steve fay
Well a layout has to start somewhere, here’s the initial design for the woodhead route diorama, I’m going to lay the track diagonally on this one for a change as I think it will give some fantastic views both side on and head on. The locos that will be displayed here have been documented on Nick Dunhills build thread. If we can we are going to go with a 5’ X 3’ baseboard so there’s plenty of scenery around the track work which will be great for photography. It will also eventually be featured in Hornby magazine. I’m just awaiting a few 3D printed bits to complete box tunnel and then we will be underway.

steve fay
Day one on Grimsby loco shed, Nice simple design for displaying a wonderful collection of GCR stock from the grouping period. Also day one on Beattystone ( woodhead ) board completed and the polystyrene cut in.
steve fay
As the sun was out yesterday I took the opportunity to get some backing plaster on the polystyrene after it had a liberal coating of builders grade PVA Sand down on the river bed. Lots of ordered placed so it’s just awaiting deliveries now
steve fay
After the construction of Beattystone and Grimsby I had a 3’ x1’ length of 9mm ply left over, eureka I thought, that will make a nice little loco display. Low relief coal stage two lines some pits water crane etc, so an hour or so with the saw this afternoon and we have a showcase. This will be a nice little home display and something easily transportable for local shows. Pop two fiddle yards either side to drive a loco on and off scene and hey presto!

I live a few miles from this portal (and less than 1.5m from the other end) so am looking forward to seeing this completed. Out of interest is the portal available from Intentio please? One of the pubs above the Tunnel has this as their fire place, there are a few like this around here.
steve fay
I believe it will be available from Intentio, in 7mm and if enough interest in 4mm

steve fay
The last of the polystyrene cut in place and the tunnel opening cut out. This is removable for track laying and once the ballast is down it can be permanently fixed and covered in rocks.
steve fay
I’ve made up some walls for above the tunnel mouth as there was stone walls above Woodhead tunnel, scribed foam board and Foam board / slaters stone combo’s
steve fay
Casting a few more rocks today, great tip if your base scenery is polystyrene add a few screws into the plaster before it sets, it helps with placement and once glued adds an additional anchor point
steve fay
As if I’m not busy enough I’m going to introduce a new project into the list, Dainton Bank tunnel mouth. I carved the tunnel mouth back last year and Inspired by Box and Beattystone I think I’ll make this one it to a full diorama of its own. I’m hoping to keep it 5’ x 3’. I still have some track work left over from Ranelagh bridge that can be cannibalised and repurposed on to this project. Once it’s done it will be available for sale! So if you have always fancied a piece of the notorious south Devon banks to display a King or Castle this one might just be for you.

RMweb Premium Hal Nail Posted April 22, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 22, 2023 I've often thought just the sidings part could make quite an interesting mini layout, viewed from across the falling grade at the front.
RMweb Gold Dan Randall Posted April 22, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 22, 2023 Cuneo’s tunnel mouth looks a bit snug, like it’s a just single bore. Great painting though! 😄 Regards Dan
