Apparently the Jag used in the Morse series was something of an old banger. It had the smaller and less popular 2.4 litre engine and the body was full of filler. No doubt when it was disposed of it was at a profit being a 'star car'.

I believe "248 RPA" was eventually sold to John Thaw himself, as he had grown quite attached to it.

'248 RPA' was sold a few years later for about £100k after a lengthy restoration. Happy to say another car which John spent a lot of time in (but not driving) has recently come out of a (very) lengthy restoration, namely 'NHK 295M', the Mk1 3 litre Consul GT from 'The Sweeney'. Steve the owner bought it as a runner in 1988 but decided to restore it, it took several attempts as he was let down very badly along the way, but having seen it in the flesh it's a real beauty and he managed to save as much of the original body work and trim as possible, the period / series correct number plates are repros though, the 1973 originals belong to a member of the old 'Sweeney Lounge' forum....

Not so sure about that, it seems it was raffled, take your time before looking at the cost of hiring it...

Wow, takes me back to our management car park, used to be packed with these and if you were lucky we had a few on the pool car section also and to,get one of these for a job over the usual Escort or even Cortina was a treat.......then again if you could wangle a Capri you were the dogs for the day ;)

Mk1 and 2 Grannies are still very handsome looking cars even now, they still have the same amount of 'road presence' they had in the '70s and '80s. I remember my Grandad's Mk1 estate seemed absolutely huge to me as a nipper. He was virtually blind so Nan drove it, he'd be sat beside her up front puffing on his big cigars. It made his cousin John's 1970 Rover P5B Coupe look distinctly old fashioned in comparison - I'd happily have both now though.

Quiz time - does anyone recognise the two door coupe that Mick Jagger is about to get into in this 1969 photo, the wind mounted indicator repeater suggests something Italian...?

Alfa Romeo 2600 Coupe perhaps?

the repeater is identical to those on my Alfa GTV, though the mirror is different.

Hmmm…. just had a look at some photos and the roofline / side window aspect almost match but the shape of the windscreen is completely different at the top. Thought it might be a Zagato version of the Alfa but that doesn't fit either. Also thought of a Gordon Keeble GT but alas that's not it either. A Lancia of some sort perhaps...?

Very puzzling I cant match it to a Lancia either, nothing Italian come to that. But that repeater is certainly Italian origin. The way the bonnet curves inwards should give it away and the Alfa 2600 Zagato seems to do that, but the rest doesn’t fit well.

Me too, very annoying.....that screen and bonnet shut line should be a giveaway but after looking for a while I am giving up, pretty sure it’s a two door though, but a big one.

Help a biker out here, chaps!  What makes a Granada a Consul?

It was the official model name for the Mk1 when introduced in '72, changed to Granada soon after.

Quick one from the NEC a few years ago, can you tell I've been watching 'Minder'...?

A quickie before I trip over this unopened bottle of Martini.... Richard Burton and chums on location for 'Villain' in downtown Bracknell in September 1970 with the Burnt Grey over Silver Birch Rover P5B Coupe used prominently in the film.... I can almost smell the leather and wood interior from here...

A thinner wallet ?

The Consul was the basic model (quite often used as a taxi) and the Granada was the top of the range model with a V6 engine and extra trim. The Consul 3litre GT was a basic trim model with the extra power of a 'breathed on' V6 for the police. At the time Ford had a good deal of the market in police patrol cars.
