I quite enjoyed it - especially the head-on shot of the "new" Gazelle train rockin' & rollin' on the uneven track :O

I couldn't quite understand if the older, northern line was being retained for some occasional use, or just abandoned. If the latter, it seemed strange not to recover the track as it seemed to be in good conditon in places (unless these were cases of poor continuity showing other sections of track!).

Looking forward to next week's episode on Australia :)

I used to listen to Chris Tarrant on Capital radio when I used to drive to work. Like his sense of humou,r so its good to see him in this series.

The Congo railway would make a great model.

Look forward to the Australian one next week having travelled on that route.

Certainly an eye opener!! Loved the electrical connection between the loco and the coaches - no plug just twist the wires together and a bit of insulation tape!!

Had to do that to the LT lead on my Mark 2 Escort many years ago, ran perfectly like that till the day I sold it ;)

As for the program itself, hugely more enjoyable than the one Portillo runis on a weekly basis. Look froward to the rest, just a shame there are only 3 episodes

The cable connection method in Ep 1 is also used in India on the DHR between loco and coaches.

The Oz one tonight was good as well.

Looking forward to India as I have done a few thousand miles in the country. Such fun.

Thoroughly enjoying the programmes. Congo Republic railway look highly modellable. Now where can I get the right Chinese loco and Korean coaches?!

What amazed me was the dedication of the staff to keep things going with little investment money available. The 'railway family' has much the same commitment the world over.

The wonderful dereliction of the remnants of the old Ghan line was amazing. I always find a fascination with suddenly abandoned locations.

I travelled on the new Ghan but only to Alice Springs back in the 90's - was a boring uncomfortable trip. To eat, you had to take food from the buffet back to your seat which did not have a fold down tables. Beer on the other hand had to be drunk in the buffet as it was not allowed at your seat. Drinking hours were also very limited.

I suspect hat if we had gone in the sleeper section as per the Indian Pacific then we would have found the trip much better.

Back to last nights programme - it was very interesting to see the remants of the old Ghan as I remember one of the Great Railway Journeys progammes on this before it closed.
