The ultimate kit?

Aaannd suddenly I see just how much modelling food chain there is ahead of me.

The perks of giving nearly twenty five years of free time to it (the MHR)!

I've been busy sorting out the smaller bits into groups (sort of). This was a bit of a job as a lot of these bits were in a 'sweepings' sack, but I think I'm getting there.

I had a call from the gent acting on behalf of the estate, apparently he has found some more bits and bobs for this project including the safety and clack valves along with some castings, all of which he is going to send to me.

This project will now enter a hiatus for a while as I have to concentrate on reinstating the workshop which has become a repository for all kinds of (useful?) junk over the years. To this end the existing garden shed, the roof of which I fell through whilst trimming some bl**dy leylandi belonging to my neighbour, will have to be demolished and a new one purchased for storage of said (useful?) junk, bike, lawnmower etc.

Endless....

Here's some of the smaller bits:

What sort of motor and gearbox are you going to use.

OK, I've got my coat on.

OzzyO.

The guy really thought about it, it's a very heavy elastic band drive with a steam driven winder upper.

Good grief Phil, I'm just amazed at the quantities and quality of those parts. It will be a fantastic build and I shall certainly follow every update on this wonderful machine.

Can I put my name down for a driving lesson?

Of course I may not live that long. ;)

Sort of - sitrep is as follows ;

new tin shed for storage of bike, mower etc. erected and functional.

workshop pretty much sorted out, roof leak mended, new dro head for lathe purchased.

space to be found, new cabinets, drawers etc. to be built to house all the MN bits in workshop (and get them out of the dining room....)

new plan hatched which is to get everything ready for MN build but then put into hiatus for the two years till my retirement from work. This will hopefully give me time to get Bodge City and the loft layout (of which there have been pictures on here many moons ago) into a state where I can play trains. This should mean that I can crack on with the MN without too many distractions (apart from the odd day on the MHR) - I do mean crack on too, I'm aiming for a proper working week (40-50 hrs most weeks) down there.

I think / hope that this approach will give me the best chance of completing what is a fearfully complex engineering job, even with the amount of ready made bits I have. It won't be any good, at my age, to go for the two hours an evening approach if I want to get it anywhere near finished.

We shall see.....

edit, yep digital read out, sorry I've been up all night on call out!

The lathe came from the Dept of Oceanography at Soton University, and when I got it had only been used for turning plastics or a bit of non ferrous here and there. Unfortunately for me the leadscrew etc. had been swapped for a metric setup and they threw out the imperial one.

Back in the late 90's there used to be a guy in Newbury who sold and set up dros on lathes using new slides but second hand head units which were the old Anilam Miniwizards. I paid £250 for the whole thing, installation and set up included.

This thing has been brilliant, but when the roof leaked I think that some water got into it and blew something inside. I took it to a mate of mine who knows about these things, nothing doing there, tried another 'specialist' he wanted £100 just to look at it, so I gave up and decided that everything in the future would have to be converted to metric.

A-n-y-w-a-y, one day I typed in Anilam into ebay (been looking on there with no success previously) and up popped the self same head unit as mine, not tested, spares or repair for £25!

I thought, worth a punt, bought it and it works fine, so happy days.

edit #2 - this is on the Colchester, not the baby Sieg.

Hello PhilH,

fitted one to my big lathe (about the size of a Myford 7) cross slide. I've never looked back, cost me about £35. Good tools you only buy once and then forget the price.

When i did my apprenticeship we had to wind the handles back to get rid of the backlash, then digital read outs came along and they were just brilliant,Makes things 100% better and quicker Then cncs But we will not talk about those, :nono: Glad youve fixed your roof ive a small leak in mine and was waiting for the better weather but we will not talk about that either :nono: nice to see your going to put a lot of time into it when you retire keep us posted on progress, about 30 years ago there was a strike at the engineering company that i worked for for a 3 week period so i treated every day like a work day and went in my workshop for a 8 hour period by the time i went back to work i finished the chassis complete for a 5 inch royal scott. Just came across this when looking for something else, so an update...sadly the enormity of the task, my advancing years and the realisation that I didn't want to spend countless hours shut away in my workshop all added up and the decision was taken to pass this project on to someone who was young enough and skilled enough to do it justice. And so it was swapped for a fully finished 1 1/2" scale Allchin traction engine which has given me and my grandchildren lots of steamy fun.

I saw 5" gauge locomotive, a  Black 5, at a carboot/ antique sale would you believe. It was complete but looked like it had been standing a while and had been painted a red colour, probably primer although it looked a bit shiny. The chap said he wanted £1500 for it but I bet he would have taken a grand. I couldn't spend that kind of money but I would love to have cleaned it and painted and then stuck it in my living room. Probably worth a lot more than the chap was asking.
