Model Rail Limited Editions news

I wrote a lengthy reply to this a couple of days ago, only to have it ditched by the system! Second time around! The choice of limited editions is decided by the editorial team. We take suggestions from readers, and sometimes from manufacturers, discuss them and decide whether want to go ahead or not. A project may get dropped later in the process if we discover a problem with incorrect detail or if the price works out uneconomic. Though it wasn't a 'lemon' the Tinsley 20s twin-pack was a slow mover. It did sell out in the end. We've had one or two items which sold out in only 6 weeks or so, including our first and only Hornby limited edition to date, Mission Impossible.

We're happy to receive suggestions for limited editions based on exsting or forthcoming models but bear in mind that we do put all the ideas through a lot of scrutiny before we decide. We do look for something a bit special, so the 'let's do a grey 37 just because no one has done one for 12 months' type suggestions don't tend to get very far. Also the popular argument - 'I'd buy one, so it must be worth doing' - doesn't get very far if you're likely to be the only person who would buy one!

In some instances, too, the number of limited editions available across the market can be a deterrent. For instance, a couple of years ago we decided not to do a Class 37 because the market was awash with limited edition 37s. As a consequence we actually went 12 months without a limited edition loco. A year later we had three, and two were 37s!

Suggestions can be e-mailed to me at chris.leigh@bauermedia.co.uk

and I'll see that they get to the right people.

22 February - We've just received another pre-pro sample of the Metronet 66 from Bachmann. A much better shade of blue than the previous one. This has been OK'd for production and I understand that latter part of April is the likely delivery date. Advance orders now being taken. See page 72 of the forthcoming issue.

The subscriber discount on all our current limited edition models has been increased to 10%. Subscribers who have placed an advance order for the Metronet Class 66 or the Strathclyde Class 107 will be charged at the lower rate when we receive the models and start debiting cards.

After picking up the N Gauge BP/AVTUR TTA wagons at Glasgow for £20 (for 3)...are there any more at this price?

Any future N Gauge plans on the horizon.?

its more likely to be something with a base mould already on the market such as a 66 or 37 , would be great if it was a 20/3 though but i think the re-tooling would be alot for Model Rail to ask from Bachmann :(

seeing as Model Rail already have a commissioned DRS 47 from Vitrains we can rule that out.

my guesses are its another low emission compass 66 with the new style light clusters like the REX Fastline one.

or a non-wipac 37 in new compass livery such as 667 or maybe Barrow Hill's 409 soon to be in traffic with DRS B)

The note on twitter was posted on 13th April and implies that an agreement has been made, so this was unlikley to have made the press date for this issue.

Seeing the MK2 Network rail coach makes it seem more likley (in my view - unless Chris can tell us otherwise!) that the DRS escort coaches are the models choosen.

or a DRS Blue FNA plus 37/4 or 37/6 to go with it

would Bachmann have the tooling to produce a 37/6 though? The ex-eurostar tractors have alot of Non-standard equipment on them and all differ from one another. Its more likely Bachmann would do a 37/0, 37/4 or 37/5 for Model Rail seeing as the tooling is already on the market B)

The Class 150 in ScotRail purple is fantastic news!

I remember when Hattons had some Dapol Class 150's in a couple of years ago at what I can politely describe as at a "premium price" and got my good friend Bobby Glass to repaint the model into the Purple livery when the transfers were very difficult to get hold of.... at the time when ScotRail/National Express were very protective over their logos- even though they were the ones British Rail branding for ScotRail used pre-1996 just coloured differently! Bobby's repaint was as usual top drawer, shame about the lump the paint sat on.

wide operating area too, the Class 150/2's at Haymarket were most frequent around the Fife Circles and Bathgates- their bread and butter but they also gravitated to Stirling, Perth, Dundee, Cumbernauld, North Berwick and even Glasgow Central via Shotts.

Nice one Model Rail and Harburns!
