The prototype research is always ongoing.

I recently discovered in Jeremy Suter’s collection a shot by John Ward taken in Broad green heading south about to pass under the LNWR Liverpool Manchester line. The notes on the back say 92113

5/5/62.

7:57

5 Grain vans from Walton.

Jeremy has given position for this shot to be shown here.

John was an enthusiast in the area who made detailed notes of workings on the line and took many photographs of the line. His shots and notes have been immensely helpful. Judging by the negative numbers on the back he would take whole rolls of film in the same position. In fact he has another shot of the same loco in the same location on the same day heading in the opposite direction with coal hoppers for Clarence dock.

I was glad to see the grain wagons, I have several I was going to run on the layout even though I wasn't sure they ever went through the area. I just liked them. Its good to now have this shot and I can recreate it although its given light to more questions as there to where exactly the wagons were going to and from. I cant think of any dedicated loading facilities at the docks at the time, they may have been loaded direct from a ship.

The model locos and wagons are due for renumbering and detailing and weathering soon.

A train I have been working on recently is a train of Ford Anglia and Corsairs from Halewood to the docks. A working my dad vividly recalls all on individual wagons.

These are Parkside and Red Panda kits with Markits wheels and Smiths screw couplings. Some are Bachmann bodies with Parkside chassis. The cars are Minix which will be painted and detailed. Ive always liked the shape of these over the die cast models available.

Chris and I set the fiddle yard up tonight as I wanted to see how many would fit in, the inner fiddle yard sidings are not as long as the outer ones. I thought I had done enough but I have space for another 8 which I will do soon.

Our clubrooms are closed for now but we have been given permission to go which is why we were able to set the fiddle yard up.

Yes Wigan this year. We did have expo EM in September but the date got changed and clashed with our show in Liverpool so we had to cancel.

During this period Chris has taken a lot of stuff home, buildings and allotments to work on, Im concentrating on locos and stock.

Im constantly on the lookout for interesting wagons to run on the layout if I can find evidence of them used on the Huskisson branch or locally.

I wouldn't have gotten the birds eye container for this photo of one in Huskisson yard. The glass EA wagon is one for the future.

Typical scene in Huskisson yard. The Interfrigo wagons are interesting.

Prestwin and presflow. (Clarence dock power station maybe?)

14t oil tanks, again maybe Clarence dock.

Parcels vans.

Cattle wagons.

Some very nostalgic photos, Michael. How many times did I go past Huskisson on the train into Exchange. There always seemed to be a lot of vans there. I remember the car trains going down to Langton Dock. The bodies were often waxed for protection and so were quite an odd colour. As to how you would model that, I don't know. I do recall some trains loaded with just chassis going past, as well, maybe for vans rather than cars. Great work with the container shackles, they really make a difference.

My dad remembers the ford anglias on lowfit wagons on the Langton branch vividly. We’re gonna say this one is a diverted train.

What he remembers is a loaded train on the Langton branch strangely heading away from the docks.

What we found out was that this train was constantly a target for kids throwing stones at the cars in the Bootle area. To the extent it would sometimes wait in the Walton area for hours in the hope the kids had gone home.

We think the train my dad saw was damaged cars returning to Fords.

Apparently this was such a problem that they went over to moving them by road the Langton branch was closed in 1968.

Forced to do jobs I've been putting off for a while, such as chains and shackles on containers. For the York meat train..

The AFs look really good Michael. Have you managed to find many pictures of the meat train?  I've only seen a 1930s shot with a B7 and the odd view of an FM container being loaded on the docks.

Thanks Michael,

Much appreciated. I'm looking to model this train as it ran in ca.1950, but as there seem to be so few photographs all are really useful!  Great to see your layout really coming together now.

Regards,

Simon

Ive modelled that loco as I have a few other shots and records of it at Walton. It worked a Hull Grand national special in 1962. Ive got another B1 which will be Wildebeeste, a loco my uncle recalls seeing there several times.

Items like this can be useful. Im gonna presume pipes in pipe wagons.

I don't think  that this has been linked to on this thread, but it may be of interest.

Be prepared to lose the will to live when looking at your local shed sightings, as you realise just how long it will take and how much it will cost to assemble this lot!

Will you have O4/8 63612 pulling it one day? I assume you have Jim Peden's photos of that loco with a rake of tube/pipes at Halewood sdgs?

Yes Ive seen that one. Would be a nice one to model.

For a while V2 locos worked the York trains. Ive searched a long time to find a photo of a V2 at Walton. Ive recently been shown this one taken by John Ward from the Jeremy Suter collection and shared with permission of 60887 on Sunday 26/11/61.

John was a keen enthusiast in the area and made details notes of the workings he saw and photographs from his house alongside the line in Childwall. Ive only seen snippets of these notes but now they are being shared with me and Im just in the process looking through 1957 at the moment.

Notes of midland 3fs which although i have been told by people they saw at Walton I had not seen any numbers recorded.

43200 and 43843 on shed on 9/11/57. So Ive just ordered a Bachmann 43843.

Layout period is roughly 1957-63. The year the shed track layout was altered and 63 the year the shed closed.

Im looking forward to the Bachmann V2 being released.
