Classic Minis galore...

They've not gone quite that bad Nidge, you can still get a good MK1 Mex for "only" 15-20K...!!There's a lovely one, apparently one of the last 12 built, for sale on Car & Classic now for £17K. Unfortunately my Euromillions numbers didn't come in last night so it's still well out of my reach!! A MK2 RS1800 though will set you back well more than that 70K....

Just nuts, isn't it (especially when that particular Mex I mentioned cost me about 4 hundred quid, & the Europa was £425 IIRC !)

Ah, I might have had another Escort in mind... ta for that. Cheap at half the price then!

Talking of Euro millions... should my luck 'hit the spot' soonish I'd plump for John Lennon's Ferrai 330GT 2+2 as my first impulse buy which is currently up for auction, along with his his home 'Kenwood' down in Weighbridge (from '64 to '68), a snip at a piffling £13.5m! Incredibly, the Fezza was his first car, purchased the day after passing his driving test in 1965, supplied by Brian Epstein's Brydor company along with many other choice automobiles. He had very good taste when it came to cars but by all accounts was an atrocious driver!

Doesn't that often seem to be the case with those that can afford cars like that though....?!

Sounds like there'd be plenty of room for garage space at his ex-country pile for your collection when your numbers come in...!! (and you have to smile when you think of the irony of the lyrics in Imagine when you consider his possessions!)

Well, the unopened packaging proclaims "DAPower System, drill activated, dual action".

Sounds like the half-way house Ian. The difference will be in holding it and possibly speed control, good luck when you do have a go.

Never mind the purists Nidge, I think it'll look stunning in that colour! Is it a BL colour, as I remember the inlaws had a Marina in a very similar colour when I met the missus, but she can't remember the actual colour name, but they always called it Black Cherry? I always liked that colour, even if I hated the car...!!

The BL dark purple was black tulip on early marinas, replaced by a lighter shade which I can't remember the name of. I still have a teal blue one under a tarpaulin for one day....................... :scratchhead:

Nah - from that era you know the Lusso is the one to have!

With the average Euro jackpot being on the high side I'd have one of each of the '60s classic Enzo jobbies mate! Well some of them at least... Lusso, 250LM, 250SWB, 275GTB, 246 Dino, 330GT 2+2... never really fancied the 250GTO though, not sure why (so easy to be blase when you can't afford 'em...). To paraphrase the late Philip Madoc in Dad's Army, 'also on ze list' would be : Lambo Miura, Islero, 350GT, Urraco and Espada, Maserati Ghibli, Bora and Mistral, Alfa 1300 / 1600 / 1750 / 2000 GTV (check this 'Junior' out http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/alfa-romeo/other-models/alfa-romeo-gt-junior-in-stunning-gillaio-yellow--true-classic/1282252 ), Lola T70, Ford GT40, Gordon Keeble, Aston DB4/5/6 (tricky one that, they're all rather fab, what the heck, let's throw in a Zagaot while we're at it), Series 1 E-type Jag Fixed Head, Lotus Europa Twin Cam and Elan +2, Jensen Interceptor, early Porsche 911, Radford Mini Cooper S, Bentley S3 Coninental... I'd best stop there before my brain implodes... :maninlove:

Wondering if I should change the title of the thread...!

That Alfa is gorgeous! How nice would it look parked next to this...

I have what to many would appear a strange Euromillions win wish list when it comes to classics - the aforementioned two cars would be on it, together with a mint Mk1 RS1600, RS2000, an ex-works Mk1 Escort rally car, Mk 2 Escort 1600 Sport, Mexico, RS1800 & 2000 & an ex-works Mk2 rally car. The others would be (all would have to be mint condition!) - Avenger Tiger, Dolomite Sprint, Vauxhall Magnum, Firenza droopsnoot & Chevette HSR, Sunbeam Lotus, Opel Ascona 400, Kadette GT/E & Manta 400, Delta Integrale, Escort  & 3 door Sierra Cosworth & an ex works Cooper S & Lancia Stratos rally car.  That should keep me quiet for a bit....!!

Daily drivers would be a Range Rover Sport, 911 GT3 RSR & a Jaguar XJR (which now 'starts' at only £92,370...!!!)

I don't know about changing the thread title, day dreaming is all well & good, but at least classic Min's are still just about 'affordable'...!!

It's not that they look like shiny t#rds it's the people that drive them (Tom Cruise "drives" one):

Prefer a real Bugatti (any of them).

Best, Pete.

PS If you don't care to hear: "Oh, Sugar!" turn your volume down, please.

I'm surprised that neither of them came out of that too badly. i think he managed to scrub off speed rather quickly, thankfully.

Compare to the modern Bugatti where the driver seemed to have absolutely no idea what he was doing...

Best, Pete.

Shoot me now and I'll die happy! That is exactly what my poor deluded brain cells conjure up in the minds eye when such yearnings take root, which at the moment is about once every half an hour or so....

As if daydreaming wasn't enough to tip me over the edge, look what I chanced upon at Gaydon this afternoon...

The story behind the above (cropped) picture is quite interesting. As part of a race meet I was invited to out at Eastern Creek, there was a small field of Group N touring cars. Whilst not being 'original' touring cars, they were built to the same spec. In the field there was three Mustangs, a Camaro, an Escort, a early 60s Falcon Sprint 2dr, and the above Mini.

I don't remember off the top of my head how many laps they did, but it was about 7-10. Whilst watching, the friend I was with started timing the deficit between the lead Mustang and the Mini. Every lap, the car lost about 13 seconds on average on the Mustang, with the result being that we started to see the Mustang at the back of the straight whilst the Mini was at the front. By all calculations, the Mini was due to be overtaken right on the last lap, near the finish line and finish a lap down. What was interesting is the Mini finished about 3 seconds ahead of the Mustang, and ended up staying on the lead lap. We still don't know how it did it, but it pulled off a stunning lap to finish with and absolutely everyone was cheering it down the straight every time it came past, and then rocking up onto three (and occasionally two) wheels through some of the corners. It was a fantastic race meet!
