Those small models are so hard to paint, without a cruel close up the cat will make a lovely new addition...
if you can get a hint of the upside down v under his nose (at least one of which which will of course end up too long...but you just re white the excess)
also use a VERY pale and thin black wash to infer shadow between the legs.
nice work....
especially on the ear definition, and on the eyes....i always have trouble getting them aligned properly. Yours are excellent.

Dunno Jaz, I don't really find small figures that hard to do. Eyes are good, brushes are good, skills I'm told are good and I have my own methods of holding small objects without touching them. :)

Cheers, Reece

Reece,

Cream is always difficult and I am not sure why.  Looking good though.

Hello Chris,

Thanks for the comment.

The Cream tends to go on white better than most other colours - tis sort of like painting red or yellow. I don't find it difficult, it just takes slightly longer to get a finish because of the multiple thin coats - this is due to the colour not having much pigment compared to a stronger colour.

Unlike the Chocolate Brown which I can do in about two or coats.

I'm looking forward to seeing more on your project, tis looking good with the legs on!

Hi Reece, was good to talk to you today. Just had a look through your thread....some very impressive stuff going on  :senile:

Hi Lee,

Thanks for the kind comment,

Twas good talking to you too, always happy to have a chat. I'm having a good read of your 'Modifying & Detailing' thread - It's good to see a fellow BR blue modeller on here, slightly different region but the colours stay the same! Most impressive and interesting projects.

My thread isn't as much layout orientated at the moment, more focusing on top and others. But I'll get a few more pictures up of my project soon, when it's a little more complete - just track and a few trains on 22ft of board at the moment.

Your new mini sized layout is particularly interesting, I did follow your loft layout when you started that a while ago so I look forward to seeing more.

Reece,

When I said difficult I was referring to its covering power.

As for the cat, it does look good.  Make the most of painting small things like that.  I have said somewhere what I did twenty years ago with room lighting I now have to do with my glasses on through a magnifying glass that has a light round it.  You do not need to worry about that it as I have about forty years on you!

The Signalman's house gains a conservatory. The roof still awaits it's replacement slates.

The conservatory is a Wills kit I bought the other day for a couple of quid, not particularly easy to put together (however I'm sure it would have taken some 5 minutes) - Naturally there are no instructions. Without getting too technical I had to remove part of the back wall included in the kit to attach to the roof and finding my own way of constructing it.
The kit includes a bench and a water butt, the conservatory I've supported on some Wills 'random' style paving slabs.

Just needs painting, glazing with a few odd potted plants in the window. :)

  • 3 weeks later...

Been an interesting few weeks... well not really mainly working in a new job and coming home tired.

But I've had a load of stuff come in the post over the past few days which has allowed me to really make some progress on some things - On one small project I don't believe I've really mentioned, a Class 33 which I bought years ago to go with my PW/Engineers train. The problem with it was it never ran correctly when I bought it, just been sitting up in the other workshop in it's box until recently when I decided to dig it out, dismantle it, diagnose the problem and fix it. To go into more detail the bogie was hanging off and it made strange noises when going around corners etc.

What seems to be a common problem with them is with some that get past quality control/damaged in transit etc (revealed via google search etc) is this part of the bogie is busted. So I ordered the parts needed and replaced it.

While ordering a replacement component I ordered the newer style wheel sets which are available as spares to replace the older wheel sets - I think it's pretty well known so I won't go into detail. They were quite easy to fit, just a mater of removing the bottom bogie plate removing the existing grubby old and installing the new with small blob of grease on the gears - Instantly on the track much improved running quality is noticeable.

I've one more item to fit covering the roof fan and grill, mainly to replace the sad fail of plastic mouldings shown below - I'm hoping this will greatly aid the fitting of DCC Sound as well soon.

More recently I have also acquired vast amounts of kits for my model including wagons, mainly buildings and odd detailing items. Plus a few new additions to the fleet

Including this one: 47 560 Tamar

In regards to detailing parts my Station Building items have arrived which will soon allow me to build up the rest of the building and install canopies. Booking Office:

This is pretty much what comes in the Springside Booking Office Kit for £9.60:

A pair of cupboards, two ticket racks, notice board, bit of counter with the ticket stamp on it, a couple of GWR style stools, a round style stove with coal bucket, an old style fire extinguisher, pair of telephones, some instructions with illustrations and a couple of really ugly figures.

I think I'm going to have to have a think about the counter side slightly and I'll install a chimney pipe for the stove. I might use one or two bits left over from a few Signal Box interior kits as well.

Probably put up as I go along as I don't want to bore you to death with inventories of items or pictures of the workbench covered in mounds of unmade kits I'm going to use.... Just say I bought some nice things essential for a BR (W) / Cornish Rail scene, should see it all unfold soon!

Evening All,

The Booking office has progressed over the last few days and is now pretty much complete. I've finished and fitted most of the items, and I'll get some Booking Office Staff at some point. I think it'll look good with a light in there!

I've also fitted a small square of 'ultra clear' type plastic for the ticket window.

Good evening,

Not too much has been happening lately, I've bought I few new items for my railway and visited the Hayle Show the other day - just taken the train down to the show. Then a couple of days later visited KMRC.

Bought A few items including the new Bachmann Inspection Saloon and the much awaited All Bran.... brand new Bachmann Class 101 in BR Blue/Grey livery, which was the last one in the shop.

During the show a friend got to the second hand stand before I did and got himself one St Ivel Milk tank, therefore I was naturally jealous and bought Six to add to my fleet of Milk Tanks.
On an additional lesson learned note, during the show I seen the new Bachmann 101 on the KMRC stand and in chatting to Bill I told him about it and he bought it.

The Tanks were quite grubby when I got them so I disassembled them, cleaned them and then reassembled them. They currently await replacement Wheel Sets, Couplings and Pipes. (the usual), I hope to have them ready for a show West Fraddon is booked for down Carn Brea in November.

In my opinion they don't look too bad, the creamery really needs finishing and planting on the layout.

Another small item I've been working on is a Shunter's Cabin for a friend's layout, it's progressing nicely - based on drawings from a real building. You'll also note my Station building has gained doors! I painted these along with a number of other items that also needed to be painted in the appropriate shade of BR W Chocolate Brown

That really does look the part

Its rather reminiscent of the old mess room at Newton, but looks like its a bit too modern for there really :D

Excellent Reece, I particularly like the window.

Very nice work Reece.

Cheers guys for the kind comments, tis much appreciated :)

Good Evening,

The earlier this week I done some more work on my friend's layout, mainly finishing off his lifting bridge I installed. It's now all wired up and the track attached in my usual way and fixed at each end with the joints done. All runs as it should and the rear of the layout is easily accessible without the need to crouch underneath.

I'll be adding a frame to it to prevent it sagging or warping in the future, my mate just needs to get some more wood.
I quite like his biscuit jar. :)

He bought the Unit more recently.

Meanwhile I'm continuing to make progress on his turntable, still more work to do before completion but it looks quite visually pleasing so far with my 50 149 on it.

What you've added makes all the difference! :)

Well that's what the man ordered to go in front his engine shed. I used a load of drawings/measurements from a local prototype for the extra parts.

The out of the box kit does look slightly basic anyway, as shown in the Peco Catalogue as is, but just proves it could make an interesting model. He did want a table that matched his desired prototype accurately but this is the one he went with.

Does look alright spruced up, may have to get one some day.

Uploaded this video on my Youtube channel of a passing clay train a couple of months back before I finished it

Shows where the Turntable normally lives:

On an additional note Part 2 should come soon with the Turntable back in it's hole! :)
