DC kits class 501

give it a wash and clean up this morning, then this afternoon when I had the mad house to myself, ive gave it a coat of Halfords primer and the underframes and bogies a coat of Halfords satin black.

just managed to do it while the weather was ok too.

I will give the ends a spray of white primer before I paint the yellow, Ive got neither at the moment.

 

no luck with car paints for the blue so ive ordered phoenix precision spray blue, Ive never liked model railway cans apart from JLTRT, they seem to have the consistency of blamange, but will see how we go.

thanks Dave,

it wont be a finescale model with lots of detail, just a quick build, if it where mine id still be debating on how to scratchbuild underframe detail and other replacement bits such as brass buffers.

the brief was to just build it with what was in the box, ill add a bit of detail but not loads.

 

sprayed the yellow ends this afternoon, I would normally use white primer behind yellow but I didnt have any so just went ahead and sprayed it.

yellow is a funny colour to spray, with grey undercoat it can make it muddy looking and take lots of coats to get to the colour.

 

just took my time on it, I give it a very fine mist twice then leave it for 5 minutes, warming it in between with a hairdryer, until after about an hour or so its covered, if you go to quick itll get to thick and run, when its getting near the final coats i also give it a gentle rub with a soft green kitchen scouring pad to give it a key and remove the orange peel and little bumps that appear.

I didnt mask right to the front corners where the blue will meet but a little back ,so that I can rub the yellow paint lip down on the sides and then go over it with the blue

 

the yellow I used is Halfords ford daytona yellow, Ive never used it on a railway model, i had a few cans left over from something else, I dont know if its an accurate colour to use but it looks ok to me.

 

can be left to harden off now until the blue paint arrives.

mk1 escorts are one of my favourite cars :)

 

still waiting on the blue to arrive, so done a bit more.

 

fitted xerces fobe2's headcode and destination blinds and painted the handrails and bufferbeam black, now its starting to look a bit more like a 501, also fitted pickups to the rear bogie of the power car.

Martin thats superb, tell me more about the lights and front end fittings please.

Most of the detail came from the ‘bits box’ and various bits of plasticard , brass etc. The lights are actually an axle shim spacers etch - spacers are still on etch tabs! As usual once I had finished some better information and pictures became available!?!

There was a unit stored at near Coventry Airport close to the Midlands Air Museum, Rowley Road, it may still be there - it can still be seen on Google Earth.

slightly regretting selling my one now, Xerces fobe2 bought it and is making the battery unit from the kit.

 

I snuck into Kirkdale depot a couple of times to get some detail shots around 1998 which didnt come out too well.

 

this was before the DC kits kit was out. Ian Fisher should remember me trying to get info together to build one,

 

I also remember them as sandites in blue and grey livery, my friends and I in junior school called them ghost trains as we only ever saw the 507/508s and every blue moon we would see one rattle past.

I was planning to do my dc kits merseyrail sandite in blue and grey but the painting of it put me off at the time so it got sold, plus its outside my current era interests.

 

some pics I took of them, thats my dads transit minibus in the background, I think I was around 12/13 when I took these.

this photo came back from spielmanns with a smudge on it.

 

 

only ever got these shots of the sandwiched 73 at Birkenhead centra, we did used to chase them around to see if they where out and about to get shots of them but they where usually tucked away somewhere.

Hi Mike - You could make one by using Bachmann subs and Replica ends- It is quite easy

I think when I come to do mine (way in the future) I will do it all in brass, comet mk1 coach sides, nice thin sides and nice thin roof.

 

 

the dc kits 501, ive corrected the roof vents on one of them which I had the wrong way, wasnt going to but it was bugging me.

can of paint arrived from phoenix precision this morning, so got on it right away and sprayed the blue,

 

it was a little bit glupy coming out the can, but as soon as that happens I warm the body with the hairdrier and leave it for 5 minutes or spray the other coach.

dries really nice and is not thick, I was worried about masking seepage around the yellow but never got any.

problem now is the centre car which is totally out, dont think Ive got enough paint in the little can to do that aswel. will have a think about that.

anyway here it is at the moment.

I couldnt leave the centre car the way it was, the blue was totally wrong and it looked like he had touched it up in areas with a blue felt tip pen! it was constructed with roof last which was evo stuck on so I pulled it off then started to poke out the windows so I could mask them, however I realised I could just leave the glazing in and paint over it using that as a mask, the seats are also stuck tight in.

 

I roughly masked it with cheap masking tape then primered over his paint job, I did have enough blue left in the can, another tip is to warm the can up in a sink of hot water for a few minutes which increases the pressure and helps the spray.

 

result is that it matches perfectley, if i hadnt had primered it it wouldnt have and there is no guarantee the paint would have stuck to the other paint, especially if he had used felt pens on it which are oily, but halfords primer goes over other paint with no bother. I also primered the roof. once the paint is dry ill poke out the glazing, re glaze it properly in each window not just a strip across the whole coach which is what was done, then ill glue the roof back on.

 

the blue looks a bit greener in real life but looks really nice, while the centre coach has been drying ive put the br double arrows on the driving cars which are fox.
