Hi Andy, I’ve found that you are able to amend CV’s on the decoder whilst in Caroline but you cannot read them back hence making a note of the existing CV’s from a reader or slave loco before doing any changes. If you get stuck you can write 4 to CV8 to reset the Lais decoder. I’m rapidly coming round to having to make an additional custom pcb board with a sound decoder/speaker to get everything working correctly and have just horn sounds without any conflict with the loco sound functions. Unfortunately you cannot interrogate a decoder in Caroline as it is in a no load installation ie no motor. I used my ESU Decoder Tester to read and program the 860019 (you could also use a dcc loco as a slave). You can re-write cv’s to the decoder but make sure you know original value’s first so you can revert if needed.

That’s very interesting about the resistance values and also the complexity on the pcb. I had already tried checking the outputs on dc and dcc and had some unstable results. I’m now thinking I may have to make up a pcb to work with my planned direction LED’s indicator display on the NSE version. Thanks for letting us know your findings, it’s certainly given me food for thought!

Thanks for your reply. You are correct about southern region directional lighting. I’m only intending to use a tail lamp on the green version as I believe the screen should ideally be changed from reading an alpha numeric route indicator to red panels when direction is changed, not really practical in 4mm. With the NSE version I’m toying with the idea of bi-colour red/clear LED’s behind a black and white paper panel thus showing white being propelled and red when being towed.

My only physical mod is tape over the loco end contacts on the circuit board. On dcc the direction switch on a controller just changes the head/tail lights over at both ends, sadly they have no independent control that I can find.

Further to my previous post referencing rear red light when Caroline is being pulled. I have changed my setting using F5 (cv 36=64) to cv36=2 which has moved the red light effectively to F0 cv34. The lights now operate correctly just using just the direction control. My reason for this was trying to stop loco sound functions and Caroline light function conflicting. Rear lights F5 on Caroline and loco F5 was a no load situation on the loco which means you have to manually notch up to increase the engine sounds. With the latest settings I’ve set up an Advanced Consist and it works without any issues. I also tried using the same address for both loco and Caroline and that also works well. The only issue is that step lights F3 also gives a short horn blast and tunnel lights F4 gives a long horn blast, not a real concern for me but maybe for some of you. My next challenge is to fit DCC Concepts EOT red lights on the blue/grey and NSE versions, I really need to work out the end contacts on the circuit board. I’ve tried an AVO but didn’t get consistent readings on either dc or dcc. Has anyone worked out what the connections U+ U1+ F R and Q5 actually relate to please? Great fun!

I bought some recently on e—y ( 860019 motor + 4 Function DCC Decoder onboard MTC 21-Pin Plug ) but there are very limited stock around now, must be all these people with a Caroline or 3!

I’m sure that you cannot read or write to the decoder in Caroline as a decoder needs a load ie motor during programming. I did all my programming in a ESU LokProgrammer.

I have been having some 'fun' trying to setting up the lighting CV's on my Carolines! Based on earlier recommendations I tried the Laisdcc 860019 decoders but found that while propelling was OK lighting wise (once CV29 was re-programmed to 7) towing was an issue as the lighting functions are not good. Problem 1 is that red tail lights are set to F2 which unfortunately is non latching on my Prodigy 2 so they only show if you keep F2 pressed! Problem 2 is that red tail lights only work with F0 enabled so front lights next to loco are also on! I have resolved these issues in two ways, I swapped the F1 and F2 function keys over by swapping CV 35 and 36 values (I'm not a lover of internal lighting so no problem for me) so F1 now operates the red tail lights. I sorted the front lighting at the loco end by carefully removing the circuit board in the roof and covering the 5 contacts at the loco end with a strip of Kapton tape = no lighting functions. It's not an ideal situation having to do this on what is after all a very expensive coach. If any others have approached this issue in another way please let us all know.

The ‘what could have been’ BR liveried pair have received my EOI - brilliant! Definitely need some 04’s with skirts if / when they are produced. As a 5 year old I can definitely remember the sights and sounds of the W&U, imagine if the line had lasted long enough to be preserved.
