winterbournecm
I have found my old jotter from 1985 / 1986 which I scribbled away in as a 16/17 year old. It was a magic time for me, just leaving school, (should have been revising really) and was ready to start my YTS scheme on the railways in Cornwall. I had signed an idenmity form with Mr Lockett at Penzance which allowed me to tag along with the railway staff at Penzance. I was allowed (under supervision) to help out with labelling trains, visiting the Signalbox and generally helping out. It seems an improbable situation, and was not without controversy, but i had a faboulous time, and learned so much prior to my "offical" career beginning! Here are the bare bones of the locos and movements I recorded. I hope it may be formulated into an article once I organise my pictures to accompany it. Here is the first instalment from June to Mid August 1985. I would appreciate any corrections to my guestimations regarding the actual workings. 1985 DIARY 1st June 1985 47292 Man Picc – Penznace 50036 06.15 Penzance to Padd 3rd June 1985 50004 07.01 Ply – Pz 50049 11.35 Penz – Ply 47628 5th June 1985 50015 09.24 Penzance to paddington 45120 06.50 Swindon to Penzance 6th June 50050 07.01 Ply – Penz 45138 18.15 Penz – Bristol TM 7th June 1985 50012 07.01 Ply – Penz 47608 50016 15.27 Penz – Plymouth 8th June 1985 Single line working was in operation from Liskeard to Saltash due to an incident 50041 Manchester – Penz 43143 13.46 Pz – Padd 50021 Nottingham – Penzance 12th June 1985 50014 06.50 Swindon to Penzance 50007 16.15 Penzance to Paddington 14th June 1985 45146 06.50 Swindon to Penz 45146 13.54 Penz – Bristol 47607 Nottingham – Pnz 15th June 1985 (Sat) 50044 Man Picc – Penz 50021 16.15 – Padd 18th June 1985 – 4 class 45s at Penzance during the morning! 50017 Ply – Pz 45077 11.35 Penzance to Ply 45058 12.00 Penzance Parcels 47575 / 45124 stabled 45101 06.50 Swn – Penzance 37120 seen at Par on clay DMU 51307/51323 Gunnislake 45101 13.54 Penzance to Bristol 19th June 1985 50018 07.21 Ply – Penz 43130 13.46 Penz – Padd 33056 at Exeter) 31119 Newton Abbot 33026 Exeter – Paignton local 43009 15.40 Padd – Penz 20th June 1985 50021 07.21 Ply – Penz 50016 11.35 Penz – Ply 47594 / 623 stabled at Penzance 31425 Plymouth Parcels Laira: 47321 45101 31286 31202 21st June 31326 Parcels from Plymouth 33024 Stabled at Exeter: 31202 31286 3119 31255 45058 47145 15.27 Padd – Plym 47512 33102 at Exeter 23rd June 1985 50011 Plymouth to Penz 47532 09.32 Penz – Padd 43142 25th June 1985 47621 07.21 Ply – Penz 47621 11.35 Penz – Ply 50050 Ply – Penzance 26th June 1985 50020 10.50 Penz – Padd 37247 Clays 37258 Clay trips 45115 09.18 Leeds – Penz 50012 18.15 Pz – Bristol 27th June 1985 50011 07.21 Ply – Penz Stabled at Penz: 50029 50007 47409 09.32 Ex Penz 45118 13.54 Penz – Bristl 50024 09.39 Padd – Penz 50024 16.17 penz – padd 1st July 1985 47513 10.50 Penz – Padd 45046 at St Blazey 45006 Par freight 37181 freight to Parkandillack branch 50019 Passenger 2nd July 1985 50011 07.21 Ply – Penz 50007 stabled Penz 4th July 1985 50018 07.21 Ply – Penz 7th July 1985 Cardiff Canton open day 50002 07.21 Ply – Penz 45139 09.18 Penzance – Leeds 45110 stabled Penzance 47404 12.00 parcels Exeter: 45105 33017 Taunton: 45019 Bath Road: 25035 / 31234 / 31272 / 56034 / 37246 / 47088 / 33018 / 33013 / 33064 / 56031 / 47472 / 31178 / 31168 Severn Tunnel Jn 47033 / 47063 / 37248 / 47352 / 47107 / 47162 / 31164 / 25209 / 37258 / 37205 / 37208 / 37189 / 08848 / 08654 / 08778 / 