Newbryford's mostly Yellow workbench - "it's a drag, man......."

Recommended Posts

A few of the West Coast stock from my hard drive. I may have some of the others as prints, but will have to sort them out.  80220, I don't have but a similar coach enclosed.

Hope these help, and can be of use to other 'modern image' people.

Merf.

Most of my previous coach conversions have included replacement door handles and handrails. Not too time consuming when dealing with one or two vehicles at a time, but for 12 coaches, life is too short! In the case of this set, I'm not going to replace them. The end handrails however, will be replaced as many of them are shorter than those originaly fitted. They won't look out of place as the Bachy Mk1's have seperately fitted handrail/filler pipes anyway.

As the set will run together, there'll be a consistent level of detailing aong the set.

Cheers,

Mick

Searching pics of my SRPS/WCRC Mk1 FO's and they do seem a bit "weather beaten"................

The plan - if I remember - is to paint the coachs in batches of 3 or 4 at a time, using slightly different shades of maroon.

Cheers,

Mick

Id be careful with the idea of rakes of these. The SRPS stock is leased by both EWS and DBS when needed for charter work as the stock is dual braked. They try not to mix the stock between the two, as it does cause difficutlies reforming the rakes. I know WCRC have taken on the SRPS stock on long term use before.

The SRPS stock tends to be the same BR Maroon style appearance, with the wording of the owning group under the first window on each of their coaches. Normally I dont think there is a BR totem in the middle of the coach. The shade of Maroon between SRPS and WCRC is much darker.

Heres a pic of the full rake being used by DBS for the Cathedrals Express Tour in 2013.... http://www.blackhatrailwaypictures.co.uk/p340977118/h5fa28d7e#h5fa28d7e

Heres another photo to illustrate what I mean about the SRPS stock.... its all the same rake, owned by SRPS, as this was a DBS job, so theres no WCRC stock there, but you might think so given the shade differences.

http://www.blackhatrailwaypictures.co.uk/p357840468/h5fa22ea2#h5fa22ea2

Easy way out is to have the right transfers and WCRC logos on all their stock and run the two rakes seperately.

Hi David - thanks for the info.

I just have a few pics of SRPS/WCRC rakes, but I know that they do move around - I wasn't planning on doing any SRPS branded stock.

Part of the reason to do the painting in batches is because of the relatively quick fading of maroon from new.

SRPS only has the one rake though? Hence as far as I know when its hired out its normally kept as one set and not split. Then returned after hire. Its dual braked, so often found with both DBS or WCRC work. You might find the odd coach with a WCRC set, but I find this to be the exception to the rule rather than commonplace.

When I typed SRPS/WCRC rakes - I meant my collection of SRPS/WCRC photos!

One set I've photographed - Jul 2013 Carlisle

21241 (crimson/cream)/4973/99318/3150/99348/3115 (SRPS branded)/3096 (SRPS branded)/1961 (green)/99347/3093 "Florence".

Quite an odd rake!

Mick

More Optical car.

3mm white LED's are fitted inside the central section. There are 7 in total, powered from a TCS function decoder. I split the outputs to feed 3 and 4 LED's.

This is a pic of the 4 set

attachicon.gifSGTm.jpg

Meanwhile - the body is painted gloss black ready for transfers. and the LED's have a test run. This shows up a little bit of light bleed where the body isn't fully fixed to the chassis. Cured by a bit of blu-tack!

There is a temporary feed to the decoder, before pickups were fitted.

attachicon.gifSGTn.jpg

Then off for final transfers and a coat of stain varnish. The transfers were obtained from Frank Warner at Scale Model Transfers - sadly no longer available, but I believe Railtec Models now produce SGT transfers. In my case, it's branded up pre-2009 when it then acquired the later Network Rail font.

And this is the final result.

After a couple of weeks off modelling due to an enforced holiday (!), I've got back in the shed tonight.

The stripped sides for the first three of the WCRC rake had a strange white soft powdery residue on them - possibly from using Halfords low viscosity DOT 4 brake fluid. They were initially stripped using Fairy Powerspray, that I was using for the first time, but it didn't remove all the paint, so they were dipped in the brake fluid to finish them off. I did notice that one of the sides seemed to become a bit soft, so they were taken out immediately, washed off and left for a couple of weeks.

