Cowans Sheldon 75 Tonne Telescopic Breakdown Crane ADRC 96713 Scratchbuild - First run

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Thanks for all the comments everyone. Came to a grinding halt with the build as I ran out of Plastic Weld, fortunately, my local model shop in Northwich had plenty in stock when I was able to call in.

With the majority of the main structural work complete, I have started to work on some of the detail. I have recently added the side doors to the equipment case on the crane along with a slot for the sight glass (fuel gauge?).

Also started to add detail for the running gear, some of the dampers have been added.

Evening everyone,

A bit more detail been added tonight, slow process but I am enjoying it which is the main thing! The hand wheels are not strictly correct, I have used some 51L ones which I had in, however will try and source some more suitable ones.

When my mate Paul built the one for farkham all the trunking on the sole bar was made up of brass wire, since I found a lot hobby and art shops sell copper wire on a roll which is easier to use, wonder if that would come in handy wire get that stage

Look really smart nice see another one being built

Hi Simon, I look forward to seeing the crane and breakdown train finished. Your crane is really coming together now, I can see why you are enjoying this project. Any chance you could make one for my depot?!!!

Oh a 7mm Grid, lovely! What livery are you planning to model her in? Large Logo?

That crane is looking really good Simon!    I have been watching with interest as it has literally risen from the cutting mat.

All the best,

Colin

Hi Colin,

Thanks for your comments, although I have not posted much prior to January, I have watched your EMU builds and they are superb, and will be watching your 4 COR build closely.

Cheers

Hi Roomey,

Thanks for your comments,I have seen the crane on Farkham and it is superb, its the model which made me decide to make a start on my own. Yes got some of the copper wire you refer to and it is easier to use, going to look at using it to form the primary springs for the suspension wrapped around plastic rod.

Hi Grimely,

Thanks for the comments, I am planning to build a few more at some point, may even do the Network Rail version (basically redesigned cab and a few other mods). The 7mm Grid is part built in my garage and I really must finish it, I was thinking of doing it as 56093 Large Logo Blue with white window surrounds and weathered, but then thought about 56099 Fidlers Ferry, by the time its finished it may end up in Original Railfreight Grey.

Cheers

Hi Simon,

Nice choice of 093, I remember seeing it pass through Doncaster light engine in February 1988. It must have been on a driver training run as both cabs were packed full of BR staff! If I recall correctly it had a dent at one end?

I like the way you say that you plan to build a few more cranes. You really must enjoy scratch building cranes!

Having not studied cranes and breakdown trains, did BR depots all have the same or similar cranes?

Hi Grimley,

Yes your right, 56093 did have a dent in one end, I was going to model it without the dent, however like I say, my decision on livery will probably change right upto the point of applying primer.

There were only 6 of these telescopic jib cranes built for BR around 1977. The rest of the depots had various types of fixed jib cranes.

I am planning at somepoint on starting a twin jib P-Way crane aswell. Something like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/banburybob/8137641584/ but in a propery livery..... BR Yellow

Hi everyone,

Just a small update. As I had decided to base the crane on a small diorama, with the outriggers deployed, I have made a start on adding the detail to these. When the crane is coupled up to its runners, this detail cannot be seen.

There are still a few items to add to the left outrigger and the right one needs to be started. This needs to be repeated at the other end of the crane aswell.

Hi Grimley,

I am thinking along the lines of something like this to be honest.

However this did cross my mind, class 40 engine repairs

Derailed HAA's? This would be good to do, need abit of space and alot of broken HAA's and some OHL

All photos from the Wigan World website, railways section and all above at Springs Branch.

Simon. I had a spreader beam made by a company that specialises in model crane stuff if you're interested. great quality.

Hi Richard,

Is that the beam which sits on one of  the runner wagons? I have made a couple up already, although I only need the one for the moment, the second one can be used on the next crane. Thanks for the offer though!

Out of interest, what is the company you refer to for the crane stuff?

Hi everyone,

Small update again, due to other commitments progress is still slower than I would like, however, managed to complete the majority of the L/H & R/H outrigger and also fit the auxillary winch, this is the grey drum at the front of the crane body. This is a modified part again from the Dapol 15 tone crane kit.

Once outriggers are complete, need to look at making the axlebox and suspension parts.

Evening all,

Tonights progress, made a start on the running gear for the crane. The chassis is effectively made up using Bill Bedford Pedestal suspension units. The centre 2 are soldered to some 20 thou brass sheet, the outer axles are mounted on studs to premit movement for curves. Although its planned for a diorama, its better to do this now rather than trying to modify it latter, if I changed my mind.

Also started on the primary springs which sit either side of the axle box. These are made from evergreen rod and copper wire. Only 30 more to do!
