Southern Region photos 1980s.

Good morning all,

Really enjoying this thread! Steadily scanning through loads of slides from this era and managed a few trips 'daan saarf' from my (then) Midlands base not realising I would move to Hampshire in the mid-1990'S!

A couple of my mediocre efforts attached. I know the photo of 50050 is out of the era but was only time I saw a 50 in the docks on an Ocean Liner Special for QE2 when I worked in the Port of Southampton!

Andy

Interesting to see that the last shot of the thumper has no running number on it. Don't thinki've ever come across that before. I assume that the unit had only just been reformed.

I don't have enough early stuff of the right era to add except these fairly poor examples:

'Maggot' DEMU 207202 at Eastbourne on the short lived Brighton to Ashford run. From memory had hardly anyone on it in the middle of the day, went like stink and rattled your fillings out in the motor car!!! (Maggot due to the full width former 4-CEP TSO in the middle that was wider than the two driving cars, sort of latter day Tadpole really)

Evening all,

Thanks for the comment about the thumper at Winchester - never noticed that before!

A few more to add to this excellent thread. I will scan in some BRC&W Type 2's (AKA Class 33!) tomorrow.

Just noticed that captions can be seen if you 'hovver' mouse over image.

4TC 8031 and 4REP 3011 are seen in this evening view of Waterloo station.

The photo's certainly bring back memories although I think the 4REP is a 4VEP on a Waterloo - Pompey stopper.

The REP's themselves were lively units and many years ago during a cab ride on from Bournemouth - Waterloo (non-stop Southampton - Waterloo) the driver pointed out the speedo which indicated 100+ as we approached Surbiton. Mind you I wasn't sure how accurate the speedo was.

Some shots taken in 1986. The Purley Oaks ones show the main building where the Croydon Model Railway Society clubrooms were at platform level until the fire in 1989 ended that and the main buildings on platform 1 were then demolished

A REP had 3200hp on tap and the speedos were usually quite accurate, no more than 5mph error usually.

More great pics everyone, The pic of 33027 with ERPS headboard was taken at Eastleigh depot on an open day, the loco has a rope attached as it was being pulled by a tug of war team, or something like that, I think it was a fund raiser. Though I could be wrong as I was only young at the time. Highlight of the day was a class 40 arriving on a railtour.

As for REPs they certainly did a 100+ I remember seeing it number of times, as you could see the speedo in the cab where the units joined.

Cheers Peter.

I'll scan some more of my photos and slides in over the next few evenings but here are a couple for today.

4 Vep 3095 approaching Chichester. Probably taken between August 1985 and December 1987 when I worked in the city.

4 Bep 2305 at Clapham Junction. I remember taking this shot because even in the 1980s I was surprised that the shunter could get way with riding on the steps of the bogie above the juice rail whilst the unit was moving !

More when I can get to my photos and slides.

Some more from Terry Ventham's archive, used with permission of course.

All these were taken from the water works at Otterbourne, just south of Shawford between Eastleigh and Winchester, where Terry spent his working life.

4CIG 7307 heads a Victoria to Brighton service. The photo is taken from the public foot crossing between Burgess Hill and Hassocks stations.

One of my favourite photos.

47088 'Samson' powers the 1520 Brighton to Manchester at Maidenbower, Three Bridges. It took me a while to work out the location of this and 3 other slides taken at the same location. The eventually give away was the M23 road bridge in the background. Maidenbower foot crossing where this photo is taken had been replaced by a footbridge.

One of my duties as a Relief Clerk at Brighton included the switchboard. This day I brought my camera with me and ended up taking photos of the signalbox on fire, AFTER having taken the 999 call from the traffic regulator and connecting him to the emergency operator!

Restricted working in and out of Brighton station remained in operation for several days.

Photo taken 1982?

Good evening all,

Better half out for a Girls Book Club meal so a few minutes nostalgia scanning in slides. BRCW Type 3 AKA Class 33 attached. Only tonight did I realise not a single shot of 'Slim Jim (332XX) built to narrower profile for Hastings - Tonbridge line and to my shame only realised that D6593/33208 on the Watercress is one of these beasts!

Apologies for 33099 being 'Off Piste' at BNS but I can't recall ever seeing another 33 here.
