RMweb Premium New Haven Neil Posted June 12, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 12, 2017 That's Karmann build quality for you. Fraggle Rock is probably where all these E9s have come to see out their useful lives without being bothered by such things as the annual MoT...... The fly in the ointment is to bring a vehicle here over 3 years old it has to pass the Manx test, which is much more stringent than the MOT. Both our then recently MOT'd cars failed expensively when we came here.

Rugd1022
More shots from Beaulieu on Sunday... Organiser Nick Hunter's Mk2 1275 S alongside mine... Mk2 998 Cooper 'SCV 272G' used to be mine, I sold it to Kevin and Samantha who promptly stripped it down and restored it from top to bottom (brave souls...!)... Mk2 1275 S 'APC 95H' as mentioned earlier in the thread, almost got the chop during the owner's divorce many years ago... The '67 Mk1 Minisprint again... Radford Mk1 Mini Traveller... Demon Mini driver Barry 'Whizzo' Williams with Mike Cooper (son of John) alongside Mike's Mk2 1275 S which spent many years on display in the old Cooper garage at Ferring in Sussex... Lord Snowdon and Princess Margeret's Mk1 in unusual Connaught Green, it has a Tilling style wind up window on the driver's side only... Fab W&P Mk3... Well known Minisprint racer... If Gerry Anderson built a Mini based car... I've posted photos of this Stewart & Ardern Minisprint before but it appears to have changed hands and had some cosmetic tweaks since I last saw it, it used to have W&P arches and 6''x10'' Minilites... Early Cosmics on a '64 Mk1 Cooper S... Nice standard looking Mk3 1275 S with a few period bits and rear lights from a Mk4... 'Speedwell' Mk1 Cooper S... Another nice Mk3 1275 S...
steve1
They're all a lot smarter than the ratty old Mini "van with windows" my brother had as his first car As for Whizzo, I used to watch him racing 'hot rods' at Wimbledon stadium in the early 1970s. steve

PatB
Slightly OT, but I was looking at some of the YouTube videos showcasing Jay Leno's unfeasibly massive old car collection. The thought struck me: with such a large number of cars, what's going to happen to them after his death? I suspect that the hype generators at whichever auction house handles the sale will explode. RANGERS
There are no exemptions on this, all vehicles over three regardless of age are subject to a first registration inspection. There is a power of inspection available to stop vehicles at the roadside and require them to undergo the full test at any time. As IOM isn't technically a part of the EU, they aren't bound by the directive covering vehicle testing.

brianusa
As most may know, there is no MOT as such in the US. There is an Emissions Test every couple of years costing $15 which over time has cost quite a lot of money; new cars require to be tested after five years but after all those years, my cars have never failed so I am out a considerable sum for nothing! Obviously there are 'old bangers' out there that may need attention but one rarely see's cars issuing a plume of oil smoke that was commonplace years ago. After twenty five years, the car is finally exempt if it is indeed still running; my car has four years to go! Brian
RMweb Gold chriswright03 Posted June 15, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 15, 2017 Some cracking pictures of Minis there Nidge but it would seem none of the inside pictures showed a clothes peg holding the choke out!
Rugd1022
Cheers Chris, there were some gobsmackingly nice cars on show on Sunday, particularly the Mk1s and 2s, several of which I've never seen before. Happy to report that all but one of my Minis down the years has been issued with said cloths peg! Also happy to report that my Mk2 S didn't explode / overheat / melt in the heavy traffic on the way home from Beaulieu. Just a few days previously it'd been down at Southam Mini & Metro for over a week to have the clutch freed off, a new clutch slave cylinder fitted, the brake fluid replaced, four new self adjusting shock absorbers fitted and the ride height lowered a little more all round. Still lots to do (there always is) including cleaning up and fitting the period roof console I collected from a mate on Sunday. A quick trial fit showed that it was a good purchase and really adds something to the feel of the interior. I had some very nice conversations with other Mini owners, one in particular who said seeing the non standard paintwork on my car has encouraged him to repaint his early 997 Cooper in something other than it's Tartan Red & Black combo.... 'well done for having the b*ll*cks to go against the grain!'' were his exact words, which made me smile. A photographer who works for Minimag took my details and wants to do a photo shoot of the wee purple missile in the near future, we had a chat at Gaydon the other week about period modified vs factory fresh concourse cars and he seems very keen to get my car in the magazine. RANGERS
Waiting to board a ferry at Calais this morning, being Le Mans weekend, all manner of exotica came off the ferry in front of us heading South. A line of about a dozen Astons various modern types, a DBS, DB6 and a DB4 adding a little spice. Others included numerous Ferarris, mostly modern ones; a sixties Porsche 911, three E types accompanied by an XK120, Marcos GT, Lotus Esprit and Europa, an Iso Grifo I'd never seen one before, only recognised it from the Matchbox model I had as a kid but my favourites were an immaculate H plate Cortina 1600E accompanied by a D plate Cortina GT. Sadly I was chained to the coach so couldn't get any photos.
RMweb Gold chriswright03 Posted June 16, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 16, 2017 Must admit I still have a soft spot for the old Mini. Had a couple in the past which were great fun and even if they had a few quid chucked at them (as they did) they were still brilliant value for money. Pictured below is one which I spent a fair bit of time and money on only to let it go through boredom/stupidity! Found a very low mileage MG Metro so used it as a donor for engine gearbox and seats which with other bits made it very non standard, very quick and very nice to be in altogether.

Your Mk1 is gorgeous! It reminds me of 'BAP 245B' from Randall & Hopkirk, The Saint and The Persuaders - another '64 red Austin 850 with matching red interior (it was restored by the late John Kelly and is still around, John also restored the 'Adam Adamant' Radford 'AA1000' about ten years ago). I've bee nthinking about selling the Jap Mini and bagging a Mk1 again, I do miss my old ones and should have kept at least one of them. I'm also on the Mk1 forum (user name is WMU 211G), it's the best Mini forum by far, the knowledge amongst the membership is fantastic as is the variety of cars. The roof console I picked up last weekend fits a treat... Edit : can we see / hear more about your Mk1 please, it looks a gem. The steering wheel looks like a Formula or Les Leston job.... although I may be wrong of course! And dear old 'BAP' in its glory years in 'R&H' with and without wing mirrors... Damaged bumper ahoy... And in The Saint... Edited June 17, 2017 by Rugd1022

Rugd1022
I nipped down to Southam this morning to pay the latest bill on the wee purple thingie, while I was there I clocked an interesting and significant Mk3 Cooper S which belongs to a friend - 'VOH 347J' is one of only two which were ever officially road tested by the motoring press when they were new, the other one 'VKN 440J' is also still with us and belongs to the same owner, however 'VOH' was put into the hands of BL's Special Tuning Department at Abingdon when new and given an 8-port cylinder head with Amal carbs, giving it a quoted 124bhp at 7,000rpm. It was featured in the 21/8/71 issue of 'Motor' at the time. The original shell needs a lot of work but the 8-port motor is ready to be dropped in when the time comes... The original 1971 ST sticker is still on the rotten off side wing...

The Downton 1275GT quoted in the test figures sounds intriguing in the sense that it seemed to have combined performance and economy figures that surpass the test "ST" Mini.
