Guest jim s-w
Hi All As there is a fair bit of interest in model road vehicles I thought I'd keep them away from my normal layout thread. Guest jim s-w
My good old WH Smiths ford cargo has been photographed to death. However the combination of the Corgi Cab and the chassis off a Base toys Leyland FG is an easy one and results in decent looking little models. Last night I bunged a couple more together using the FG flat bed (adapted a bit) to represent a scaffold gangers lorry and the sides form the old Hornby curtain sided van as a base for a curtain sided box body. The cabs are not secured in place yet and thus a tad wobbly! Cheers Jim
(The) Youth
Jim where do you get your cabs from ???

Lukasz
Nice one Jim. Will this be a thread where you post and we gape in amazement. Or can we hijack this thread ith our own measly attempts. First post on the new forum. How are you Jim? Lukasz
SRman
? I'm glad you have restarted this topic, Jim. ? :icon_thumbsup2: I have done one such Ford Cargo conversion, using Herpa wheels to replace the Corgi ones. With a few paint touches they come up rather well. If you check out PCM's Llanbourne layout threads, he converted at least one of the Fords into a BR crew bus - it was he who gave me the idea for using the Corgi Cargo, and he who actually located one for me at a swap meet! ? ? Guest jim s-w
Hiya I was planning to just post stuff for new street here. Perhaps I should start a seperate road vehicles thread for everyone, similar to the scratchbuilt buildings thread? Cheers Jim
37114
The cargo's look good Jim and the smaller Base toys wheels look spot on for 7.5t. The curtainsider is a neat idea although the rear overhang looks a little on the long side, Not sure how easy it is to fix though.
Guest jim s-w
Hi Rob Nothing a razor saw and a spot of liquid poly cant fix! (actually nothing it couldn't fix as the chop has just been done! Cheers Jim
Guest jim s-w
Hi All For anyone interested in run of the mill, late 80's lorries you can do a lot worse than look here! That Sunblest Cargo is well high on my to-do list! HTH Jim
Guest jim s-w
Hi All Back to my lorries. I have been producing a little pile of bodies while I stock pile cabs from left to right back row refrigerated box (short WB large wheels), destined for Kraft livery and a Cargo cab. The refrigerator is adapted from a Unit models air conditioner. Another box body (long WB small wheels) destined for another Cargo cab, this one will be in Sunblest livery Box (long WB large wheels) destined for a MAN cab and BRS livery Curtain sider, this one will be a generic. plain livery front row Flatbed destined for a Matchbox Dodge cab Another flatbed which as can be seen is going to be in Jewson colours. RMweb Premium Gary White Posted January 7, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 7, 2010 Thanks Jim I have also been building some scratch built vehicles for my layout i do think the right vehicles in the right time zone I 1980s 1990s etc make a layout more realistic. I have mixed and matched cabs and chassis from road transport images base toys and they have came out well also working on a late 1980s BR crew bus with leyland terrier chassis. I wish some one would make a proper model of one of these. Cheers Gary
BernardTPM
The only part of the Matchbox Dodge (Commando) cab that is any good is the front panel. The rest is quite out of proportion. A shame as the front panel itself is quite nice, if a bit flat (easily cured with a hammer!).
RANGERS
Frank Waller (Road Transport Images) does an excellent Dodge cab, the later version or the early version to order, much better than the Matchbox one. He also does the Leyland G cab in versions suitable for the Terrier and the bigger Boxer/ Mastiff and Clydesdale. There's no Cargo in the range but there's early and late D Series to order. RANGERS
Thats Great I need some terriers off him anyway! This is the vehicle I am basing the Dodge on click here Cheers Jim That's the later cab with the square grille, that's in the current list. The earlier one is available to order
Guest jim s-w
Great, thanks for clarifying. A bit more progress to report today MAN version in various stages. The one on the far right is standard Corgi. Not sure what to do with this one yet. Cargo's, quite fond of the Jewson one! Cheers Jim
BernardTPM
That's the first proper facelift; there was another one after that with a Renault badge. Those go to about 'F' reg. The differences between the original 1974 Commer Commando and the pre-facelift Dodge version (like the Matchbox) are quite small.
Guest jim s-w
Thanks for the info chaps. The one in the pic is the renault badged version. Cheers Jim
BernardTPM
The one in the pic is the renault badged version. That's not quite the one I meant as it still has the Dodge name on and the 'square' grille. The very late ones were neater and only had Renault markings. I've got a photo on a slide, but I don't have a slide scanner, unfortunately.
Merfyn Jones
That's not quite the one I meant as it still has the Dodge name on and the 'square' grille. The very late ones were neater and only had Renault markings. I've got a photo on a slide, but I don't have a slide scanner, unfortunately. This is the one you mean Bernard, the last styling update, after the Dodge lettering dropped. Used on E, F & G reg. to the end of production. The black plastic grill was a cover up for the flat steel front that always went rusty on the earlier model. Merfyn.
BernardTPM
That's the one, Merfyn; almost as neat as the original, though they never bothered to fill in the seam just above the recessed band. I thought the earlier update looked a bit out of character with the cab.
37114
That Jewson Cargo is turning out nicely Jim, like the MAN's as well, the corgi cab seems spot on.
