LNERGE
Diesels 70's and 80's810.jpg I love this photo, but I had this knack of using up my shots on the film, then finding one decent shot, and spoiling it by ripping the negatives trying to force the camera to take it! Here is a shot of Kings Lynn depot, with a couple of 03's, and interesting van and a TTA/B fuel tank present. Super photo! JeffP
Two works visits tonight, one long gone, one more recently, but still gone. Plus three of Toton on the end. Nameplate of class 50, 50024, "Vanguard", Doncaster works, An open day. Sorry about this one: yours truly, aged about 25, with my favourite deltic. From the cab of 55020, "Nimbus", Doncaster works. Class 50,50021, Doncaster works. Unidentified class 52, Swindon, Reading . Same class, different train. Inside the works, a pair of class 35 "Hymeks" are being scrapped. I remember it being billed as "scrap your own loco". Outside was class 35 "Hymek" 7093. Swindon, class 47, 47088 "Samson" poses in fronf of part of the works which is already being demolished. Behind it is another class 47 in green livery. Swindon, looking down towards the works. The sole surviving class 42 (on that day) 818, "Glory" can be seen in the distance. All the others present on that were being scrapped. Sadly, no-one preserved "Glory" either........ Three views of Toton from the embankment opposite. The class 44's can be seen in the foreground. The "Peak closest to the depot in the background is 45060, "Sherwood Forester", and those on the front row outside the depot, closest to the cam are, 44006, 44008, 44010, and in the second pic 44002, 44004 and 44006 again. Bottom pic: 44001 arriving on shed. Edited February 20, 2014 by JeffP

JeffP
South Wales, tonight, with some oddities. Early morning at Landore depot. There was just one class 52 on the shed. February 1975. Class 47/0, 47001, Landore, February 1975. Two shots of the Brush prototype, class 53, 1200, "Falcon", at Newport Ebbw Junction, February 1975. Poor photos, it was getting dark by the time we arrived...we actually went round Severn Tunnel Junction in the pitch dark! The days of the Dalescroft Railfans Society. Nameplate of above loco. Cardiff Canton depot. Two shots of Radyr's PWM, PWM651. The second one is another of my end of film shots...... Barry, and doomed class 41, D601 "Active" waits in vain for preservation. Barry again, and D6121 is marked "SOLD", but I don't think it made preservation, did it? The loco on it's right, LMS Class 5XP "Jubilee" 45699 "Galatea" did though.
JeffP
Been absent for a while, due to illness, sorry, but normal service is resumed tonight, with views from Birkenhead to Birmingham, and London. Birkenhead depot, with class 47, 47228 and class 40's, 40090 and 40117, circa 1977. Looking across the front of the depot at Birkenhead. Inside the depot at Birkenhead finds a pair of class 24's, one with accident damage. First one is on the up Stour, just leaving New Street south tunnel Second one looks like the up Camp Hill line approaching St. Andrews Junction, with the line from Saltley coming in from the left. Thanks to Dave47549 Three shots behind Western diesels, the first tow are on it's way from Birmingham New Street to London Paddington. I THINK it's 1013, Western Ranger. The final one is passing Subway Junction going towards Birmingham, behind 1070, "Western Gauntlet". Western diesel 1013, "Western ranger" on arrival at Paddington, circa June 1975. Two shots of the preserved Warship D821 "Greyhound" at Reading. Western diesel 1070, "Western Gauntlet" awaits departure from Paddington, June 1975. I was at college in Nottingham, and took myself to New Street for the day, where I spent my time being hurried backwards and forwards between there and Paddington, behind Western diesels. I managed haulage behind 1005, 1010, 1013, 1040 and 1070 during the day. Edited March 5, 2014 by JeffP
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted March 3, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 3, 2014 The picture taken from behind the 1000 with the 50 coming in the opposite direction was taken from a Down train, i.e. going away from Paddington, passing Subway Jcn. JeffP
More varied locations tonight. We begin with class 31/3, 31326, but I'm unsure where it's taken. This one is instantly recognisable, Nottingham with class 45/1, 45102, standing on the centre roads almost beneath the bridge that used to carry the old Great Central line over the station. Circa 1974. I think this is Nottingham too, with class 25/0, 25087 awaiting a clear road. Halifax, an interesting transport view, with class 03 03089 and a decent view of it's runner wagon, plus a couple of preserved buses, circa 1974. This one is at Worcester, showing what enthusiasts referred to as the "dead roads" which paralleled the depot entrance off Tolladine Road. The "passenger shed" can be seen to the left, the older "freight shed" is off view to the right. I liked Worcester, it had an undefinable atmosphere. In the foreground is class 08, 08778, and in the background, left to right, class 47. 47146, class 52 "Western" diesel 1055, "Western Advocate" damaged in the fatal collision at Tunnel Jcn earlier that year, and class 50, 50025, then unnamed. 22/2/76. A murky day at Springs Branch, Wigan, with, left to right, class 50, 50023, class 47, 47069 and class 40, 40034 in the murk. 15/2/76 Speke junction, class 81, 81019 stands beside class 08 shunters, 08688, 886, 918, 923, 679, 916 and 818. 15/2/76 Also at Speke, class 85, 85023 is in front of class 81, 81004. 15/2/76 Another shot of the depot at Birkenhead.. Note the size of the old steam shed, the the right, 12 roads, next to the newer diesel depot, 2 roads. 15/2/76. Fat Controller
That runner with the 03 is an odd one; it's not the normal Conflat L or Lowfit. Is it a Demountable Tank chassis? Very useful to have a high-level shot like this for modelling purposes- thanks.
