rockershovel
... It's the prototype for those 009 pugbashes you used to see, with Minitrix Dock Tank chassis under 00 bodies!

Horsetan
So, now have a guess as to how its diesel brethren, the Harzkameln were created? I'm guessing that's derived from the standard gauge V100s. OT, but I can also see how the idea for the Class 17 Claytons came about.
Nearholmer
Yes, 'derived' as in 'converted from'. H0e bogies under an H0 loco. The idea of a centre-cab bogie loco goes back to the early years of electrics, but always seems to come off badly in Britain, because our loading gauge prevents the cab being high enough to permit a view over the bonnets. The Met Camelback electrics, and the Claytons both hit that difficulty. K

runs as required
If we are going for centre cab uglies what about Camelbacks ? Pevsner applied the phrase "the additive plan" to some of the more haphazardly arranged English parish churches he catalogued in his "Buildings of England" Penguin books. For me it aptly describes the US Camelback's random assemblies of wide haystack fireboxes, garden sheds, weird compound cylinder dia. castings, feedwater heaters, plumbing and boiler fittings. It was always claimed that a Le High Valley Camelback regularly ran the ton on the LVR "Black Diamond" New York - Buffalo express before "City of Truro" charged down Stoke Bank with the Ocean Mails. dh
nigelb
Has to be those strange green locos with copper bits on top of the chimneys that used to run in the west of England. and the green ones that used to dripple up the east coast LIMER or something
DavidB-AU
I think we have a new contender! http://i.imgur.com/ojoafI3.jpg Cheers David
RMweb Premium kevinlms Posted July 17, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 17, 2016 and the green ones that used to dripple up the east coast LIMER or something Green locos? How ordinary. Only the Highland Railway of a proper grouped railway, used the colour & that was a different shade to what just about every other green loco railway used. Blue, red & black make excellent alternatives. Match them with a lovely hooter, rather than a high pitched scream!
runs as required
I've just happened upon the ultimate in pursuit of the cult ugly loco! Isn't the little soul cute and comprehendable in every last bolt valve and crank? Must be 1' 113/4" (2' 0") gauge - even in a wet Welsh slate quarry those guys look like they love her. I'd love a Live Steam model of that vertical boiler. dh

Zomboid
I love those things. Not what you might call conventionally beautiful, but they're far from ugly.
