JeffP
A bit nearer home tonight. The driver of class 47. 47460 is looking for the right away at Barnetby, with a train from Kings Cross to Cleethorpes. Circa 1977 Frodingham depot, with a pair of class 45's, 45006 is inside the shed. Circa 1977. Doncaster depot, and the low evening sun almost silhouettes class 24/0, 24099, circa 1977. Doncaster works, what used to be the stripping shed, and is now the stripping area, having been deprived of roof and most of the walls. Class 24, 24071 keeps company with the last of the Baby Deltics, class 23, D5901. Both went for scrap. Circa 1977 Doncaster depot, the evening sunshine highlights the usual class 31's, 08's and a class 47. The stripping shop at Doncaster works, and class 37/3, 37300 is awaiting a decision...it had been on the works for around 6 months when this shot was taken. It did actually get repaired and went back into service. Circa 1977. Compare the support pillars with those shown in the fourth shot. In this one, the stripping shop has walls and a roof. Worcester, and class 37 37225 passes through with a parcels train. Circa 1977. JeffP
A few from South Yorkshire and North Notts tonight..... with one haulage shot. Wath depot, and an unidentified class 76,rests between duties. It looks to have been through the works recently. Circa 1979. Class 13 "master and slave" unit, 13003 is at Tinsley depot, in the company of class 20, 20021, and a class 45. September 1979. Westhouses...and the sun actually appears to be shining! An unidentified class 20 is parked at the rear of the old steam shed. September 1979. Westhouses again, long shot of the depot. The locos on that day appear to have been mainly class 20's, with 20134 identifiable, and one class 08. Wath depot again, and a broadside view of class 76, 76028. September 1979. A class 45 gets two yellows to proceed from a signal halt near Saltley, Birmingham, while on a NE-SW service.

JeffP
Looks like it...your picture is better than mine as the 45 to the left has moved. And at that time I still had a Zenit. My better pics were taken with a Pentax ME Super, and a Pentax A1.
JeffP
Some varied ones tonight, and some not-very-good photographs. Sadly, they are scanned from prints, and at this time, my prints were done by the cheap method of sending the fil away in a postage paid envelope, and receiving the prints and another free film, plus another envelope, about seven days later. Unfortunately, this mass printing led to the very ends of locos being missed off the prints, despite them being perfectly centred on the negatives...the use of an SLR camera ensured it. I eventually stopped using this service for that very reason. The first two tonight are very much "the one that got away". Swindon virtually begged someone to preserve this loco, but there was no interest, and she was eventually cut up. Class 42, 818 "Glory" was the only Warship in one piece at Swindon works open day, circa 1974. Class 87, 87004, appears as if she has been prepared for Royal Train duties, Willesden, circa 1979/80 Now I'm unsure where this one is..it might be Immingham? Anyway, class 31's, with 31311, and 31263 identifiable. Circa 1980. Paddington, and class 47, 47628, (or 47078), "Sir Daniel Gooch". in GWR livery, ...I cannot remember what number it was carrying. Circa 1986. I'm reliably informed it must have been 47628 since it has jumper cables. Class 86 at the bufferstops at Euston, 6414, "Frank Hornby" has brought in an express from the north. JeffP
Crewe again tonight. Class 86, 86252, "The Liverpool Daily Post" is leaving Crewe for the south. Unidentified class 86 runs into Crewe from the south on a wet day, circa 1987. Class 85, 85017 enters Crewe from the south, circa 1987. Front end comparison at Crewe, Class 304, 304011 looks dated beside class 150, 150103, circa 1987. The driver of this 86 has done a running repair to stop the rain entering the cab. Class 25. 25101 runs into Crewe from the south with a train of swb vans. Circa 1980. Strange beast at Crewe, track recording unit DR90007 runs through the fast lines. The size of the above track recording unit is made apparent in this shot of it running past class 86, 86420 on an express for London. Class 150, 150143 leaves Crewe on a wet day in 1987. Closer shot of class 86, 86420. Dates corrected, thanks, Pugsley. Edited March 30, 2014 by JeffP
jonny777
Hi Jeff. Your Doncaster photos are a little earlier than you suggest, given the cutting up dates that I have. 24099 was cut up in Aug 1977. 24071 was cut up in Jan 1977 and D5901 in Feb 1977. The vegetation looks very green, which rules out the summer of 1976, so I wonder if they were taken in the Autumn of that year?
Fat Controller
25101 is probably working to or from ROF Radway Green, between Crewe and Alsager. At one time, there was a direct connection from the Kidsgrove line to Basford Hall yard, but this went out of use sometime in the late 1970s, I believe. Any train requiring to run between Basford Hall yard and the Kidsgrove line subsequently had to run round somewhere in the station area.
