Actually I think it would look good in gloss black with the gold stripes and lettering, but then it wouldn't be a "proper" livery

 

Just as long as you aren't trying to start a 'Pennsy black vs Pennsy green' discussion....AAAARGH! :D

 

The Interstate one is excellent - I wasn't sure about that from the drawing but it looks really sharp on a modern unit! That orange ZINGS!

A friend sent me this, the story of that photo as told by the photographer:

 

"It would probably have taken several weeks of arranging and planning to get the photo setup that presented itself Friday evening near Welch, West VA: I was following the Norfolk and Western heritage unit, on train 746, from Williamson towards Bluefield on its maiden voyage pulling revenue. After leaving Williamson, the highway veers away from the mainline, so I lost track of the train. After an hour and a half of being "in the dark" I stopped at Roderfield to attempt a shot of the train exiting one of the "Heartland" tunnels. Cell phone service does not exist here, so I had no way to find out if I was ahead of the train or not. There was an old-fashioned trackside call-box beside the signal, so I called the dispatcher in Bluefield to see where the train was. It was about 10 miles away, and it would stop near Welch at a control point named "Farm" to add helper engines on the rear to get the train over the mountain into Bluefield. I also knew the Southern heritage unit had been working in the helper pool out of Bluefield, so I asked her if she knew where engine number 8099 was at. She said it was leaving Bluefield and should be at "Farm" about the same time as the other train. She said she could have them stop at Farm for a photo op if I wanted. Of course I wanted, this is my chance at illustrating history! I got my shot of the coal train exiting the tunnel, then went to Farm and waited for the moment. Sure enough, 746 pulled up and stopped, and while they were attaching a helper engine on the rear, the next helper set arrived with the Southern engine and posed beside the NW engine. The helper set with the Southern unit would have to sit here and wait for the next train anyway, so the best part of the whole thing is that no trains were delayed at all, and no special arrangements had to be made. If I had to choose two heritage locomotive for a side by side shot, it would have been these two since these two railroads are what started NS 30 years ago. It was Friday the 13th, but I think that has become a good-luck day for me. Being in the right place at the right time sure pays off!"

I agree; it is a nice livery, but somehow, in this case, it does not quite work. I presume it is because the livery was designed to fit around the curves of a streamlined loco - and it would be quite hard to find anything with more angles, lumps and bumps on it than this one!

Overall, full marks to NS for this exercise. Difficult to imagine a UK equivalent - an HST with the power cars in garter blue and varnished teak for the vehicles in between? On second thoughts, probably best not.

As a Pennsy fan, I think it is probably the worst Pennsy livery they could have chosen (ok, Tuscan single stripe might have been worse).

No - but i've been away in wet wales for a week so not had chance to catch up!

 

I think that finishes off the ES44ACs which NS has been painting themselves - the SD70ACes are supposedly to be factory painted by EMD - all are due in service by June according to the original press release so they had better get a wiggle on!

Someone mentioned to me yesterday or rather I overheard it at a model shop that NS have also quietly repainted engine # 1776 in the Bi Centennial livery, essentially a copy of the first US flag.

Anyone know if this is true?

I think 1776 is now owned by a museum group , but it has definately been repainted in that scheme - it was done a few weeks ago when the first heritage repaints were emerging , and I guess has been overshadowed by them. There were pics of it online somewhere.

From a modellers perspective, well this modellers perspective anyway, all of these repaints into bright paint jobs is great. One of the things that attracted me to American railroads was the colourful aspect and the fact that they were often kept quite clean. Much more aestheticly pleasing than filthy BR blue,I think.

I wander if CSX could be tempted away from their current dip job, which is very reminiscent of BR blue.

Some of these NS paint schemes are really nice.

Well, NS 8114 seems to be the photographers favourite, so far, amongst the "Heritage" liveries - purely on the amount of photos of the thing!
