RMweb Gold Popular Post Worsdell forever Posted July 17, 2018 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted July 17, 2018 Hi Paul, you certainly know how to paint up a bufferstop, how's about a write up for all those people that don't. Like me. Dave Franks. He of the bufferstops. Found it, the following appeared in the EMGS newsletter a couple of years ago. Anyone who has built one of Mr Franks new range of buffer stop kits will know how good they are and I'm not going to go into how to build them here – Dave's instructions are clear and they are quite straight forward anyway – what I am going to try and show is how I created the rusted effect on the NER stopblocks (to give them their North Eastern title) for Greyscroft Mine. The buffer stop built up on one section of C&L EM track base, this happens to be just the right length, two chairs have been removed from each side. After cleaning it was sprayed with grey primer from an aerosol. When the primer was completely dry the whole lot was sprayed with a coat of Vallejo 'Orange Brown' acrylic as a base rust colour. When the rust colour was dry the sleepers and beam were brush painted with Railmatch acrylic 'Sleeper Grime' and the faded white on the beam drybrushed on, this could also be red depending on company and period. The final stage is a rough, almost splattered coat of browny black, I used a 60/40 mix of Vallejo 'Black' and 'Chocolate Brown' thinned just enough so it will go through the airbrush so creating a fine dappled effect rather than a smooth coat. I have found that it is all too easy to get too fine a finish and the rust and final stages have to be repeated a couple of times until the desired effect is reached. Another set seen fitted in the goods yard on Greyscroft Mine I think showing the effect well, the rust on bufferstops tends to get a bit rough and flakey compared to running lines where the constant movement from passing trains keeps them a lot smoother and even in colour. This shows the cast bracket type treated the same way although there is quite a lot more wood to paint and being in the mine yard I haven't painted the iron plate on the beam, these are free standing and don't need mounting on a sleeper base.