Pugsley
Class 150, 150143 leaves Crewe on a wet day in 1980. That unit wasn't built until 1985 or 1986, so I think those pictures were wither 1986, or 87.
JeffP
Thanks for all replies. SOME of my pics I am certain of the dates and the details, many I'm not, so any help is gratefully received. eastwestdivide
Crewe again tonight. ... Strange beast at Crewe, track recording unit DR90007 runs through the fast lines. ...The size of the above track recording unit is made apparent in this shot of it running past class 86, 86420 on an express for London. aka a Neptune track recording unit. I caught it at Leicester, photo here in this thread, probably the same one, but mine's numbered DR 50007. Perhaps there was a renumbering at some point, possibly to avoid clashes with similarly-numbered locos. Now that would be a good choice for a Paddington express. JeffP
Local again tonight. The setting sun highlights class 47/3, 47318 "Norsk Hydro" at Frodingham depot, circa 1986. Whilst at the front of the shed, class 20's, 20093 and 20044 are stabled. Circa 1986. I like the evening sunshine.......here it shows off the difference in the two liveries of a pair of class 37, Frodingham, circa 1986. Line up of class 37's at Frodingham, with 37202 nearest the camera, circa 1986. Class 08, 08885 makes it's way through Doncaster with a parcels coach, circa 1986. The cab of 08885, showing a BG (Hull, Botanic gardens) shedplate. Class 305 unit stabled overnight at Doncaster, I believe it was used for crew training. Quiet time at Doncaster......around 3am, looking north.
JeffP
The North West tonight. All May 1988. At what I think is Shap summit, class 85, 85007, is on an express passenger. Close by, an unidentified class 86. A class 86 85 dragging 87025. Class 87 approaching the summit. Nearly new class 90. Near Appleby, class 47, is on a Leeds-Carlisle service. And here arriving at Appleby station. Finally, tonight, class 47 47457 "Ben Line" has just come off it's train at Carlisle Citadel. JeffP
Some varied locations tonight. Double headed class 86 with a train of steel coiled plate pulls into Carlisle from the north. May 1988. Shunter, class 08, 08508, stabled at Carlisle Citadel, probably Lincoln, May 1988. Class 47, 47222, "Appleby Frodingham" at Frodingham depot. circa 1988. White roofed class 47 stabled in platform 2 at Doncaster, circa 1988. Class 56, 56098, with silver roof, is smoking a little parked at Frodingham depot, circa 1988. Departmental unit at Lime Street, circa 1987. Locos stabled at York, with 47353 identifiable. Departmental class 97/4, 97408 passes York with a ballast working, circa 1987. Nice Shark ballast plough behind the loco. Class 97/4 on a ballast working, York, circa 1987. Edited April 2, 2014 by JeffP
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted April 1, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 1, 2014 08508 is not Carlisle Jeff - there's a semaphore in the background and they all went in the area in the early 1970s (and there's no overheads!)
60091
Discovered your collection of 70s-80s photos tonight. Fantastic photograghs with a lot of memories for me. Thanks for taking the time to post them. I lived in Hull from 1979-86 and spent many hours at Doncaster and York though sadly rarely got south of the river. The shots of BG brought back memories-I haven't been back for years and can't believe it's all gone. One day I was lucky enough to catch them using the small turntable just inside the gate. They spent ages trying to get an 08 and a tank of waste oil balanced over the pivot before it could turn. Some of the best days train spotting and photographing at that time were done with Yorkshire Rovers which covered a very large area and were great value for money. I'm only up to page 6 but unfortunately, -got to get to bed early tonight... however I'll be back tomorrow for more. Thanks again.

HitchinLoco
When you think of all the opposition we photo people experience over the years and perhaps even more now, In all fields of interest in transport. It makes it worth the effort when in a few years time we can look back on many things that have long since gone or changed. So thank you for the pics I enjoy looking at them. JeffP
More varied locations tonight again. Class 37, 37202, passing York with a train of steel ingots, circa 1988. Class 37 with a mixed freight running south through Doncaster. Whilst running north is class 56, 56047 with empty mgr hoppers. Both sides view of class 37, 37381 at Frodingham, circa 1988 Class 91 departing Doncaster blunt end first, circa 1988. Buxton, and 37686 and 47118 are identifiable amongst stabled locos. High speed train passing through Doncaster towards the south, with power car 43083 leading. Frodingham, and class 56's, 56090 and 56084 are stabled at the west side of the shed. Pacer unit leaving York for the south. Strange to think these horrid things are still with us, and that in the north of the UK, they will be used instead of newer units.........
