RJdeVries
Pfew, the window frames are done, it's been a struggle getting al the small pieces to fit but the results are there to be seen. First of, a picture of a test with the interior lighting, on these pictures the newly applied lintels above the lower windows can be seen. It looks pretty neat, the inside of the box will be painted in a dark color prior to the fitting of the interior walls, the light will not shine trough the walls afterwards. I'm now waiting for the glue to set in order to commence painting. Greetings, Robbert Jan.
RJdeVries
Hello, I've painted the Signalbox last week, this is the final color that it's going to recieve. the interior is also painted in the same shades, I'm not satifyd with the result, the yellow should be mixed with a bit of white, these will be repainted. I've made an attempt in wheathering a loco last week-end, the 4F got a wheathering that represents the post war run down look. The coal wagons behind the loco have been done a few months ago. Hope you like it, I'm currently wheathering a Class 37, D6984. Greetings, Robbert Jan.

RJdeVries
Hello, Another update from the Netherlands :-) Made a desk and file-cabinet in one, the desk light is functional. A lever frame, It's not fully there, a bit of a consession because of the limited size. If this box would have al the levers for signals and points there would be 25 of them. I'ts going to be a conversation piece for those who now what to look for. And installed in to the box, the shelf that runs acros the levers is under construction. The rear wall has also seen the install of a sink, a tap is to be installed next. I've also made some loads for a couple of bogie bolsters; Steel pipes and rail, they will be secured for shipping with miniature chains. Also wheathered my Class 37, she's ready for her first exhibit next year. Thanks for reading, Robbert Jan.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted December 3, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 3, 2013 Love the interior of the signal box, it's great. Did I read correctly that the desk lamp is going to be working? Awesome! Al
RJdeVries
Hello, Correct: Not the greatest photo, the mobile phone doesn't really like the dark and the led light really messes up the photo. Anyhow, it currently is lit at about 3 volts with a 4,7 K Ohm resistor in the circuit. Greetings, Robbert Jan.
RJdeVries
It has been a while since the last posting, meanwile there has been a lot of action. I've recently recieved a second hand class 37 in mint condition, It's an older model in green with a split headcode, 32-776. Bought via Ebay.co.uk. I was informed that the loco is not fitted with any lighting from the factory, this had to change in order for it to run on my layout, an so it begins. The letters and numbers where changed because the original letters and numbers didn't work when lit from the back, the black areas between the white where a little to thin. My solution was to fabricate a couple of numbers from plasticcard and lightly glue them on the glass, then afterwards spray paint the whole thing black and sanding down the letters afterwards. The lighting arrangement is a pair of sunny white led's behind each "code" and it works a treat, I will make a few pictures in the dark for those who are interrested. And then, the original main board, it had to go because of the limitations it presented. So, I've changed it, there now is a 21pin connector for the decoder and a seperate 8pin connector for the connection to the body. A small pcb containing smd resistors is fitted against the roof and all the lights are connected up to this board. And last but not least, the speaker, A Dcc supplies 58x22x9mm Bass Reflex speaker. The next project that is awaiting completioin in the shop is the latest model of the 08 from Bachmann, It has been fitted with a new machima engine and a speaker. An update on that project will follow. Greetings, Robbert Jan.
Andrew P
Hi Robert, what a lovely layout, a really neat track plan and beautifully executed buildings with some wonderful interior detail. I was also impressed with the weathering on the 4F and the 37, really good stuff and I'm looking forward to more pics in 2014. Andy
RJdeVries
Hello Andy, Thanks for the positive comments, I'm pleased to read that it's appreciated. I've made a little progress, and made a couple of pictures of the headcode; I'm currently sealing the inside to prevent the leaking of light into the body. I've also made a few pictures of the other project, the Class 08. A new engine has been installed, the worm gear fitted snugly onto the axle of the new engine, I've pulled it of the old engine with a pinion puller. A lot of metal and plastic has been removed from the inside of the model in order to create a lot of room for the new speaker and decoder with Legomanbiffo soundpackage. This work has been done after reading an article by Jim Smith-Wright. A view from the front, the engine is held into place by 2 screws and a piece of card helps with the final ajustment. The speaker had found a home below the footplate, it's completly out of sight, as seen in the picture below. Greetings, Robbert Jan.

RJdeVries
Thanks! I've made some progress today, the Class 37 is done, thats under the hood to be precise. She's been put together again and had her first trial run today, succes! I've made some final adjustements to the volume settings of the different sounds. The photo shows her taking fuel at "Leek Junction" The remaining spare time has been dedicated to the fabrication of the point rodding system and the signal wiring, these have yet to be completed and painted. I've not made any pictured of the signal wiring, these will be made next year :-) Greetings and a Happy New Year, Robbert Jan.