08957 / 08668 / 47086 / 33045 / 33005 Newport 37297 / 37218 / 56049 / 08940 / 47512 / 37158 / 37187 / 37235 / 37255 / 47097 / 47591 / 47616 / 37149 / 37147 / 37304 / 37217 / 08660 Cardiff Canton (open day) D200 / 20103 / 20020 / 33008 / 37229 / 03144 / 08932 / 47241 / 37171 / 56038 (or maybe 048) / 47597 / 47079 / 37278 / 08835 / 37185 / Class 24 Experiment / D4 (Class 44) / 37154 / 31158 / 31435 / 31210 / 58003 / 56055 / 37129 / 56041 / 47011 / 47321 / 08780 8th July 1985 50006 07.21 Ply – Penz 45107 13.54 Penz – Bristol 11th July 1985 50029 Down TPO Stabled Penz: 45135 47556 06.50 Swindon – Penzance 13th July 1985 50028 Manchester – Penzance 50023 16.15 Penz – Padd 15th July 1985 50021 07.21 Ply – Penz 50032 16.15 Penz – Padd 16th July 1985 45138 07.01 Exeter to Penzance 50013 09.18 Padd – penzance 37196 named Trepolpen at Truro 17TH July 1985 50049 07.21 Ply – Penz 45014 Block clay at Liskeard (from box) 47567 18th July 1985 47625 06.50 Swn – Penz 47609 12.00 Pz – Glasgow 50009 13.40 Padd – Penz 19th July 1985 50029 07.21 Plymouth – Penz 43172 13.46 Penz – Padd 50018 Brighton – Penz 20th July 1985 50029 manchester – Penz 50025 16.15 Penz – Padd 22nd July 1985 50035 07.21 Ply – Penz 47557 13.54 Penzance – Bristol 45145 09.15 Leeds – Penzance 23rd July 1985 50039 07.21 Ply – Penz 50030 16.15 Penz – Padd 24th July 1985 50031 07.21 Ply – Penz 47467 10.50 Penz – Padd 50002 13.54 Penzance to Bristol 50046 13.40 Padd – Penz 25th July 1985 50018 07.21 Plymouth – Penz 26th July 1985 50030 07.21 Ply – penz 50002 15.27 Penz – Plymouth 50009 10.18 Padd – Penz 28th July 1985 50041 Manchester – penz 47145 13.54 Penzance to O.O.C. parcels 37024 York – Penzance relief 29th July 1985 50014 07.21 Plymouth – Penzance 47145 12.00 Penz – Glas parcels 50013 10.00 Liverpool – penzance 30th July 1985 50019 07.21 Ply – penz 50041 11.35 Penz – Ply 47364 12.00 Penz – Glas parcels 45110 06.50 Swn _ penz 50041 09.36 Liv – Penz 1st Aug 1985 50018 07.21 Ply – Penz 50035 10.24 Penz – Liverpool Stabled Exeter 47339 / 47217 / 47622 / 31238 47425 Leeds _ Penzance 2nd Aug 1985 50029 07.21 Ply – Penzance 47222 13.30 relief to the 13.46 HST 50002 15.05 Ply - winterbournecm
Hi guys - it is a bit of dry read. I am collating the photos from the period which I will scan and caption in the evenings as the draw in! The 07.21 Ex Plymouth was a grand train. It was almost 100% a class 50. The train consist was a BG & 2 air conditioned seconds from the rear of the 10.24 Penzance to Liverpool. It went 4.50 Penzance to Liskeard empty and formed a all stations stopper from there to Plymouth. The 07.21 back was a super charged kourney. I had many a cab ride with Plymouth Drivers from Hayle into Penzance and used to be amazed as the power was turned on and the power was often eased for the 45mph at the end of Hayle viaduct. Full power would agin be applied towards St Erth, and closed along the causeway for the St Erth stop. I believe the uphill into the station retarded the speed. Full power again out of St Erth - a marvellous racket past the Lamb & Flag 75 - 80mph was easliy reached downgrade by Rosevidney, then the bone rattling section along the marshes (hopefully with a green in the distant) and you were home! Once in Penzance the stock was propelled into Slopers siding to tie on to the remaining coaches in the Liverpool set, run round and backed in for the Liverpool. The loco was rarely swapped, so the 07.21 gives a pretty good indication of the 10.24 Liverpool loco.