NXEA!
This may be stupid, but why/when did Westerns work off New Street to London? I didn't think they had any booked work, unless these were diversions or extra services vice the WCML on this particular occasion?

They continued on these duties until the mid-1970s. I think there was one service every two hours or so. JeffP
That's correct, I managed three return journeys in my day out, getting haulage from five different Westerns. It was circa 1975, June. I had treated myself to a West Midlands Rover, and on seeing a Western at New Street, made enquiries and spent one of my days doing the return journeys. I have memories of it being a warm day, and on my last return, hammering through Dorridge with the platforms crammed with commuters, school-children going home, all staring at the Western as it howled through. Stirring stuff. Sadly, as a student I only had a borrowed camera, but used a friends steam age shed directory to visit Worcester and Gloucester, as well as Bescot, Saltley, and Tyseley.
RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted March 5, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 5, 2014 Cracking photos Jeff - particularly Worcester As for that class 21 at Barry - 6121 or 6122? Much debate! Popular Post JeffP
On the western region tonight. We start at Severn Tunnel Junction, with classes 08, 25, 47 and 37 on show, the nearest loco to the camera being 47108. 22/2/76 Margam, with class 37/3, 37303 nearest the camera. also in shot are 37178 and 08645. 22/2/76. An overall view of Landore depot, looking towards the repair shed. 22/2/76. The Welsh railway worker is just looking disgusted as my mate's older brother told him we had been to "Lanerly" just before. I think he meant Llanelli. Landore again, with, from left to right, class 47/4, 47484 "Isambard Kingdom Brunel", class 52's 1072 "Western Glory" and 1010 "Western Campaigner". 22/2/76. Nameplate of class 52 1037, "Western Empress". Class 52, 1037 "Western Empress", in excellent exterior condition, waits to leave Plymouth, 23/5/74 Cabside of class 52 "Western" diesel, 1005, "Western Venturer", awaiting the right away from Exeter St. Davids, 23/5/74. Class 52, "Western" diesel, 1005, "Western Venturer" at speed near Starcross. 23/5/74 Western Diesel, 1005 "Western Venturer" on arrival at Plymouth. 23/5/74. The loco appears to have lost it's headboard clips. Interesting to note as it will be the subject of a model. My college took us on a field trip to Cornwall at the end of the summer term 1974, my digs were at Scorrier overlooking the mainline to Penzance. That and the food are what I remember best...... I managed to blag a day out spotting and took a trip from Redruth to Plymouth, and Plymouth to Exeter St Davids and back to get some Western haulage. 1005 and 1037 were my two Westerns, the other haulage was a class 46, 46011, seen earlier in this series. NXEA! They continued on these duties until the mid-1970s. I think there was one service every two hours or so. I didn't even originally think Westerns were even cleared to Brum New Street, let alone had booked work there! Absolutely fascinating, thanks for that! RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted March 6, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 6, 2014 Wizzos also had a booked turn north of Bristol in to BNS in the late 60s/early 70s on 1M22 Plymouth - Manchester Cheers Phil
RMweb Premium brushman47544 Posted March 6, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 6, 2014 On the western region tonight. Diesels 70's and 80's868.jpg Western Diesel, 1005 "Western Venturer" on arrival at Plymouth. 23/5/74. The loco appears to have lost it's headboard clips. Interesting to note as it will be the subject of a model. Venturer lost its headboard clips at one end following repairs to collision damage. Dapol didn't exactly shine in selecting the first locos for release - the maroon SYP version was D1029 and that never had the clips. Superb model though.
