Indomitable026
Out of interest D, why have you gone for putting in the curved switch next? The majority of the articles I've read do the curved stockrail next. Always work outwards, If you work inwards you can be in danger of running out of space You have to put a kink in that curve stock rail, you can derive it but putting it next to straight stock rail and its adjacent curved switch. I see Geoff disagrees, but like I say its not the definitive, its just my view and method on things. We all have different methods an have to use what suits. You can now gauge the stock rail from the curve switch, the crossing and straight stock rail as below Straight switch next

RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted August 31, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 31, 2013 Are you using ordinary MEK ? I find it a bit weak for C&L chairs and use Plastic Weld, but then I am gluing them to ply sleepers.
Indomitable026
Are you using ordinary MEK ? I find it a bit weak for C&L chairs and use Plastic Weld, but then I am gluing them to ply sleepers. The chair I had to take off, that I'd got the wrong way round, was well seated. So all ok. Prior to installing the straight switch the dropper needs soldering on And then the same again, positioned and clamped to achieve correct position. The roll of solder is placed to unsure the switch blade does not protrude above the stock rail height. It will be sat on the slide chairs so should end up the correct height. I'm wavering now, there's talk of Doombar on my other thread.....

Indomitable026
I didn't disagree, I agreed to what it stated in most books on pointwork Oh ok. Well this is as far as I'm getting today (bearing in mind I'm meant to be working on DitD) Only check rails, cosmetic half chairs and ties bars remain. I have to say this has been far easier than the EM gauge stuff I've been building and this is S7 ! Very impressed.
RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted August 31, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 31, 2013 I didn't disagree, I agreed to what it stated in most books on pointwork So, in novice speak, what are the pros and cons for the method used in most books? I'm interested as I've my own 7mm point kit to build (and it keeps saying 'build me, build me').

Well I'd say follow what I've just done, but I would The key thing is to get started, if it's wrong try again. I've shown that on the DitD point. The worst thing is to be afraid of trying - surely. It won't bite you...... Hopefully Geoff will give his view on how he constructs....

RMweb Gold bcnPete Posted September 1, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 1, 2013 7mm from 2mm? Wow ! 4mm is so over Speaking with others there seem to be a lot of peeps who dabble in both 2mm and 7mm...the chance to zoom in and zoom out as suits one's mood I guess! Can't make up my mind whether to build my turnout insitu or to undertake as a separate exercise as per above - I guess doing the latter means it's a self contained project which can come together quite quickly...and lessons learnt are minimised perhaps? Yeah, that's definitely a zoom out - zoom in. I get it, the ability to run long trains and then switch to model super detail! I'd build separate (oh I have done!). When this point is cut free it will give access to the underneath. All wiring will be pre-soldered to the bottom of the rails and the tie bar/ bars will be installed from below as well.
the penguin of doom
Hi Damian. Just found this thread and it's an interesting and inspirational read. My local club are building a small O gauge Highlands based layout and guess who got the job of detailing/converting the McRats? I was also at the KWVR gala this year, (our paths must have crossed), and given my impending work, I took plenty of detail shots of 26 038. I hope you'll forgive me for posting this link, I'm not sure if you've seen it already..... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/71494-class-26-detail-photographs/ Here also is a quick picture of work so far on my 27 which is converted from a Heljan class 33. Again, apologies if you've seen it already..... I have a few more pictures of the 26 so once you're on with your stock, if you, (or anyone else), needs anything specific, let me know. Apologies for the minor hijacking. Cheers. Sean.

Yes the gala was great and I imagine our paths crossed especially if you were anywhere near the bar car! I'm interested in what you're doing, do you have a thread? I'll look at the reference material later as I'm still engaged in wiring on DitD, I appreciate the link. Oh, and why Penguin of Doom?
the penguin of doom
Thanks Damian. I'll try and address each question you posed, important ones first. Yup, spent quite a bit of time in the bar car. I seem to remember it was Timothy Taylors that hit the spot on that day, but could be mistaken. I was there on the day 26 038 was named, the Sunday I think. I tend to show off what I'm doing on my workbench thread, link here..... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/28223-the-penguins-workbench-theres-a-mcrat-in-my-kitchen/page-55 The Highland stuff probably starts around page 45, prior to that, its tinkering with OO stuff interspersed with banter. I've also done a MK2 from a Triang Big train coach which might be of interest..... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/71345-tri-ang-big-big-train-mkii-cut-and-shut/ As for "The Penguin Of Doom", I just read it somewhere in the dim and distant past and it made me proper belly laugh so I used it on here. It was either that or "Tonto's Expanding Headband" for the same reasons. I saw DitD a year or so back, possibly at Warley, mighty fine layout you have there. I spent a good hour just watching the, (4mm), world go by. The standard of the whole layout and stock was superb. Cheers. Sean.

We must have ' virtually bumped' into each other then, I also was there for the naming as it delayed the services there-after. Thanks for the compliment on 'Diesels' I'm intrigued to see what can be achieved in this larger scale and where this S7 journey will take us. At present the plan is a representation of Lochgorm Works at Inverness. Gun slinging wild card Jonnie Gringo has agreed to do some concept sketches. A tough job as its needs a lot of space but I want to limit that maybe to the size of Diesels? It may be a tall order but would allow re-use of legs, lights etc.... We shall see.....

You noted that you installed the dropper to the straight switch but how do you then insert that 'through' your piece of glass...or am I missing something?... I've attached a sketch on what i think my plan is. Untitled_2013101409220000.pdf Its a copper clad strip on its side with tubes soldered in to receive droppers. It sits above the board and is fed from below by Tortoise/ Cobolt motor. So the droppers from the switch don't go through the board It may work.......it may not, i may need two But thats why i'm building a prototype to shake down these issues
