Class 56s,new and old photos...

Recommended Posts

Just a heads up if anyone is in the area - I worked a train past Leicester Depot yesterday and saw 56 006 in (slightly faded) BR blue by the fuelling point... it really did stand out, like a vision from the late '70s / early '80s. Not sure how long it'll be there but thought it worth a mention  ;)

According to the current issue of Rail Express, 56006 is there for repairs to it's wiring following cable theft.

Hope that helps.

More old photos from my collection.

Tonight it's all "Black Diamonds" - Coal Sector - IMO the best livery the 56's have carried. Again all photos taken in the North East between 1988-1995.

For a few months in 1993 this was part of an interesting three way, Sunday afternoon, loco swap between Toton, South Dock and Blyth Cambois.

Does any one know what shade of green DCR use on their 56 303?

Ian

At the time of repainting, it was quoted it was GWR Loco Brunswick green. There was a rumour it was going to be fully lined out for the 175th GWR anniversary in 2010. I stand to be corrected on that one...

Part 5

More photos from the late 90s

Mostly Loadhaul and Transrail.  By this time it was nice to see 56s on a wider variety of workings in the north east away from traditional mgr traffic.

I hope these shots are of interest to Cl56 fans - I can't find my notes, so I don't know the dates at the moment:

post-15533-0-26812000-1415564495_thumb.jpg

This was near Avonmouth - 56086 had hauled the wagons out of the sidings and then run round - anyone know what these wagons were used for - they don't look like the normal coal wagons?

post-15533-0-92854100-1415564672_thumb.jpg

This was at Resolven, I think, on the old Vale of Neath line. Loco is 56069, looking very shiny.

post-15533-0-43854900-1415564778_thumb.jpg

56069 a few minutes later at the loading facility at Cwmgwrach.

post-15533-0-62860900-1415564854_thumb.jpg

This in 56088 at Onllwyn, later the same day. Having arrived with the empties and run round using the weed-infested line in the foreground, it was propelling the train into the sidings.

Happy days! Glad there are still a few Grids on the network, although I haven't seen one for ages - the only trains through Ross-on-Wye are on the back of low loaders on the M50!

I think this may be a train of MEAs, it sounds like they had been loaded in Bennetts siding with imported coal.

I think they needed to go over the weighbridge in the BBHT (Bristol Bulk Handling Terminal) hence the reason to run round.

Bennetts often sent train loads of coal to Rugby cement works as well as other locations,,

Here are a few more Grids from days gone by:

post-15533-0-88859600-1415658855_thumb.jpg

56091 at York on 4th June 1981. Sorry about the quality - the negative is in a pretty awful state.

Can't find the info on these. The slides are stamped 1991.

post-15533-0-19365300-1415659131_thumb.jpg

This was two years later - potash empties to Boulby at Hunts Cliff. Surely this location deserves to be as famous as the Dawlish Sea Wall?

A couple from 1985 today - oh goodness, that's nearly 30 years ago.

post-15533-0-61418400-1415917816_thumb.jpg

56043 & 56036 at Stratford heading what I presume is a stone train to Purfleet.

post-15533-0-73046100-1415917952_thumb.jpg

And a few days later, 56078 at New Street, heading a drag to Nuneaton with a diverted Euston train, attracting a reasonable crowd in the process.