Rugd1022
That's what was so great about the Duchy back in the day - 'odds and sods' style workings with Type 4 power on load two or three, numerous parcels and perishables, endless light engine moves etc... happy days, now long gone... winterbournecm
Hi Mickey. I dont mean to be funny, but a ride on todays traction just doesnt cut it at all for me. The whine of the air con coaches, the hollow roar of coach wheels on the steel tracks, the grinding brake blocks when the brakes are applied are things I miss terribly. The delicious prospect of pulling down a drop light and seeing the classic view of the rear of the loco bow - on ahead of you, the hiss of the straight air brake, the gentle taking up of the shackle and then over 2000HP being unleashed is beyond compare to the bus like qualities of a buzz-buzz and away of a second generation unit. But, as always, each to their own mate. A dear friend in Bristol panel summed it up excellently in the early noughties, for the first time in his life, trains journeys are only now taken to get from one place to another, not purely for the enjoyment. aforsyth
Hi Craig - just to say I can't wait for the next installment, and photos! 85/86 at Penzance is the period I'm most interested in. I suspect my 'story' is similar to many others'. Back then, I was a couple of years younger than you, and during a family holiday to vist my cousins in PZ (in 85/86, still not sure which), my parents decided that a 3 day Devon & Cornwall Rail Rover would keep me out of the way. Ironically, at the time, I was a GWR/steam fanatic, so was only initially interested in the stations and surviving GWR paraphernalia, but I began to develop a grudging admiration for the 50s and 37s I saw as I visited every station in Cornwall over those 3 days (and Plymouth/Gunnislake too). By the end of it, I loved the loco-hauled trains, having only ever seen HSTs at my local Chippenham station; particularly the GWR green 50s and 47s that appeared regularly at PZ! I was transformed - for my next birthday I got my first proper diesel in a Lima '50 trainset, and future layout plans (none of which were ever finished) were catapulted into the then-present. Almost 30 years later, as I return to model railways, that's the period and place I want to model, although I still like steam power enough to consider including a fictional preserved line...!. Childhood memories can be so much more powerful than history books! I do have some amateur pictures from those times, although sadly only a few pictures of the traction, since that only began to interest me towards the end of the trip. I will endeavour to upload them when I can, if that's allowable. Thanks again for the timetable info above - great stuff. Alan

aforsyth
Once again great info, Craig! Wish I'd got up to Crewe in those days! :-/ As a matter of interest, did you ever see the green 47079 (G. J. Churchward) on regular passenger or parcel services at Penzance in the mid or late eighties? I remember reading somewhere that 47/0s on passenger services would need to operate during the day, since they don't have ETH, but just wondered if there were any documented cases anyone knows about? Thanks, Alan
winterbournecm
Heres GJ Churchward passing Roskear with the Chacewater tanks way back in the late 80s. It's a poor picture because of the weather, but interesting enough I guess!
aforsyth
Yup - couldn't have asked for a more useful shot, thank you Craig! This could be the picture I blame for parting with pennies in order to pick up 47079 - I've admired the model for a long time. I don't recall reading what the Chacewater tanks carried, and approximately how often? As Mickey says, these trains are truly inspirational for a small model! the penguin of doom
I remember being at the Crewe works open day and all those 40's stood forlornly waiting their fate. 45053 was there too, wish I'd taken a picture of her. Did I read that she donated her headcode boxes to D100? I seem to recall there being being one of the earlier AC electrics which must have been 84008. Thanks for the memories. Cheers. Sean. winterbournecm
The Chacewater tanks were cement. The little facility received trains twice a week. The pick up freight used to stop and leave the other portion on the main line and serve the complex. But latterly the only wagons were cement tanks. The train ran around at Drump Lane until 1983, but St Erth from then on. Not sure when the last trip was. Late 80s I guess.

Best regards, Jeremy
winterbournecm
It used to go into St Blazey on the occasions I saw it. It would have tripped up Country in the feeder service I expect. It was generally a type 4, but I have class 37s working it on a number of occasions. It was the remnants of the "Truro" freight, and called there in the mornings. In the preceding years, it would have had Drump Lane traffic, Holmans generators and the West Cornwall freight including oil for Hayle Wharves. Rugd1022
When you say remnants of the 'Truro' job Craig do you mean the Exeter Riverside - Truro one of old... ?
winterbournecm
I've begun scanning images from the period. Here are some Crewe Works ones included the infamous 45053 - complete with box headcodes.
the penguin of doom
When was 45053 taken out of the scrap line/cut up? Cheers. Sean.
