RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted April 30, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 30, 2013 Greetings! I thought I'd start a separate 'Photographic Retrospective' thread, partly due to the sheer number of photos I've got to post. Whilst many photos feature the lovely layouts we had last weekend, I've got a fair few images of the participants themselves at the various events over the weekend, so let's start with the trip on the WSR on the Saturday... Looks like I'm being given 'the evil eye' here, and the weekend has barely started!! Simon Howard (Mr.S.Corn78) and Mike 'Stationmaster' Romans enjoying the trip: Rather nice image from Williton, which as been transformed by the new footbridge: Crossing trains at Williton on the way down to Minehead. No.88 would be our motive power on the way back later that afternoon... So, here we are at Minehead, and Paul Conibeare, General Manager of the WSR, prepares to give us a talk on the turntable, which was brought from Pwllheli in the 1970s, but not installed for about 30 years, until a location and funds could be found. It's now worth it's weight in gold, giving the railway much-valued operational flexibility: A veritable sea of orange! The WSR brought the 04 station pilot over specially for us to turn. This is 'the loco that never left Somerset', having initially been allocated to Taunton depot, then sold to British Cellophane at Bridgwater, and then eventually donated to the WSR: Steve Martin, the Operating Superintendant, eases the loco onto the turntable: Right then, time to start pushing! OK, who's first? Well, here's Howard from Warners, having a push, but unfortunately you're not pushing on the right bit, old chap! Matt (slow8dirty) and Phil (Phil-b259) show us how it should be done! Brian (Taz) and Nick (Brinkly) have their turn... Put your back into it, Number 197!! Simon Howard and Richard from Warners line up for a turn (perhaps we should have timed each pair?!): After the turntable, it was up to Minehead signalbox, and here Richard from the WSR gives the first party a description of how it all works: A Crompton on a Diesel Driving Experience day arrives: After the signal box, it was back to the station for a quick ice cream whilst the second group visited the box, during which time this lovely beast was admired on shed. Then it was into the loco shed and workshops for another guided tour. Here, Andy Forster, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the WSR, expounds on workshop practices and explains to us about some of the jobs that the WSR is currently tackling. In front of us is a new drag box for a GW tender. The old one, in Barry scrapyard condition and with about 50% of the metal content of the new one, was sitting on the floor adjacent to its replacement: Andy takes a look inside the cab of Raveningham Hall: Another photo of the new drag box: In the next shed, the party admires the frames of King 6024, which is in for refurbishment. Apparently the loco will be rebuilt with 3" less over the cylinders, to improve it's main line gauging profile (and thus route availability) when it returns to the national network: More to come! RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted April 30, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 30, 2013 OK, here are a few more from the WSR visit. A rather lovely autocoach, parked on the blocks at Minehead: Our steed for the return trip back to Bishops Lydeard, the 1605 ex-Minehead: John 'Metropolitan' Armstrong ponders the passing Somerset countryside: You've probably seen Our Dear Benefactor's photo of me leaning out of the carriage window as the train climbed the bank (mostly 1 in 50) up from Williton to Crowcombe. I'd like to say that 88 was working really hard (and in truth, she probably was), but she seemed to handle the load (7 Mark 1s) with effortless ease. This was what it was all about. It was one of those 'Line clear ahead, God's in His Heaven and all's right with the world' moments... When we got back to Bishops Lydeard, we went straight into the Taunton MRG's club room on the down platform. Whilst re-parking the car and walking back to the club room, I passed this rather splendid specimen from yesteryear: More photos still to come! RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted April 30, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 30, 2013 Here we are in the Taunton MRG's club room on Bishops Lydeard station. Unfortunately, 'Bath Green Park' was not erected, due to the whole layout being re-wired, but it was nevertheless interesting to see some of the baseboards 'up-ended' and the full wiring splendour visible. Also on display was a new layout based on the preserved Bishops Lydeard, which was under construction. And of course, 'Tamerig Central' was operational. Our thanks to the Taunton MRG lads for opening up specially for us. Graham Muz contemplates Tamerig: Was it something I said?! Tamerig fiddle yard: 'Bath Green Park' baseboards being re-wired: Chris Trerise from Kernow Model Rail Centre debating whether he's spotted one of his Limited Editions And so, inevitably, to the pub! More to come!

RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted April 30, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 30, 2013 The following morning, the Dedicated Few turned out at 0730 to help me set up, and a big thanks to all of you who did so. Here's the view a bit later in the hall, before the 'official' opening, with setting up still going on: John (Re6/6) has already started making trees! Simon Castens setting out the Titfield Thunderbolt's book display, whilst son Harry looks on (with experimental haircut, I'm told ): Dave Harding from The Model Shop, Exeter, in full discourse to Dave White, Andy Y and Maurice Hopper: Chris Trerise demonstrates his own in-house sales technique! (captions invited ) Mozzer & Son, Modelmakers to the Discerning and anyone with a metal hand! : Dave White demonstrates his DCC satellite dish...(or was he expecting rain?!): Jerry & Kim Clifford with John (Re6/6) Farmer: More photos to come! Brian Harrap
Really pleased you all had a good time on the WSR and at Staplegrove - all looks wonderful fun. Here's how I spent Members Day this year. Next year I will organise things a bit better, Brian.
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted April 30, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 30, 2013 Meanwhile, back in the small hall, the Mad Modular Meisters are hard at work, setting up: Stationmaster Mike and his 'high level' railway in the snow! Here we see the seemingly immovable 'Stubby's Old Pianah', with some of the goodies brought by Andy Y and Chris Trerise. Some of these would be auctioned (including the on-line auction), and some were for looking at only (including the first Dapol disc headcode Class 22!): As the day progressed, thoughts of pasties were never far away, and sooner or later, the inevitable happened: We couldn't have a Taunton Members Day without Neil 'BlackRat' Sullivan and 'that shirt'... David Taylor stands bathed in the bright colours of somewhere warmer than Taunton! David Taylor's non-DCC sound effects! We finally managed to unite 'that shirt' with 'that hat': Paul (PD&SWJR) and Mrs PD&SWJR partake of refreshments. Paul is apparently Luke Skywalker's ath.. That's better - 'Luke, I am your father!' Messrs Castens and Clifford seem to think that they're going to get something to eat in return for those bits of green paper... And still more to come! BlackRat
The hat was massive.....!!!! Luckily I managed to 'half inch' a bag of poly fibre from John, which was duly wedged inside the hat for the pic!!!!!

RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted April 30, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 30, 2013 Tim, I'm glad you managed to bag some photos amongst all the goings-on. What you haven't mentioned is that your Bazinga! shirt was almost as bright as Neil's - standing together was a bit of an eye-wrencher! I didn't have the camera out at the time, but I'm not even sure it would have had the dynamic range to capture all the colours involved....
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted April 30, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 30, 2013 And there's more... The Auction This was a most entertaining time... Chief Auctioneer Brinkly (well, he did it last year... ) took to the floor to auction off a number of goodies kindly provided by Kernow Model Rail Centre and others. Unfortunately, it looks like he's going to have to re-sit his RTR Recognition GCSE before next year.... (you had to be there, really, but here's a flavour... )... It all began in traditional fashion, with me saying a few words, and then our Dear Esteemed Benefactor took to the floor (with his speech written on the palm of his hand)... He certainly had everyone's attention... But then, the auction began.....
