Norfolk Southern Heritage Locomotives

There's some good choices in those drawings - I think the railroads are beginning to realise the value of having some "celebrity" locomotives. UP have had their fleet for a while , but it seems that Amtrak discovered that there's a lot of interest in their recent "heritage" repaints , likewise with Iowa Interstate and their Rock Island ES44.

Lots of pictures equals free PR and exposure of the brand on a wider scale , as well as appealing to those with a more nostalgic outlook.

Lets hope some other big companies take note and follow suit in the future.

Now can we find photos of sd70ace's on short trains please? Red NS for me.

A quick look didn't find any NS units on short trains. However, here are a couple of really short trains with SD70Aces in the lead (the problem would be affording the power!) -

And a few more, not quite so extreme -

While they aren't exactly a big company, Pan Am has painted a couple of GP9s in heritage schemes, one in the B&M maroon and one in MEC green, using the simplified switcher scheme.

For a company that historically hasn't cared much about its heritage, this is quite a change of heart. The company said something about the units needed painting anyway and the railfans like this stuff. I suspect some of the staff like that stuff too, the engines are usually the lead units when they go out on the road.

B&M: http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2675325 This engine was originally B&M 1738 and was delivered after B&M had switched to the blue paint scheme, it never carried maroon. http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2577844

MEC: http://kevin_smith.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2844534 This engine was originally B&M 1726.

I'd forgotten about the Pan Am geeps , but yes they look great , and as you say , I suspect the crews like them too - I'm sure I read that they were planning a few heritage repaints , so hopefully more to come.

I suppose from a modelling point of view the only issue is that if your layout becomes full of "celebrity" locomotives , it does look very odd. I've seen UK layouts of depots where nearly every one-off repaint on the network is on display. Short of an open day , I can't really say that that looks right.

  • 2 weeks later...

They're off to a good start then. I've got two trips to the US this year , though mainly over the western side , so I doubt I'll see any of these.

Here's an idea for NS for their 2013 calendar : each month a posed shot of one of these locos in a suitable location. the Virginian one would look great on a coal drag in the mountains, for example.

It's worth a Frothfest! I never thought I would type that....

Note that NS actually took and uploaded that photo to RP. What is the name of that blue? It looks awfully similar to Bugatti Blue. I've only ever seen (in the flesh) Conrail Blue absolutely faded...

Best, Pete.

It seems NS are none to happy at some unofficial pictures leaking out before the loco was released....a pity but I suppose somewhat inevitable in this day of "instant" news.

Next up is 8099 in Southern green and white , there are leaked pics of this online and very nice it looks too , apparently it's having the gold edging to the white panels done as well . 8100 is to be done in Norfolk & Western , 8101 will be Central of Georgia.

Unsurprisingly , the US forums are buzzing with these repaints , so I'm sure we'll keep up with what's going on.
