bmthtrains - David
Heard the sad news tonight that Mick Aston passed away today. He will be missed for his giant contributions to both archeology and incredibly stripy jumpers! David
RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted June 24, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 24, 2013 Very sorry to hear this news...66 is no age really. Although he had an influence on archeology through his teaching, really it will be Time Team that will be his greatest contribution...the number of people this show has encouraged into archeology must be a legacy to be proud of. RIP Mick
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted June 24, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 24, 2013 Very sad loss - I always really enjoyed time team when he was in it. R.I.P Mick and thanks for the inspirational stuff you shared over the years

RMweb Premium Trainshed Terry Posted June 24, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 24, 2013 That is a sad loss to the archaeology world. He will be greatly missed by the people that he inspired to go into archaeology. Terry
RMweb Premium t-b-g Posted June 24, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 24, 2013 Very sad news. I enjoyed his involvement in Time Team immensely. He seemed to have a healthy disregard for authority and "celebrity" and an infectious enthusiasm. The program was never quite the same when he wasn't in it. The combination of Mick, Phil and Tony was a mix of very good TV chemistry. It is strange to think that the vast majority of people will know him through TV but to him that was really just a sideline and the real work was done elsewhere, out of the public gaze. RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted June 25, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 25, 2013 Very sad, truly infectious enthusiasm and a great teacher even in the limited time given by tv.
Torr Giffard LSWR 1951-71
mmm...heard it on the car radio on the way home off nights this morning. I'll miss his enthusiasm and obvious expertise....probably not so much his jumpers though. Dave
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted June 25, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 25, 2013 great shame to hear the news - although he hasn't been involved for 2 years Time Team and the rest of us will miss him.
BlackRat
Dreadful news, love the prog, love Mick and between them they have given me more than a keen interest in Archeology. RIP Mick, you leave behind a wonderful legacy.

RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted June 25, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 25, 2013 Ahh, what a loss. I always had great respect for the man, and even more so when he left Time Time when they began dumbing it down, and had the guts to say so too. An ex-work colleague who was an Archaeologist originally once worked on a TT dig, and had great respect for him and Phil - less so for some of the other, er, TV types..... trisonic
I've never heard of the guy but I sympathize.... I attended two "wakes" over the weekend for people who were much younger than me. Best, Pete.
RMweb Premium Peter Beckett Posted June 25, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 25, 2013 I have been a fan of Mick for many years. Although he left Time Team, he also contributed articles to "Archaeology", the magazine of the Council for British Archaeology (of which I am a member) and his latest was on Bodmin Moor (July- August 2013). Mick's Travels had been a part of the magazine for every issue since 2006. I shall miss him Peter
dave_long
Sad loss indeed, I was lucky enough to listen to a lecture of his while I studied for my Archaeology degree at Lampeter in the early 2000s, a very inspiring person.
The Lurker
What I always enjoyed about his contributions to Time Team was that he was always able to break his own misconceptions of a site in the light of new evidence - he never became entrenched in his position (pun accidental). RMweb Gold SHMD Posted June 25, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 25, 2013 For many years I did not posses a televisual device, but the few times that I came into contact with one invariable the remote control would settle on a “Time Team” show. Still does! My condolences to all. Kev.

34theletterbetweenB&D
Great communicator for his subject. Very helpful when I e-mailed him with 'follow on' questions that were raised by the evidence from a couple of the Time Team digs. It's not how long you stay around, it's the quality of what you did and how folks remember you. And he was unforgettable for all the right reasons. RIP. Pyewipe Jct
Never been much of a fan of Time Team (in spite of being in the business), but Mick Aston always seemed to be a really sound bloke & will be much missed - RIP Mick
John_Hughes
I loved the comment in one of the notices of his passing that he had been passionate about archaeology as a teenager, despite his school's best efforts to stop him! My wife went to the same school (a couple of years ahead of Micky, as he was to everyone then) and said that that was undoubtedly true of the place (Oldbury Grammar, if you want to know). Sounds like failing to meet the aspirations of bright students is nothing new! Anyway, rest in peace, Micky!
RMweb Premium PaternosterRow Posted July 7, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 7, 2013 Great loss to archaeology and television. It was a pleasure just to hear him speak - an extremely knowledgeable and passionate man. He also had a Brummie twang to boot which let Brummies like me feel that having a colloquial accent was no bar to pursuing an intellectual career. He'll be sadly missed.
