Andrew P
That looks superb Jonathan, it really will look good once the track goes down on that part. Bodge.
aplinewalker
A couple of shots showing about three hours work. North Junction 3.jpg I couldn't resist adding some plain track to see what the flow from one of the turnouts would be like. Tested with a Bachy LMS coach bogie North Junction 4.jpg Thats incredible ..... im gob smacked ,,,, if I got that far it would be a glass case by now,,, Boy O boy every time a look at another layout there is something amazing ,,,, making your own turnouts ???? awesome ... RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted September 11, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 11, 2014 (edited) Most of the branch crossover has been completed today. Just some odd half chairs to fit and the slide chairs, copper-clad tie bars and wiring to do, so hopefully it will go on the layout tomorrow. This allows trains departing platform 3 (the branch platform) to gain the down branchline and also allows branch trains terminating at Derwent to run round their train. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted September 12, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 12, 2014 (edited) I got the branch crossover in position and wired it up save for the crossings which need to be wired to a change-over switch and some means by which to change the turnout direction. I am investigating a number of possibilities. A view from the back of one of my 3Fs. Well almost, if I got the camera a little lower. The coaches on the left are there as they would not reverse over the turnout they are near. Then I measured the back-to-backs - miles too narrow. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted September 16, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 16, 2014 (edited) The next turnout to be completed was the one that gives access to the yard from the goods/branch run-round loop. This took about 4 hours work. I experimented putting in a couple of copper-clad sleepers to cut down on the number of wires which would otherwise need soldering to the bottom of the rails. If I had moved the one on the switch rails a little further up I could have attached the crossing too. Just another two wires need to be soldered to copper-clads on the stock rails and if I get these close to rails/copper-clad joints, then they will virtually disappear. One wire wants adding to the crossing too. Edited September 17, 2014 by Rowsley17D
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted September 18, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 18, 2014 (edited) The turn-out that closes the goods/branch run-round loop was completed today. It's on a gentle curve. The catch-point was also included due to its close proximity. This protects the mainline. I hope Mike the Stationmaster approves? Is it a catch-point or a trap? As it's a part of a turn-out, I assume it's a catch-point. There are only three wires connected to this formation thanks to using a couple of copper-clad sleepers. One each for the stock rails and one for the crossing. Next on to the south junction and associated crossover which fits to the bottom of this formation. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted September 23, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 23, 2014 The south junction was laid tonight complete with the goods/run-round loop. From the other direction 3F stands in what will be the branch platform (3) next to the goods-yard turnout on the loop.

RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted September 24, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 24, 2014 Thanks for the "young" Andy, but I'm retiring (early, I must point out) at the end of October. More time for modelling!
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted September 24, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 24, 2014 The track-work in the station area was put down today. It's not fixed in place and the plain sections need droppers adding. The express is in platform 1 (up) and there's plenty of room for the Jub with 8 bogies. The 3F and brake van are in platform 3, the branch platform. To the left is where the goods yard will be. The goods yards will be in the foreground. A shot from the reverse direction.
Andrew P
Thanks for the "young" Andy, but I'm retiring (early, I must point out) at the end of October. More time for modelling! RETIRING? AT JUST 35? hahhaha, well I could have done with doing that, hahahahha You guys work hard, not just the one day a week that people think, but no doubt you will still be called upon for little things. But its good to know that there will be more modelling time, now I daren't ask for Grass just yet, hhahah Bodge Edited September 24, 2014 by Andrew P
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted September 24, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 24, 2014 Hi Andy, it's my secular job that I'm retiring from (civil servant). So I'll be involved with my church job the same as usual although may undertake a little more on this front in the New Year. I'm not taking on anything more until the New Year.
LNER4479
Ooh - that 'Jub' looks the part on them eight coaches. A vision in maroon. Just needs a 'Crimson Rambler' to complete the scene I hope the retirement speeds up progress as this is all beginning to shape up rather nicely. (when I first read that you 'may undertake a little more' it sounded like you were going to join a firm of Funeral Directors )
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted September 24, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 24, 2014 Hi there, I do get to meet a lot of funeral directors but never thought about asking for a job. As for the crimson rambler, I have the Bachy black version and am trying to pluck up the courage to re-spray it. I also have the NRM Midland one but am reluctant to change it to LMS from Midland. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted October 8, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 8, 2014 (edited) I have nearly completed ballasting the branch crossover and wanted to see what it looked like to the camera. I sprayed the formation with Rail Match track dirt and touched up the chairs with their Rail Colour. I have used C&L stuck down with dilute vinyl glue using the Gordon (of ET fame) and Jason's (Sandside) method of painting the glue around the timbers and scattering ballast on top, then hoovering off. I used C&L light grey and their Firebox Ash for the cess. I see one of the chairs has moved, top photo and the loco fall-plate has risen up. It's a bit of a labour of love but far better results that the wet method. I hope the plain sections can be ballasted the Coachmann way, glue, stick down track, cover with ballast, hoover off. Andrew P
Evening Jonathan, its looking nice, I too will be using Larry, (Coachmans) ballasting method.
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted October 8, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 8, 2014 Evening Jonathan, its looking nice, I too will be using Larry, (Coachmans) ballasting method. It's a quick method, Andy. Probably best just to do a yard at a time and a ruled line at the sleeper ends so you can line everything up. You just end up getting glue all over the place if you try and use a straight edge. Another way would be to glue a Templot plan of the formation onto the cork/foam and aline the tracks on that. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted October 11, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 11, 2014 (edited) I had this Friday off using up leave before I retire so got the other gable wall covered over. This meant I could start making the framework to bring the track from the right-hand end of the fiddle-yard to meet the section from the left-hand end of the station track. The gradient is such that I can make the part I have completed less steep. This curved section raises the track by about 3 cm. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted October 12, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 12, 2014 The framework was completed so that it meets up with the climb to the station area and the down line was laid. Here is my Jub climbing the newly laid track on the bank. and from the other end.

RMweb Gold ChrisN Posted October 15, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 15, 2014 Hi Andy, it is going well and will go even better when I retire in three weeks. Lots of time for modelling and a lump sum to spend. The good times are here again!! Retirement, more time for modelling? Yeah right!. To be fair I am only semi retired but seem only to model in the evening still, except for baseboard building. All the best with your retirement, it was almost the best thing I ever did. The room is looking nice and it is good to see the framework completed.

There's the frame to take the line down to FY at this end then the scenic section to build that will go over this bit which will hopefully be an MPD. Only 10 more working days to go. Not that I'm counting. Edited October 21, 2014 by Rowsley17D
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted October 19, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 19, 2014 (edited) A start has been made on the final gradient to take the main line to the right-hand end of the main scenic section. Here it is next to the one that takes the main line to the other end of the scenic section. Must straighten that wonky leg. A view of most of the curve (40" radius). And a view showing what is left to bridge. The branch will come in from the left and join along the straight. The main and branch will be side by side for a while until the main line drops from view.
