I thought the oxford Capri and escort would look better with TPM wheels. The photoshop mockup convinced me to get an order in to Bernard so that I could try it out for real. Happily while the oxford cars use axles the TPM wheels dont and have a triangular back to them. The way Oxford have mounted the wheels means the new ones can be just glued in place.

That's pretty much how I did the Oxford Mk.3 Cortina, though I needed to chop some of the plastic away to get it to sit at the correct scale height (4' 4" = 17.33...mm)

Hi All

 

A request for info. Does anyone have info on the EH smiths lorries? The depot is only down the road and when i was little there was a chap in my road who drove for them. His truck was parked within yards of my house every day and yet...

 

I think it was ERF and it was definately an 8 legger with wooden drop sides. Unfortunately the chap, Eric, died a good few years ago now.

Is this EH Smith the builders merchants?

 

If it is, I seem to remember them with B and C Series ERFs, Seddon-Atkinsons and I think Bedfords in the eighties and early nineties. I guess the eight leggers would have been for heavy deliveries, bricks and the like and would probably have had a Hiab type crane on board.

 

I can't recall anything as big as that, 4 and maybe six wheelers were the one's I can vaguely remember from my time working in Leicester up to 1990.

Hi All

 

A couple of WMT liviered Buses.

These 2 are from the smaller WMT fleets around the time of the layout. On the left one of the prototype Gardner engined Leyland Lynx. The Lynx would go on to become the standard single deck bus of the WMT fleet.

 

On the right one of the small fleet of short Mk2 Leland nationals. I used the EFE front which I now realise is too flat so this model will be relegated towards the back of the layout.

As mentioned earlier in the thread - Work in progress on a Volvo Ailsa in the earlier livery of the period. Most carried a version of the Metrobus livery with much more blue! A pretty much standard out of the box model but the top and bottom halves have been glued together and filled to remove the very prominent line that separates the parts.

You might very well be right. The guys at EH Smiths have been very helpful in digging out info for me - Not seen it yet but they tell me thay have scanned some stuff for me!

 

Anyhow - assuming I am wrong about the eight leggers a very rough mock up to give an idea of what I have in mind.

Hi all

 

When Bernard send me a selection of bits a while ago he advised that the more modern Merc was 3mm too wide (which in something this size is a lot!) So out with the hacksaw B)

I cut the radiator out on its own and then cut the van straight down the middle, A fair way to go on this one! Wheels from Paragon Models again.

Hi All

 

A while ago there was a discussion about the Dodge Commer and mention made that the EFSI one is 4mm scale. So, suitably inspired I tracked one down and have produced this!

Along with the obligatory wheel swap I filed off the read wheel arches and repositioned them lower down. I also changed the radiator and bonnet to represent a Diesel engined version. I wanted to try out an idea I had to reproduce the effect you get when old lettering is removed after a long time. So I printed out a logo in a very slightly darker red on transfer paper and then applied it to the model AFTER i had weathered it. Quite pleased with the result!

Hi All

 

The kind man at EH smiths has provided me with a nigh on perfect picture of an E reg Lorry in their yard at Shirley. Its a 2 axle one with a newer ERF cab than the one in my mock up and metal sides - very much like a grampus. It also has a Hi-ab as Rangers said.

 

The cab is the same as the first orange one you come to on the ERF site see here

That's the E series, Jim, developed from the B and sharing much of the front panelwork, but with the extra window behind, making the cab longer.

 

The E series did look very similar to the C, which shared the same cab as the previous B, but I doubt there was much if any commonality of panels between them. The position of the hinge for the cab tilt was higher up on the E, hence the split in the grille. Not sure why this was but the engine range on the E offered Cummins C series options so that may have been a factor.

Hi All

 

(this was posted on the old forum but I am reposting it here as its an ongoing project.)

 

What I do need (a lot of) are the Birmingham Fleetlines.

 

With nothing available RTP I am left with 2 options, convert something or build kits.

On the left a Shell from a britbus Atlantean that is very close to a Fleetline and on the right the Paragon models kit for one. As I can pick up the Atleanteans for about a fiver (on ebay - be patient!) each I am going to go down this route. The Paragon models bus is a bit (for want of a better word) scruffy and looks to be as much work as converting the diecast one anyway but at nearly ??30 is too expensive for the numbers I need.

Early stages - the main thing is to make an extra window on the drivers side behind the stairs. luckily a friend with a milling machine has kindly offered to to the main fleet when I get round to them. The 2 halves have been glued together and the front filled. I am working on an etch for the parts I need.

Hi Jim. I have been watching your threads for a while now and I must say i'm impressed with your work and commitment in relation to your project.

I would like to ask, if I may, in relation to your Bedford TK model posted on the 8th of Feb about the door mirrors. I am working on a TK crewbus that I picked up at the Stafford show. Are the mirrors scratch built or are they an etch that is available? I feel that they are a necessary requirement even at the 1 metre viewing rule.

Please note these are very fragile and I am afraid (as I sell them at cost) that I cant replace them if they get damaged in the post. I havent had this happen yet but I think its important that you know this before you order any.

Hi Jim,

I'm more than a bit impressed with your green T45 in the last pic, is this made using Base Models one as a starting point?

Its a combination of Base toys cab and wheels with a Knightwing Chassis and tippler. I originally wanted to do this is Tarmac colours but I couldn't get transfers so I switched it to ARC livery as I could print my own.

Some of my Corgi lorries have now received a light coating of grime. Aside from the wing mirrors (I've run out) these 3 are done.
