EBay madness

Might well have been highlighted before on this thread, but just in case you missed it first time round....

HOW MUCH DID YOU PAY???

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lima-IC-125-Great-Western-Fag-Packet-Livery-Set-2-7-/111093200644?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item19ddabb704

:O :o :O

And a new way of saying 'Rare' !? (I know it does say so on the box,but......)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AIRFIX-KIT-00-LIMITED-PRODUCTION-MINERAL-WAGON-SCALE-00-VINTAGE-MODEL-NEW-/300946833906?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item4611d441f2

Just how limited was the production of this item, even just considering  the run in this box? several thousand? It's also by another David Bailey competitor.

The box illustration possibly explains several of these wagons I've bought with the transfers in the wrong places!

Personally though, I steer clear of people who put these sort of condition on their listings in bold italics, also a seller that claims he has  "a number of lost items recently" - just plain no - the two main reasons why parcels dont get where they are going - badly wrapped - wrongly addressed

And the third main reason - never posted in the first place! (not saying that this selling would do that but I have encountered it in the past.)

Cor, I'm rich (at the BIN price).  cAnd an I charge extra for them in multiple in the original Airfix brown paper bags?  (well if cr*p boxes actually sell then surely 'vgc' paper bags must be worth a few quid!) :jester:

Or, as I've had happen in the past, sent to the wrong address and then relisted on eBay (I've no absolute proof, but it certainly seemed to be the same item!).

And another rare item (possibly rare unmade, but not otherwise - there's one in front of me as I type!).

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rex-Wagon-Kit-RARE-/370874968785?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item5659deead1

To be pendantic for collectors, these came with 3 link couplings (Queen Mary anchor chain type) and wheels supplied and the buffers needed to be fitted to the headstocks. Neither the buffers nor the couplings would fit without enlarging the holes.

They're usually a quid or two and can come with quite nice spoked wheels, though they're usually a rubbish bakelite type.

EDIT

Here's a tank wagon of the same make from one of our 'weathering' experts....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kit-Built-Abandoned-Oil-Fuel-tank-wagon-WEATHERED-LOOK-suit-Bachmann-Dapol-/400549234107?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item5d429845bb

They also have this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kit-Built-4-Plank-GWR-10t-Open-Coal-wagon-optional-load-PRO-WEATHERED-LOOK-/360716606963?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item53fc629df3

There's also a mineral wagon from the same seller (spot the deliberate error!)

Now, leaving aside the discussion as to whether it should actually be red, why are the plates fitted the wrong way round and there appears to be an excess of brake levers?

I think that's OK. To someone who is scanning the listings by title for a first issue 'non-limited' kit for his collection, he knows he can skip this one.

I've found a box full of these in my loft!

The Nim.

It is pleasing to record that the French are just as bad at all this. This item http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161080836546?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2648  is available new from several well-known French online dealers for 219 euros - 32 less than paid here. Indeed, I bought an identical model, but fitted with an ESU decoder, for 249!

Are some people for real ???? :O  it is bad enough the advertiser being optimistic, but "FFS" there is even a buyer who thinks this model is worth the asking price !!!!! :scratchhead:

The box shifters were selling this model  for  42 quid  a few years ago - timing is everything !!

Everything becomes rarer with time as people use their toys to play with, wear out, damage, throw away - as no new ones are produced and the collectors hoard, the numbers available reduce to a point where "rare" or at least "not often seen for sale" becomes reality. It is then all about what the buyer is prepared to pay.

Heavily weathered to a good standard...... as they used to say on the BBC 'viewers of a nervous disposition should look away now'

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bachmann-Branchline-Re-Built-Scot-The-Black-Watch-4-6-0-No-44102-weathered-/151095365387?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item232dfc4f0b

Amazing how much grime has managed to stick to the engine when the track it's sitting on is spotless ....

I don't see why - the seller says it 'looks ok' - surely he wouldn't tell fibs would he?

Aka "Iggorance is bliss, innit?"

Back to the French. Atlas have one of their subscription series of models going at present. This is for railcars, of which France has an impressive array of the weird and the wonderful going back to 1930-ish. The models are for display, lack a motor, naturally. Which makes this item, one of several just placed look less than a bargain. http://www.ebay.fr/itm/Autorail-Renault-ABH-des-editions-Atlas-/151098523827?pt=FR_YO_JeuxJouetd_TrainsElectriques&hash=item232e2c80b3

Oh, yes, and the prototype is metre gauge!

I've always been rather fascinated by how cheap (at least on a ponds/ton basis) pre-loved armoured vehicles are.  When I first got interested in classic cars back in the very early 80s there was still quite a bit of WW2 stuff changing hands for ridiculously tiny sums.  For some of the more interestingly powered examples the prices were low enough to almost make it viable to buy them for the engines and chuck the rest away (or sell it for the not inconsiderable scrap value).
