Unless that W1 had actually been run over it was repairable, which is one of the skills I'd always thought modelling was meant to be about acquiring? Not that I don't have plenty of them, but buying brand new RTR locos hasn't made me any more of a modeller, than buying a ready meal lasagna made me a chef. There are one or two threads on RMWeb that I no longer follow as otherwise, I was eventually going to say something very rude. They seemed to mostly be one or two individuals, apparently with little better to do with their lives, laughing and pointing via their keyboards at things they'd found on eBay, considered old and overpriced tat only fit for the skip. One regular poster almost always rejected anything RTR made in the 20th century as complete rubbish which should be replaced with the latest items by any serious modeller, apparently. If they could afford to do that with my collection of 1970s-1990s RTR and are suggesting I should, they must be a merchant banker (see what I did there?). I have a Lima 45xx, which at about aged 12 I decided that I didn't want in GWR green, so hand painted it (rather well actually) in gloss black and added some spare BR emblems from an old Airfix kit. Just recently I got it out of the box and decided it really need finishing after over 35 years, so at Expo EM the other week I acquired correct sized sets of Gibson pony wheels and axles. Along with some correct Modelmaster emblems and scale (sprung) buffers already in the spare parts box, it might just leapfrog a few things on the to-do list. Those old models of mine are cherished, no masterpieces even in their day but they're MINE. Hear hear again - I couldn't agree more. On the same theme here's my very first loco., a Triang-Hornby pannier, with a Comet Chassis and lots of new bits. At the end of the day I could buy better from Bachman (though not in EM to be fair!) but the level of satisfaction it provided would be zero. To be honest I didn't need a pannier tank particularly but I found that old loco. in a box and wanted to do something with it. 25 5 1
Popular Post Tony Wright
Mo and I spent a wonderful weekend at The 2mm Scale Association's Diamond Jubilee Exhibition at the Derby Conference Centre. It was my privilege to be invited as after-dinner speaker. I don't know if I was entirely on my best form, but Mo and I attended my younger brother's funeral yesterday, and different thoughts were present. Anyway, I took the opportunity to grab some pictures............ Coal Road by Rod McCall. Copenhagen Fields from the MRC. Evercreech Junction by Alan Smith and Keith Gloster. Ivybridge by John Aldrick. Llangerisech by Nigel Ashton. Moretonhamstead by Pete Warren. And Padstow and Wadebridge by John Greenwood. I wasn't able to take pictures of every layout, but there were some absolute beauties. May I please thank all the Association members for putting on such a great show? 16

Please accept our sincerest condolences. Thanks Simon, And all who've responded. It was very sudden (and unexpected); a massive heart attack. Being close in age (he born in '47, me in '46), we were both lifelong friends and mortal enemies (such is sibling rivalry), but did most things together, trainspotting being our principal hobby as boys. We also built train sets together. He kept the original stuff, after I took railway modelling 'more seriously'. He leaves a wonderful, extended family. Regards, Tony. Popular Post Tony Wright
Many, many thanks for all the expressions of condolence. Martin wasn't known in railway circles (though he was an avid trainspotter as a boy) and didn't carry on in the model railway hobby as I did when he grew up (something I've never done). Unlike me, he was fearless (always in fights, often against far bigger boys), though we both shared the ability to 'upset' folk on a regular basis. He's been mentioned in books/articles I've written; stories about our trainspotting escapades. His funeral was, in fact, a celebration of his life, with rock music being played among the eulogies, and, thankfully, no superstitions (I don't mean to offend anyone by my saying this, but it was definitely not his style - nor mine!). RMweb Premium TrevorP1 Posted June 21, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 21, 2022 Sad times Tony. I remember you telling me Martin was our local town clerk. Two brothers, a town clerk and a teacher, something to make your parents proud I feel. As for upsetting folk, there are a lot in this world who deserve upsetting. More power to folk like you! 1 6

As it should be. I attended a funeral last week that started with Paul Robeson and ended with Louis Armstrong. The chap was over a 100 so they were quite topical for him. He was from a generation of farmers. The family drove the largest most modern tractor that I have ever seen down to the village. After the service the young kids had a great time climbing on it. A day out for all to remember. Bernard

Popular Post Tony Wright
Thanks once again for all the messages of condolence. They are appreciated, and it shows what a caring community RMweb is. Things are slowly 'getting back to normal', inasmuch as I've got guests visiting again. Today, it was Geoff Cook from Rugby (another ex-teacher). He brought with him some delightful GNR/pre-Grouping items; including........... Some assorted scratch-built/kit-built wagons. Two scratch-built bogie brick wagons. A Craftsman C12 and scratch-built vehicles. A scratch-built ECJS twelve-wheeler. A scratch-built Howlden six-wheeler. And a Little Engines N1 and further scratch-built stock. Thanks for bringing these, Geoff. How nice to see some excellent examples of personal, 'proper' modelling. 42 9

Popular Post Ian Smith
My latest build came off my workbench about a week ago : It's a GWR 70'0" Steam Rail Motor to Diagram O finished as built in March 1906 condition. The body (sides and ends) are Worsley Works (scratch aid "kit"), the rest is scratch built (the kit represents the preserved No. 93 of Diagram R (of 1908) so I've subtly amended the etches to model the earlier diagram. Livery applied by me including the transfers for the "prize monogram" that some of these carried when out-shopped late 1905/early 1906. Oh, by the way it's 2mm Finescale. Thanks for looking. Hello Tony, may I add my condolences for your brother's loss? These things are never easy, hope the modelling is keeping your mind off things. I wondered if you happened to have taken any more photos of that excellent looking pair of GN Sleeper wagons and if so, you might post them on here please? Or, to Geoff Cook, if you're reading this, would you perhaps add some photos? Reason being I intend modelling one but have had some difficulty finding photos. Also, it looks on my conputer screen as if they're in GNR freight brown - is that what they are? I read that by LNER days, sleeper wagons were always grey, even though other Engineering / Departmental stock was Oxford blue. Did the GNR not use a separate Engineering / Departmental livery?
