Quite interesting comments about height of layouts, recently its been more common to raise them higher to aid adults to see them to eye level and ease operators backs. having said that if layouts were lowered to wheel chair/child friendly height, would that restrict the aged and less supple from seeing the layouts side on ?

This a difficult one to solve as the barrier come step that you some times see is fine for children but not the dissabled

Hydraulic supports for layouts could be the answer. Raise or lower, depending on your audience.

Well it's nearly 24hrs since this show closed and still no information about 2015. This really isn't good enough.

'Angry of Purley...

Well we will be there, with something in 2FS. Not 100% sure what yet but we are currently discussing a couple of ideas :scratchhead:

On Adavoyle Junction we dropped one corner board, so that seated and wheelchair viewers could see trains crossing the bridges. On the right here:

Here it is under construction in 1986:

I would have dropped the whole layout another 6", but was out-voted.

Martin.

Sorry, wandered off-topic.

On the viewing height debate we tend to go for what suits the vast majority of viewers and the operators - around 4' at track level. We realise this is not ideal for those in a wheelchair but we always take a periscope with us. We have lots of comments about it being a good/comfortable viewing helight but very few, usualy the same person, complaining its too high. Its always going to be a compromise, hence the periscope being part of our exhibition kit.

If layouts were lower, the first row of spectators (and the operators) could be seated. This would allow the second row standing behind them to see better, so making it easier for more people to see the layouts. Those wanting an eye-level view could either wait until a seat becomes free, or hire a periscope and use it the other way up.

Martin.

The seats would take up a lot of room in the aisles making it much harder for the wheelchair users (and the rest of us) to get round the show. Whilst layout height must

have been a real issue for the wheelchair users present yesterday I got the impression that the aisles were generally wide enough for easy manouvering.

Personally I thought the show was good value for money, there was enough to hold the interest for 3-4 hours (or more) and I dare say some folk saved a fortune on postage. I also thought the entry price was in line with the cost of other exhibitions in the region.

Please don't make this show bigger. Quality over quantity any time. I don't think I know of any better venues, it just tends to be hot on this weekend.

I'll add my thanks to David and the team.

If you look at the cost of inviting a layout to an exhibition, for just a small layout you have £150 plus for a van, around £100 for diesel then you have to accommodate the operators for two nights say 4 operators, two rooms so this is around £200. Four operators can't all travel in a van so you have fuel costs for a car as well. So the minimum for a small layout is £500 for a weekend. So continue with the arithmetic and you will see that if you are going to put on an exhibition like Railex, you cannot do it on the cheap so I would suggest the entry cost was justified.

We have been £8 for adult entry for a couple of years, Expo EM was £8 for non members and Scalefourum the same Wigan is £10 so I don't think we are any more expensive than other shows, our trade stand fees are not too high either as I don't want to lose the support of our specialist traders.

I don't plan to move venue as we have a booking on the same May bank holiday for at least the next three years, hopefully it will be more of the same with improvements if we can make them.

A big thank you to the layouts, trade, demos, and our club members who make it work over the weekend.

I tried to leave the stadium about 7.15 to find I had left the key to my pushbike lock at home, and had to get Viki to the stadium in a taxi with it to unleash me!

At least the admission charge is nowhere near that charged by Ally Pally, which I've never gone to even though it is literally just down the road.

At £8 for a show that you can stay all day, see so many good layouts. 18 in fact and 75 stands in all and if it saves you post and packing on items that you would have ordered  through the mail you could actually save money by going

Thanks for that, Ant.   I heard the first part of the loudspeaker announcement but did not catch all of it because, as for much of Sunday, someone was talking to me.

This was as sociable a show as I have ever attended.  Forum inmates were out in force and I was pleased to meet Castle at last.  A cuppa with an old friend and former workmate was a particular pleasure because said guy had been seriously ill and this was his first show in 12 months.

Although it did get warm in the hall I was not in serious discomfort because I left my jacket in the car, taking with me all I needed in my backpack, or mobile home as I call it.  To avoid clouting anyone accidentally I sling it over my right shoulder.

As others have said there wasn't a duff layout there.  That one or two were not to my personal taste does not make them sub-standard.  Blackgill seemed to have the hiccups when i saw it but that does not detract from its appeal.  If it does not shout north-east at you then you do not know much of the north-east!  Wadebridge I thought exquisite - yet another fine advertisement for 2mm finescale and I commend it to certain people at BRM!  I enjoyed meeting Terry of Earls Court and repeat my comment from elsewhere that it is good to see some good old-fashioned modelling.  He recognises the old Airfix [later Dapol] suburbans as the fine source of raw materials that they are.  Finally, how can anyone not be impressed with Bath Green Park?  It must have been a close contender for best in show but Dewsbury Midland was a worthy winner of that accolade.

I find the catering at Stoke Mandible satisfactory.  Sausage roll, chips and beans did me for lunch and were an impulse purchase for I had made and brought sandwiches.  If you want proper Sunday lunch go to a carvery.

My apologies from "The Desperadoes"  regarding the exhibiting of Cliffhanger at the exhibition. (it was not at it's best).

All new operating system, and all new locomotives. Too much too quickly.

Hence we had to do a manual running of the layout on Saturday until it calmed down a bit, then over night re do the programming.

By Sunday morning it was almost there and we went back to automation, But with new glitches.

David (and the Railex teem) though was always on hand. it was a very busy, yet enjoyable weekend.

That was my fault. I had the cheese sandwich.

Martin.

I think at some shows we get spoilt where food is concerned (most I don't eat at as I go after lunch), here we had the normal range of food that the cafe sells week in week out to its normal punters (younger people). What I had was well cooked, hot,and tasty and did not cost the earth, perhaps not what I would normally buy but it made a change

Just found out we were around 20% up on numbers than the previous year and that was up on the year before, no wonder it got hot.

I am really pleased that you were rewarded this way for all the hard work that goes in to producing a show. As others have said, the quality of exhibits was way above average and any show which has both Bath Green Park and Dewsbury Midland must be something special. I had a fine day on Sunday helping Giles with The End of the Line which requires a lot of concentration to run, but attracts a great deal of interest.

I look forward to being back next year with Weydon Road.

Julian