RJdeVries
Hello Everyone, A new year and the deadline is of now 2 months before the first show, OntraXs 2014 in the Dutch national railway museum in Utrecht. I've made a lot of progress and fitted al the parts of the layout together in order to test run all the trains to see if the would squeeze trough the bends. First, the points where fitted with their rodding, and a cover plate; I'm sure the rodding isn't quite prototypical and should in cases be applied differently but, It's there instead of completely missing. I could also have gone for the easy way, electrical operation. The surroundings of the signalbox have been painted and grass was glued in place. Wooden boards where added to give the signalman a way to walk around. The station building has also been test fitted again, this also made fot some nice photo's And ofcourse, no model railway without trains, so I've connected up the wires and had a afternoon of running trains. Seen on the photo is a 2MT with 3 MK1 coaches. A coal train pulled by a 4F locomotive, running tender forward, there are 14 loaded coal wagons and a brake van in this consist. This is the yard located on the back of the layout, it's reached by two curves and all of my current rolling stock fits trough, except the Class 37, it's wheels grind against the inside of the body and it de-rails itself, a bit of tinkering required here. Thanks for reading. Regards, Robbert Jan.
RJdeVries
Hello, I've been tinkering about a solution to the problem in the last posting, the bogies should be altered to raise the whole loco a bit higher, I've tried plasticcard and some brass washers, sadly, no go. And then the idea, a piece of heatshrink around the post that connect's the bogie to the loco body. I'ts raised about 1 mm and now the wheels clear the body and she runs without problems. She's seen here with a test train, 3 Mk1's I've also made some alterations tot the level crossing, this has been narrowed and the white bars where added. These will be painted brown to resemble those wooden boards that make it difficult to walk accros. (It's a triangular material, approx 1 mm in size) The Derby Lightweight clears without a problem. And the last few jobs where wiring the buffer stops to the power supply. I'm currently painting the interiors of some Mk 1's prior to fitting passengers. Regards, Robbert Jan. Allegheny1600
Hi Robbert Jan, That's some lovely work you are doing there - well done, Sir! I always liked that part of the country so am pleased to see it modelled. Is it easy or not to model the UK from the Netherlands? I'm sure major items are easy but the smaller parts? Anyway, good luck and keep up the good work! John E. Edit: Just reading through again, I realise this is a fictional layout called "Leek", D'oh! I thought you meant Leek, Staffordshire! Still lovely, though!
RJdeVries
Hi there, I'ts quite a challenge to model a layout based abroad, I've only been to the UK once and visited the heritage railways south of London, I was camping in Guildford at the time. There is a lot of information to be found on the www and ofcourse the photo's that I took on my visit. Some items will not be to spec and made to suit my needs, I'm going for the overall picture, it should be rather accurate, and for those who visited the UK could relate to the atmosphere on the layout. Small items and parts are rather easy to come by, most of the materials that are specific to the UK are ordered via web based shops or Ebay. A new world has opened there, but, I'm on a budget so some things will be made in house and will therefore not be bought. The layout is called "Leek Junction", I do know that there is a town called Leek in the UK that had a GWR operated station at one time, I'ts no comparisant in any way. I'm living in the town of Leek, in the Netherlands, I't also had a station for some 20 years ago. Regards, Robbert Jan.
RJdeVries
Hello Everyone, Made some progress here, I've bought a Ratio water tower on Ebay to be placed on the platform instead of the water crane. Ratio watertoren 1 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr The platform was slightly altered because of the placement of the water tower. I've made some new tiles and a drain for catching dripping water. I've also made a couple of video's, one with a pasing train. P1030074 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr P1030075 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr The pictures above are the teasers for the next exhibit, OntraXs 2014 in the Dutch Railway Museum. I'm currently wiring the signal pulleys and all other sorts of "on the square millimeter" jobs. Regards, Robbert Jan.

