to find that the O gauge shows do run at a slower pace as most tend to be 'hand operated'. A lot of the layouts, use three link couplings so the hand of god is used to do the three link shuffle which taking into account the eye sight of the shunters tends to take a bit of time on some occasions.

Those layout I stopped to watch did seem to have a reasonable amount going on which kept my attention. Perhaps I was lucky.

But most of my time was spent shopping as for me that is what most of the exhibitions are for with a smaller amount of time looking at the layouts, demo etc.

The other bit though is meeting friends which is by far the best bit and very rewarding.

I had been planing to go and visit this given that it was within walking distance, in the end I forgot...

One thing that did catch my eye (and seem a really good idea) was the note on the add that "Accompanying wife's are free".

Theres been quite a few shows I have been planning to visit and combine the day with something else and take my fiancée with me. But in the end the cost of paying another £x entry for someone who at the end of the day has no real interest has put us off.

I wonder what our lady modeller friends on here feel about the "free entry for wives" thing? There must be at least one of them who's into O gauge...

Unfortunately it fell the weekend of my wife's birthday so I'm hoping next year it moves...

Pretty much. It's a show for buying bits & bobs from specialist suppliers with a few layouts as a bonus.