A clean with Cif and a toothbrush seems to have removed the white stuff and the sides are not soft anymore.

(As an aside, I dipped an old Airfix mk2 in the same brake fluid and no issues with any residue or softening)

I'll probably give the sides a coat of primer tomorrow.

In the meantime, I've had a tidy up of my yellow coach projects and will try to finish them ASAP.

SGT pairs 977985/977986, 72630/99666, TIC 977974, RSC 977868, and PLPR's 1256 & 72639 are on the hit list.

Pics soon.

Mick

The shutter doors have been added to 80220. I've started on the blanked windows for 99318

Second fix.

99318 at the top.

80220  I've fixed the extra "crack" in the shutter door, with a gentle file of the plastic. The brake compartment door needs sealing strips - these will be from thin art paper, rather than plasticard, as that's too thick - even at 5 thou.

Bottom two are BSK 99723, with one set of brake doors sealed up.

99318 has had the final fill/rub down/prime.

There are two thin vertical grilles that have been added in it's conversion to a small kitchen.

WCRC have a few "odd" coaches in their midst. 99318 is an example of a SO converted to a catering vehicle. 99316 is a former FK 13321, but has been converted into a kitchen car and very recognisable with it's windows painted out.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/dan700/14926886012/

However, my FK will becme 13320. Now converted to a FO/dining car. This is the corridor side of 13320 "Anna"

https://www.flickr.com/photos/lereddog/13911273611/in/set-72157633306350688

But FK's normally have a door in the corridor side............

So it's out with the styrene and filler. I've previously used just filler to fill in the door grooves, but find that this can shrink and crack over time, revealing the joint lines. Hee, I've used styrene rod and a suitable amount of solvent to soften it and press into the joints. It is left overnight - preferably longer to harden fully, being carved down with a sharp blade and finished off with a sand and final fill/prime

post-408-0-47830300-1429133751_thumb.jpg

This is the end result. One side did have a door in the middle........ Can you tell which one?

post-408-0-33803500-1429133754_thumb.jpg

I've used red primer in this case as I want to create a slightly different finished shade to other coaches in the rake (four others also have been primed in red for the same reason)

Mick

....or you could just use a Bachy 'Restaurant car' instead, no doors on either side!

Great work BTW! :D

Jack.

WCRC started with a FK......... :O

More work on the WCRC set.

Just to highlight the difference between grey primer and red oxide primer. The eventual finish will be satin varnished.

Roofs painted and orange cantrail stripes have been done.

The orange line has been done using the same technique as shown here

Hopefully, the transfers will soon be here.

You've got too much spare time on your hands Mick!

Not at all - I just don't waste it watching footy on telly........

Couple hours spare this afternoon in the shed - now off to work for a couple more.

Mick

Power for the WCRC set has been renumbered. Modern OHLE warning flashes also added.

post-408-0-65352500-1431899056_thumb.jpg

RMB 1861 has a panelled over window. Not the usual flush finish. In this case, I graually enlarged the window with a file and squared off the corners. Then fitted with a blank of plasticard and glued in so it stands slighly proud of the door.

post-408-0-07862600-1431899055_thumb.jpg

Ends have been painted black as required, orange stripes and OHLE flashes as required.

post-408-0-78912000-1431899057_thumb.jpg

The transfers from Railtec to complete them should be with me in a few days.

Mick

And a project for Deadman's Lane - a London Midland 170.

Fitted with a sound decoder and Express Models lighting kit.

Having obtained a couple of "old" 21 pin v3.5 decoders from Legomanbiffo, one is used here with a ESU 51967 21 pin breakout board as the Bachy 170 isn't DCC ready and needs hardwiring.

Before soldering and tidying up.

post-408-0-56440000-1431899809_thumb.jpg

After. Heat shrink sleeving is used to keep it all in place. The socket is to connect to the lighting kit on the body.

Great work as usual Mick.

Also I'm making my way to DEMU for the first time this year so look forward to saying hi.

Andy

Just look out for the "mostly yellow" table. Must remember to take a KFA.

Cheers,

Mick