RJdeVries
Thanks for the positive comments, I'ts good to read that the hard work is paying of. I'm currently working on my 08 shunter, I've recieved a Loksound V4 decoder yesterday. This decoder is loaded with the Legomanbiffo soundpackage, great stuff! The loco needs some mayor modifications in order to make it all fit, I've also added a couple of plaques of lead where possible in order to increase the weight of the loco, and the power pickup. I'm going to fabricate a set of new pickup contact's that will be added to the already existing ones in order to make sure that she;s not bogged down without power. And, since I was buzzy, I gave the centre axle a bit more clearance by filing a notch in the bottom plate that keeps the wheelset in place, now bumps and dips are staightened out whilst running. Going off for lunch now, and than off to work, the commuters do want to get home for dinner in time. I'll post some pictures of the progress tomorrow. Regards, Robbert Jan. RJdeVries
Hello, It took a bit longer then anticipated, but the pictures are here, as well is a little story about the on-going events. This is the bottom plate that holds the axles in place, I've slightly notched this plate in order to allow the axle to gain some downwards movement. And flipped over, the Pcb is already glued in place, I've stripped the area of paint and glued it to the bare metal, I'll use some black paint when completely done. Fitted underneith the loco and the first pickup contacts are aready in place, they have been slightly altered during the first test run, but they do really enhance the power pickup! The rear axle also got it's pickup contacts and this concludes this part of the refurbishment. I'm currently working on a new speaker, the one ftted earlyer has a lack of volume whilst the decoder has been set to a volume value of 190 of 192 in Cv 63. So, I've tried a sugarcube by ESU, it got a little better but I'm not satisfied yet, so I searched in the spare speakers and found a round speaker, 4 Ohms 1,5Watt. The volume has increased by about 50%, she is now able to compete with the Class 37 :-) And for the good order, some pictures of the layout! DSC_0657 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr DSC_0656 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr DSC_0655 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr The station building, signalbox and water tower are not in place due to there fragility. RJdeVries
Hello There, And she's done, at least that is what I thought....... Damn crank broke during the polishing of the wheels, I've glued it in place again, seems ok but I've already ordered replacement parts. At least the wheathering is done ; Class 08 13050 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr I've also made a couple of loads, as seen on the picture, tube's and a tarped load. With Text by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr And a stack of rail; New Rail by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr Regards, Robbert Jan.
RJdeVries
Hello Everyone, I've made the deadline and had a great first show last weekend at the Dutch railway museum in Utrecht. Everything went according to plan and there where no mentionable defects troughout the weekend. The loco's and rolling stock behaved very well, I'm glad to say that they didn't let me down at all. Here are some pictures of the layout in working order; P1030679 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr All the pieces awaiting assembly. P1030685 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr And this is about 1 hour later, assembled and ready for the first test run of the day. P1030688 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr But first, the official OntraXs plaque has to be applied! P1030177 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr And testing commences, just one wire came loose during transport, this was fixed in a minute. P1030179 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr P1030180 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr P1030181 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr P1030182 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr P1030183 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr P1030689 by Lauwersmeer, on Flickr It has been a great event and everything has been taken care of by the organisation, thumbs up to them! The next show will be "Terug naar Toen 2014" at the VSM museum railway in Beekbergen, the second weekend in september. Regards, Robbert Jan.
Allegheny1600
Hello Robbert Jan, How absolutely wonderful to see a British layout executed so well from the Netherlands! It looks really good and I doubt I could build a Dutch layout and make it look equally Dutch - if you see what I mean!?! I'm glad you enjoyed the show, I wouldn't be too surprised to see you invited to the UK one day. Your 08 looks really nice too, did you get replacement cranks for it? If not, I have spares you can have (free!) if you like. Cheers, John E.
RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted March 11, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 11, 2014 Excellent! Do the Dutch visitors to shows have much understanding of British railways - do they appreciate how good this layout is? That head-on picture of 80021 is particularly convincing (if you ignore the shirt in the background! ). How did you make the 'cant' (camber) on the curve? RJdeVries
Hello John. It has been dificult some times, mainly the difference in scale, meaning that I'm used to model in 1:87 instead of 1:76. The difference may be small but it does take a little more calculating and therefore some trial and error. I would really like to attend to a exhibition in the Uk one day, but this is up to those who organise these events. I'ts a logistical process and I will need to take a few day's of and this is not that easy since my work scedule is coupled to the time table of the railways, switching in december and lasting for a year. This means that I'm always planning a year ahead.... About the 08, I do really appreciate the offer, and if it wasn't for the great service at Bachmann I would have taken it. At the test run before the show she ran a few feet and sadly the crank went all wrong again. I did obtain a new wheelset the week before the show and it came in handy, I replaced it in minutes and it gave me 3 trouble free days of running. Hello Rich, The visitors generally appreciate the layout, but there are just a few people that really have a understanding of the British Railways. Most of the visitors just see a great looking and attractive landscape and the just like the overall scene that plays a host to a variety of different trains and locomotives. I did have some interresting discussions about the name of the station, 3rd rail etc etc. The shot of the 82001 was taken trough the road bridge, the camber of the track was made using wooden ice cream sticks. they are about 2 mm thick and I've placed them underneith the sleepers prior to ballasting. I do restrain the rail with a screw and washer every 7 or 8 inches, this makes it less likely to shift. Going in and out of camber is a different story, there are a few pieces of card and paper underneith the sleepers to reduce the camber very slightly before returning to completely level. Regards, Robbert Jan.
RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted March 12, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 12, 2014 Thanks Robbert Jan, the camber certainly adds to the realism & seems well worth the effort.
