Thanks Mike - must have got my wires crossed somewhere... I think the Midas might have been a later offering from the kit-car trade, or possibly something else ;)

Easy done Nidge , there were a lot of kit build Mini varients .

Did you get any front on shots of the rally cars at the weekend ?

One or two Mike, but there are more elsewhere online... I'll have a look ;)

I was in Bourne, Lincolnshire, last weekend and the Bourne Motor Racing Club's annual car show was on I saw this rare Mini.

Would it have been based on the van, or pick-up chassis?

My last rally mini, a 1430cc clubman that went like s*** off a shovel, well airborn in this shot. Unfortunately it needed a new bodyshell after this event following an altercation with a tree. I should never have accepted running at 13!

It's a Wildgoose. They were produced in the early 60's. According to Wiki you provided a minivan and the conversion cost in the order of £500 (which I suspect is more than the van cost). The ones I have seen have a vertically rising roof rather than the front hinged one shown.

I noticed the chap with the 'conning-tower' Mini had as much of a bother with the 'magic wand' gear stick as I used to with my brother's old van conversion!

You've never driven a Ford E93A or 100E then? (First catch your gear lever.)

Then remember it's a three speed box , so dont stick it where first would usually

be or you shoot off backwards .   :O

No, but a friend had a 100E - "A wrong gear for every occasion" was his view. Mind you, it got worse the day the gear stick came off in his hand. In 2nd, natch.....

Fords seemed to make a habit of that  - the gear lever of a BR Escort came off in my hand in the middle of Newport High St (which fortunately helped to explain my somewhat extended lunch hour ;) ).

Yes - I had a Mk1 Escort GT that did that a couple of times. One had to screw the "lid" of the gearbox down harder and hope it wouldn't work loose again.

re: Those "deep dish" minilites.

We would not have got away with those back in the Sixties in Essex - the Police were always on the look out for Mini's that needed wheel spats. He would have got a ticket,

A friend of mine (Hi, Pete) got a ticket once for having two (large) stickers for Castrol R on the doors of his Mini....

Best, Pete.

Eh?? What on earth for? I ran signwritten Escort & Avenger rally cars on the road for years with no problem at all - could have cost me a fortune! Getting a ticket for stickers is a complete new one on me (& probably also those who still have sponsorship on their competition cars!!) Those minilites outside the arches are still illegal though...

The law was changed sometime in the late '70's - but the Essex police tended to be a law until themselves... i.e. Don't ask me!

Something to do with Adverts on Personal vs Commercial vehicles.

Best, Pete.

Well, I was road rallying in the mid 70's & have never heard of that one before - almost all the cars had advertising on them! I reckon the copper must have made that up for their Christmas bar fund....!!
