Am I wrong to want to brush paint my brass locos?

That is an excellent result. If I could brush paint that well then I would not even bother with an air brush.

By the way, I use a cheap $15 single action air brush from  China and it gives good results ; you can find them on ebay.  Your only real expense is the compressor but there are now some very cheap models around which work quite well. Some of them are designed for air brushing fingernails.

I( would suggest spraying the brass with Halfords Grey Primer this will give a much better surface to pint onto, than direct onto brass

I would suggest that, rather than Halfords grey primer, you use an etch primer for brass. I paint my locos with brushes but spray them with etch primer from  can first. Halfords may do an etch primer but I buy mine from my local car parts shop and I've no idea what make it is.
