4F/brass etching primer

Recommended Posts

Getting near the end of one of 'Big Jim's' kits bought at York, I'm 'priming' myself to paint it. I already have Halford's grey primer and black top-coat, but wonder whether I need a specific brass-etch primer? If so, and recommendations please?

Thanks,

Hi Richard

Another vote here for U-Pol Acid 8 which I have used with no problems to report, in fact I use this for larger live steam models that go through far tougher lives than our O gauge versions so see no reason for there being a problem as suggested by gwrrob's quote from Halfords. However unlike Coachman I only put a light coat over the surface and then allow it plenty of time to do it's job. In fact my avatar shows a Gresley 8 wheeled high sided tender ( body is all brass) 5" gauge primed in Acid 8 awaiting it's top coats....:)

Regards

Pete

... aagh...

a few mistakes here and there. I'm applying few rusty bits here and there but it all needs to be oversprayed with weathering grime first. I do have a new airbrush with a weedy compressor but the problem is this weather! It's too cold and damp in the garage and my wife won't let me spray in the kitchen...(strange...).

In between waiting for various bits to dry I've just started a point-in-a-bag-kit. Now see what you have started!

I tried ordering the ExactoScale parts you recommended but their phone isn't being answered and the voicemail box is full. I hear the owner is ill. Can anyone confirm this?

Are you going to the Halifax Show?

BTW, in the end I used Phoenix Precision PQ1 grey etch primer.

Hmmm... funny that. Mine won't let me build baseboards in the kitchen either - something to do with sawdust in the bread-bin!

If he is poorly hope he gets better soon. I made up the bridge chairs on my first turnout by chopping up C&L slide chairs (the kit contains plenty). Not quite prototypical and a bit fiddly but only a seriously knowlegeable turnout specialist would notice once painted and weathered.

Bit of a trek from SE Wales I'm afraid and still busy, busy! Bristol will have to be my one show this year I think ;-)

Hi Richard, I can confirm that Len has been ill but I believe that he is on the mend. Like you I tried to place an order by phone and got the same (I was planning to collect at Scalefour North but attendance was cancelled due to the aforementioned illness). Fortunately a friend (a fellow member) has alternate contact methods is collecting for me at a show in May and will post them on.
