RichardEyre
It'll only turn so far, the wire would get twisted. I thought it was asking for trouble turning it anyway?
Satan's Goldfish
The head only has about 180 degrees of movement anyway, I've seen before where it'll only turn a couple of degrees before sticking in both directions but a strip down, tidy up and rebuild has usually sorted that. I'm not familiar with the head only wanting to turn in one direction from any point though. General WL rule of thumb is not to worry about slewing the head unless you're feeling especially brave/crazy and the crane is being well behaved to start with. Somedays the Heljan cranes are less tolerant to continual exhibition use than others and no two behave and respond in exactly the same way. enginelane
Read through the trouble shooting guide but still does really explain why the light and magnet did not have any power.
RichardEyre
It's OK. They have power now. Think I've reached the end of what I can do now. The rest is mechanical.

enginelane
Defeated by lack of sleep again so early morning project is completing the detailing of the large scrap moving crane. The crane lives at the back of the layout so the scratch built boom and grab are not too noticeable . Needs piping, electrical boxes and more subtle weathering
enginelane
Piping added and final layers of weathering added. Sits in between stacks of baled scrap next to loading siding.
enginelane
This small Volvo crane has an electro magnet attachment and is positioned next to the shearing unit taking scrap before it moves to the baling unit. Scratch built boom and front stabliser as original crane came with a small plough attachment on the front

enginelane
The vehicles are part of the Oxford range and they have produced various tractor units over time. Vehicles have had a. Light wash applied using MIG earth wash and AK winter streaking grime. Although the layout is supposed to be in late summer this wash seems to portray road grime quite well. Trailers have had a little rust added using Lifecolour Dust and Rust set. Forgot to add they are for OO scale

enginelane
Crane back from repair from Richard and amazed at what he managed to sort out and how much Heljan had packed into the design and build. Magnet problem solved and hoist problem tracked down to a misaligned spindle shaft on which the gear that transfers power from a motor links to the hoist gears. Will need a bit of thought as to repair as clearances are very tight around the mechanism so thinking caps time!
