ess1uk
Having looked at Daves "Thames" on-loan RFD 47, I decided I needed to correct the wrong coloured roof on my own Heljan Rfd 47, 47321. So having masked up the model and some hot weather to hand, the roof has been resprayed 47321 masked off by Simon Barnes, on Flickr The finished item 47321 revealed by Simon Barnes, on Flickr I also upgraded the chassis on an old Lima PGA wagon that I'd got, two more to follow. Are they easy to do? Is the chewed PGA salvageable? Or is it destined for the scrap yard? Martin

Or is it destined for the scrap yard? Martin Sorry Martin, got you mixed up with Neil. It wasn't too difficult, just careful cutting and then some filing to ensure a smooth surface on the chassis where the new suspension will be glued onto. Sadly the chassis is a write off. I started a stock list for him and it had, from memory, 20 locos on it and those were just the locos I could remember, he'll be expanding the list over time.
bescotbeast
Martin, I've upgraded another PGA chassis and took some pictures along the way. The first task was to make a cut along the top of the suspension unit that is being removed, I did this with my razor saw cut to top of suspension by Simon Barnes, on Flickr Once I'd got a cut that enabled the suspension to be bent, I then carefully snapped it off with a pair of pliers first suspension mounting removed by Simon Barnes, on Flickr suspension removed by Simon Barnes, on Flickr The next job was to remove the coupling mount at each end. I scored it into smaller sections with my razor saw and then carved it away with a craft knife. cuts to coupling mounting by Simon Barnes, on Flickr coupling mounting removed by Simon Barnes, on Flickr Another job is the moulded brake gear needs reducing in height by a small amount or it will foul the axle on the wheelset due to the reduced height of the replacement suspension units. brake gear by Simon Barnes, on Flickr Once this was done, I cleaned up and filed smooth the areas I'd been working on with my file. The area where the suspension units have been removed should be flush with the rest of the underframe. This consists of the spring unit, attached to the upright section of the compensation unit, the horizontal section I discard. (I should have took a picture showing this but never thought as they were survivors from the last wagon) When I'd done this then I added the new suspension units to the wagon and added the replacement wheels. Replacement whitemetal buffers were also added. buffers and suspension added by Simon Barnes, on Flickr The difference in ride height is visible between a modified and unmodified wagon. ride height difference by Simon Barnes, on Flickr
