Definitely an improvement on my 6 inch nail and lump hammer technique! Whats the betting on someone re-inventing it for a certain magazine in a few years time? Now! A question! I've been playing with a small war memorial for my Scottish branch layout and I'm just about ready to paint it. What I'd like to do is represent marble but I haven't a clue how to do it! I can handle teak on a wood-bodied coach without too many problems but marble........ All (non-rude) suggestions welcome! I know how to make marble colums - screw up black paper, unfold, dry brush the creases in white, when dry Iron out flat, glue round the column (Check out my cathedral interior ) but as for representing it on a figure I really have no idea but I bet a war gamer has, these guys can do wonders when it comes to painting figures. So I'm sorry Bill, other than spraying it in Spackle Paint, I just can't help. Cheers. Allan

Regards Bill Most war memorials are in white stone, often Portland, rarely actually in 'marble', apart from some plaques which are usually those affixed to WW1 memorials naming locals lost in WW2. I suggest a matt dull off-white, weathered as appropriate to your period.
Mythocentric
Hi Allan No problem bud! Problem is I learned most of my model painting techniques from war gamers and marble is something I've never come across before. Actually your mention of Spackle Paint has given me an idea. It strikes me that I could apply a suitable base coat (off white as Adams442T suggested) then use the spatter nozzle (great for representing lichen and moss) on my Aztec to apply a fine spray and use a soft brush to blend it slightly before the paint dries. I'll have a play with it and see what happens. Just don't ask how many war memorials I get through! See! You did provide the inspiration after all! allan downes
Try it out first Bill on a scrap piece of whatever, NOT your war memorial ! Cheers mate. Allan.

Regards Bill Bill, I remembetr a technique a friend of mine used to use which sounds similar - base coat followed by a light splatter of paint (he didn't have an air brush) and then run a feather over it whilst the splattered paint's still wet. Was quite effective from what I remember.

They might be in the rear, or , horror of horrors, efficient electrickery lighting may have been fitted, rendering the windows obsolete. A door might be useful, though. Mythocentric
I'm a bit worried about the signalman! Look at the size of him! Looks like the GWR built them to last - just like their boxes! Regards Bill
allan downes
Apart from the signalman, there's something not quite right about this box. To start with I ordered the wrong sized boarding - too wide - and even the framework is too wide also - but I will finish it and hope it improves when the roof's fitted along with everything else and if it doesn't ? well it will just go to show that one, no matter how long in the game and the tooth, dose'nt always get it right ! Anyway, my porridge's getting cold.... Cheers. Allan.
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted June 16, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 16, 2014 The windows don't appear to be able to be opened either - shouldn't they slide behind each other ?
allan downes
The windows don't appear to be able to be opened either - shouldn't they slide behind each other ? Of course you're right Stubby, they should slide but that's super modelling and I don't do do super modelling - fast, rough and ready yes, but not super !! Anyway, here it is finished though I might build a coal bunker for it later when I'm in coal bunker mode but meanwhile, another look at Tetbury goods shed. And stick the stove pipe on that I forgot all about. Cheers Mate. Allan.
allan downes
TETBURY GOODS SHED. The half glazed gable ends. These were quite complex as far as good sheds went - moulded inner and outer frames, moulded glazing bars, moulded barge boards ( these get made and fitted as the last thing ) So, the main frame carcasses and moulding build up . Inner subframe surround And one glazing unit complete. Cheers. Allan
allan downes
TETBURY GOODS SHED 2 The gable ends completed. The original shed was mistakingly built in brick after I told them to build it in stone and if they'd have done as they were told, then it would have looked like this ! The material join on the full glazed gable will be hidden behind a support pier - so neh ! Cheers. Allan.

allan downes
I've got the roadside/loading elevation almost completed but not worth putting up yet and since we're going away for 8 days from friday the 20th there'll be no further Tetbury action as all day tomorrow will be spent at the local Merc dealership while they fit a new windscreen washer bottle to the Benz - which'll probably mean engine out, wing mirrors and bumpers removed along with all four doors, the roof, the floor pan and possibly the interior. So, once again, neh ! - and I'm gonna miss you guys so take as many liberties as you like with the thread - Freebs, Bill and Mullie, I leave you in charge ! ( Jeeze, 8 sleepless nights ahead.....) So adios amigo's for now, see y'all in 8 days time. Allan and Sylvia.
