Kirkby Luneside (Original): End of the line....

Michael, thanks for the link and comments.

Peter - the distance between the line and sidewall is a consequence of some initial estimates I made of a typical S&C viaduct, based on photos. Maybe I judged it too wide!

Anyway - Young, Youngish, old or ancient Lunesters.... thanks for the efforts you've made on my behalf. I'm going to keep it very simple and ballast right up to the parapet walls. I suspect the ledge was a refurbishment item, and even if it wasn't, is there such a thing as a "standard" S&C viaduct. So - the KISS and Rule 1 principles apply here....easier all round!

cheers,

Jeff

Jeff, that is certainly what I would do, KISS,

NO NOT KISSES, :O  I am not that sort of person, :nono:  :nono:  :nono:  :nono:  :nono:  :nono:  Hahahhaaa

Just BODGED IT AGAIN :sungum:

Jeff, are you going to put a catch pit and 'gusher' in for the drains around the tunnel mouth?

I'm wondering if the 'walkways' on Ribblehead are something to do with drainage from when they 'discovered' the 9" square holes in the waterproof layer while they singled the line across it?

I do like agood debate, and we seem to be back on it again here!

Totally agree with you there. The thing is, these are things that are important if you are ballasting in general and viaducts specifically, in my case. Yet we often labour in the dark - why? Pooling expertise is fun and VERY helpful!

I've just come in from the bunker. I've ballasted up to the parapet with 2mm Fine ballast BUT, to maintain a distinction between the line ballast and the outside, I've used a different shade of grey: WS for the line, Carrs light grey for the outside. The Carrs is actually darker than the WS, but I don't mind - and I'm going to weather the line ballast as well. Pics tomorrow.

As for catch pits and a gusher, well, I'd consider putting them in if I knew what they were!

The Catch pits are where the water drains into (visible in the photo of the tunnel mouth from eons ago!) and we talked about making a gusher out of the side of the 'cliff edge' so the water could drain into the river lune.... ;-}

I'm looking forward to seeing the wethering of the ballast as at the moment it's all looking far to clinical, and I'm not too sure about the 'ash' cess, I would have thought it would have been more of a grey colour (all the ash and clinker I get out of the Rayburn is a greyey colour) and all the cinder paths I've walked on are not as dark as that cess.... But it might be me! (often is on here!!)

Here's one of the "old" pics, Andy.... Is the catch pit labelled correctly?

Here's a photo showing the outer Carrs ballast layer.

Both WS and Carrs are grey - I like the contrast as it enhances the illusion that the main line ballast is deeper than it is.

Edit: In case of any argument regarding colour differences.... The main line has recently been re-ballasted and hence looks cleaner and lighter than the outer part!!

Jeff my old mate,

In the grand scheme of things will you ever see it once you have the Station and Goods yard all detailed and other things to look at?

You have a lot of work to do and that is something you can go back to once the layout is up and running and you want a little job on a Sunday Morning whilst watching the 9.40 Minerals behind the WD trundling through.

I like the Bogiclogic but I must be dense because I cannot see how water gets in to that catch pit in the photo I bet the damn stuff soaks away through the ballast. Hang on isn't the ballast meant to drain through.

Ah, there's a trick to it.  The catch pit sits on top of a drain and is made out of rectangular concrete frame sections.  When the frame sections are assembled there are gaps between them in various places and so water finds its way in (and into the pipes directly in some cases).  But these are standard track drains and not be confused with drainage culverts and channel;s found at the mouths of some tunnels.

Thanks Mike so the water drains through the ballast and collects in the catch pit which presumably has a drain outlet or a soakaway. The grill at the top is for access then.

Evening all. I've just come in from my daily fix of patio building.

With apologies for those who've "seen it all before", here's the latest state of the viaduct. I'm going to get some coffee and ballast the left margin of the main line, using the Carrs 2mm Fine Grey.

Sounds like you've been drinking something a bit stronger than coffee, Andy? Tea, might I suggest?

I've got the ballasting bug at the moment, so while it lasts I'll try and cover the rest of the curve (including 4 turnouts - that should be interesting) round to the station area.

Working in the viaduct area reminds me that the tunnel portal is far from complete. Oh dear - ANOTHER job....!!

I've stopped for the day...er..rather that was yesterday... now, I guess, it's tomorrow...well, from yesterday's point of view... :mosking:  ...something you seem to specialise in with those late sessions in the bunker.....

Anyway, thought I'd pop by and see how your layout is doing.

Pretty grand by the looks of it and lots of interesting info appearing here too.

Not sure exactly where it was but we passed one like the one at Blea Moor on the way back from York last week.  We passed it all too quickly so no photo  and I only noticed it for what it is because of KL.

Hi Polly.

You are correct about the late sessions. Maybe it's the late-night coffee, but I often feel inspired to tackle tasks I've previously put off when I go into the bunker at around 10.30pm. It's very pleasant getting on with the job when those around you are heading off to bed, and the world is quiet. Certainly different from 6am when I struggle to keep my eyes open and my legs ache from the previous days concreting efforts!!

Going in now for a quick ballast job....

Update: After more garden work, I've grime-sprayed an intersection of curved points at the exit of the station. All blades duly cleaned before the paint dried (though it's easy enough to scrape off with your finger nail when dry).

This area will be ballasted in the morning. Pics to follow.

The bunker now resembles the atmosphere of Jupiter - toxic with solvent - so a hasty retreat, leaving all doors open, has taken place!

Get back out there with a face mask, :O  there are many hours of work to be done yet tonight.

hahaaaaha

Bodgit

Nice to see you are as caring as ever, Andy!!

The worst thing about the bunker at the mo is the temperature - with having the door open earlier today, it's now 24C in there (the lights don't help). So hopefully cooling down a bit right now.

I'll be in there at 6 with the PVA. In the meantime, I'll pop over to Bute Road and see if you've put the finishing touches to the project!!  :jester:

Ah...well...there might not be any seed/turfs left....I seem to have got through an awful lot of it on Camel Quay...think I may have gone over the top on the PVA.   You know, dollop it on and plonk on the GR*** a la a certain Bodgit Esq.

:tomato: 'Scuse me while I duck 'n' dodge...

The tall stuff has yet to grow be cut to size and stuck on to look natural...I've got a plan but, in KL terms, it may take a while cos I'm going to need to make a lot of it....and blend in three different colours - gold with light and medium green....fiddly....it's gonna be very fiddly....some might suggest static grass/teddy bear fur....but we'll see....

....I wonder which Jeff would choose [er.....no need to answer that, Jeff....] ....we've already seen his stone by stone walling....and that is brill....

Enough nonsense scenics for one day....clear up now before dragging myself up the apples and pears....
